Alfred Cortot once said : "You know how to play Mozart? Did you ever hold a little bird in your hands? That's how we play Mozart."
@gonzbry72723 жыл бұрын
What does that mean
@soyeux273 жыл бұрын
@@gonzbry7272 It means that to play Mozart, you need to go gently, softly, caring for the bird almost more than you would care for yourself. To play Mozart you need to feel you have someone else's life in your hands (literally). To play Mozart you need to have an utmost understanding of how fragile is our humanity. To play Mozart you must acknowledge that tragic condition and surround it with the deepest joy it inspires you.

For me the beauty of Mozart shines through best in his slower, more lyrical movements, such as this one.

Fun fact: this isn't meant to be a slow piece. Playing it this slowly is just outright ignoring the sheet music and interjecting an interpretation that wasn't what Mozart intended. That's fine, but it also does a huge disservice to the composer. Slow middle movements in Sonatas wasn't as common as people believe and play them in modern times.
@aquamarine999112 күн бұрын
@@noonehere0987 Even funner fact, this is the Andante movement of K. 545. "Andante" means to play at a slow or moderately slow tempo. So ... what are you talking about?

I cannot add much to what John e. martin III had written--I agree with every word, but I do want to say one thing: The 2nd movement in many of Mozart's piano sonatas are slow, melancholic, and utterly beautiful. This cannot be a coincidence, don't you agree? Mitsuko Uchida captured Mozart's Inner Soul here, I feel. Thanks!!!

Mozart has been my best friend since I was in my teens. I often listen to this movement when I want to hear the lovely voice of Mozart. Very few pianists can make me feel I’m hearing his voice, though technically this movement is so easy that even little children can play it. Mitsuko is one of the very few, like Gieseking, she makes me feel certain that Mozart is still the same, being my best friend.

Mozart never dreamed this music could have so much depth. Uchida makes this music better than it is by sheer artistry .Her recordings decades ago of these sonatas show she has grown in maturity .I am dazzled that she made such simple almost children's music an utterance utterly communicative something about life and remembrance. Each note has life and is saying something the truly amazing thing is she can command all this tonal resource and in the moment subtlety in concert.Many mediocre artists make superlative recordings but here she is in encore playing with superhuman touch and sensitivity .Arrau ,Brendel ,Haskil .I've never heard Mozart played like this .

John e martin III is completely correct. This performance is amazing. I'd been playing the piece myself for sometime and I hadn't realised how beautiful it could be! Furthermore the CD recording by Schiff that I had been listening to is nothing compared to Uchida's performance.
@noonehere09876 жыл бұрын
She's a great performer, but I still find this song to inherently be better played closer to its indicated tempo than played as slowly as this. It loses the childlike joy of the piece for something more sorrowful.
@aquamarine99911Ай бұрын
@@noonehere0987 Eh, viva la difference. Too me, the third movement of K. 545 is more about childlike joy, whereas the first movement is pure flash. So it makes sense that the second movement be more pensive. In any case,there are enough years in life to hear it both ways - many, many times. Each tempo brings out a different emotion. This version is more like Moonlight Sonata, which makes it, uh, very good.

kanghuali - this raises the age old debate: should soloists interpret the piece the way they think it should be played or interpret it as they think the composer intended it to be played. I believe the former because composers leave much to the musician to decide.
@noonehere09876 жыл бұрын
Playing it according to tempo alters the emotion quite a bit. It's a much more playful, fun song. This type of interpretation is nice, but it still seems lacking compared to playing it as indicated.

This isn't really authentic to the period, given the indicated tempo markings. It sounds better at tempo on a period piano, though, so perhaps that's why modern interpretations slow it down so much.

I think most people play Mozart wrong, Mozart was a genius and he knew that, he had a high esteem, he mocked people, the secret is in his left hand it speaks with the right hand, and the left hand always makes the final statement. Most Mozart's pieces aren't to be played gently as you think. you have to think like Mozart did. Anyway love Ms. Ushida's rendition. Did you listen to the end of this 2nd movement?? There ya go...
