One thing I love about this quartet is that little motive that so innocently ends the exposition (5:06 - 5:08), and then begins to take over the whole movement like some manic obsession. Just when you think it's gone for good, there it is again at 8:38, and returns finally to have the last word.

Something similar happens in the last movement of Mozart's under-appreciated K. 174 string quintet, when, in the last movment the 16th notes rise up and finally take over everything.

One of the movements was used as background music in a scene in one of my favorate movies, , "Protocol" starring Goldie Hawn. I have always wondered what work it was derived from. Now I know! Tahnks!

I like repeats in general because it helps to firmly establish and firmly plant the musical ideas that will further develop as the piece progresses.

On ressent une certaine détresse et de Mozart dans ce quator à cordes. L'Adagio exprime la douleur du moment, et l'allegro final l'irritation d'un lion en cage. Mais c'est un passage délicat de sa vie qui se joue à ce moment là.

This quartet is poorly known. It is isolated between the series of 6 quartets to Haydn and the series of 3 quartets for the King of Prussia. it is often named the 'Hoffmeister' quartet.
@FranckSonata4 жыл бұрын
For the reason you point out, the K. 499 has long been known by the name "der Einzelgänger" ("the loner").

What choir is singing this?

Your comment made me aware of how the Smithson String Quartet plays here with such a singing tone and synergy that it suggests a choir of voices.

Col Klink's quartet at 9:37 :>) LOL
@bullitt75447 жыл бұрын
I just finished watching the episode for about the 100th time, it is one of the funniest episodes. You are way to smart to have added this comment here. To me I will always associate this with Colonel Klink and the Hammelburg Quartet. Now if they could only add The US Air Force number here it would be a "Wonder." Thanks a million you really made me laugh when I saw your comment, not likely to many others will think as much of Klink's rendition as I do. :)
