To download an mp3 file of the accompaniment, go to www.steveparkhornmusic.net. A good junior high horn student can play this movement. It is a great piece for learning style and phrasing. The background is a cathedral in Europe. Subscribe! I will be adding more solos on a regular basis. I teach horn at a University and my goal is to create a video library of some of the best horn solos for my students and others. Also let me know if there is something you would like me to record.

From the 3rd space C on down you usually trill on the F side of the horn. Above C you can trill on the Bb side using standard fingerings. The harmonics are a whole step apart on the Bb side above C.

@AshlynFhorn14 Isolate the hard spots and play them slowly over and over using a metronome. As they get better, gradually speed them up and then put them back into the piece.

how would you recommend learning to lip trill?
@ohsteacher

It's hard to do a piece like the Gliere because of timing issues with a pre-recorded accompaniment. Plus - I would have to practice that one!!!

@mirkoculo I don't really have much choice. It would cost several thousand dollars to hire a live orchestra and I don't have the money. Besides, now that I have made the accompaniment, I can send it to you so you can play along with it!!! ;-)

Hello, can you please do a recording of Sonata for Horn and Piano by Bernhard Heiden? I played this solo last year for my senior year in band, but unfortunately I couldn't find a recording of the song anywhere. This would really help any other horn players that might decide to play that song and need a good demonstration to listen to. Thank you!

I left it out. I didn't want people to have to listen thru the whole intro before getting to the horn solo.

Great. Where was the opening warm up though? That seems to be the trickiest part.

Thanks. I'll try both and see which one I like better. I also think it's interesting that you're using a kruspe wrap... a Conn 8D, right? I keep hearing that more professional players have switched to geyer, but I still prefer a kruspe.

That sounded great. Could you recommend any horn players, other than yourself, for me to listen to while developing my sound? Preferably modern American, such as Philip Myers or Dale Clevenger. I'm also curious to know how you did those trills. I've been taught to do them open, but it looks like you're using thumb/1/2.

Steve!!! I am an 8th grader, and I have until Mid July to play this perfectly. I have never done lip trills, or even heard of ten until this piece.. How do you do them and make them easier? I hear that they're pretty hard...

Hi, I'm a 9th grader and play the french horn. I absolutely love it! One question though...How do you lip trill? That is one thing I have been trying to figure out. Haven't asked my private instructor about it, but wanna learn quick so I can start playing more Mozart. Great playing!

Mr. Park, I like how you played the cadenza, because most people who try do do their own stuff to it make it sound like shit. I think that your version is the best I've heard.

Cool, I'm working on this solo right now, and I've been messing around with the cadenza a bit, and do you have any suggestions for how to make lip trills come out clearer?

caleb McKnelly the best way in my opinion is to start at a decent tempo, for example, 90 and you play a slurred measure of quarter notes followed by a slurred measure of eight notes and then a slurred measure of sixteenth notes. So you would play those together and this helps adjust the muscles of your lips and creates muscle memory. I would get comfortable with that starting tempo and then gradually crank it up and if you work on it for 15 minutes everyday you should get it where it needs to be in no time. Hope that helps.

I have to learn this for an all county audition, my question to you sir, how can I play the higher notes without clenching my lips and shoving the horn to my face? I know, you might say air speed, but that for me just some reason makes it louder, not the clear, beutiful sond I would like.

+Blake Draughn I know it's been a while an I'm not Steve Park either, but I've been struggling with this too and one tip my teacher gave me is to pull my chin down to make a slightly bigger gap between my lips. This is a technique I use for all notes now, not just high notes, because it makes my sound a lot more clear and round. Do mind that this will make your notes slightly lower. This was no issue for my as my tuning slide was always out all the way before I did this.

You should learn to transcribe the solo. Just get out your horn and some music paper. Figure out what I do and write it down.
