Pianist Martin James Bartlett and the London Mozart Players perform Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 24 in C Minor, K491 at St John’s Smith Square, London on 14th June 2018.
The orchestration for this concerto is unusually full. It comprises, apart from the usual string and wind complement for such concertos, clarinets, trumpets and timpani. The overall mood is, as in most of Mozart’s compositions, established in the first few bars. The sombre key of C minor determines the character of the Allegro and seems never far away in the many, more gentle interludes in major keys. Even the Larghetto with its serene melody in E flat major has an important episode in C minor, and the variations of the finale in the same dark key seem to contradict the indication Allegretto (which does not appear in the original score). This last movement is thus traditionally in the tonality of the first movement, but it differs from Mozart’s only other concerto in the minor (K466 which finished in the major) in that it also ends in the minor.
Founded in 1949 by Harry Blech to delight audiences with the works of Mozart and Haydn, the London Mozart Players is the UK’s longest established chamber orchestra. Known for its unmistakable British roots, the orchestra has developed an outstanding reputation for adventurous, ambitious programming from Baroque through to genre-crossing contemporary music.

Wonderful performance, and so well recorded and filmed. Since becoming a convert to classical music about three-and-a-half years ago, I'm struck by how - in the case of performances like this - it's a visual as well as an audial experience. The interactions between soloist and orchestra, the expressions of concentration on their faces, the harmony in their movements: all combine to create a spectacle as mesmerising as a film! I wonder if a pianist's brain has ever been scientifically analysed during a performance. Given the dexterity of each hand as it plays its individual part, is one part of the brain responsible for both, or are there two parts working in conjunction with each other?

First movement is like waking up soldiers, second like putting little children to sleep. The third is like leading an army in a battlefield.

I think Mozarts' finest piano concerto, which is saying something; it's intimate and at the same time symphonic in its size and scope and only Mozart could have composed the slow central movement which begins like a childrens' nursery rime.

Admirable Mozart !

At 14:15 you omitted some notes, comparing to the longer version I have on a disc from the 90s.

Mooie, rustige, ingetogen uitvoering. Er is geen dirigent; de orkestleden spelen op een natuurlijke wijze samen.

I agree. I couldn't watch, too theatrical for my liking, although a superb pianist. Give me Vladimir Horowitz to watch any day.
