Not sure if everyone is familiar with this transcription of Mozart's oh-so-famous Turkish March, from his A major Sonata K. 331. Mr. Arcadi Volodos decided to transform it into this madhouse that is quite difficult to play that many find to be unappealing, yet most pianists find it to be super cool (including me)! This piece was one of my Summer "stretch" projects, meaning it was a piece that I felt challenged my technique quite a bit so I worked very hard on it during all of the month of August, and now I can say it is the hardest thing I can play. NOW, don't get me wrong, this performance is quite dodgy (check out Yuja Wang, or Volodos himself), and it's mostly because I haven't slept for about 22 hours, and my wrists just simply hurt from playing piano for 4 hours straight! Bear with me, I really wanted to show you guys this piece, and add another work to the I guess you could say, quote unquote "Classical" section of my repertoire here on youtube. Please enjoy guys!!!! Antonio Innocente I don't think he could play that much faster, he was struggling as it is at times. My point is that I would encourage people to see a concert pianist play it because the technique they show at that tempo is incredible, not because 'omg its so fast'

Nathan Nims To be honest he IS struggling to play this piece. It might not looks like it as he still plays it perfectly good, but if you watched lots of kyle videos he always puts lot of emotions when playing his pieces in his hand motions as well as body motion. But there you could see he had to fully concentrate on his hands, the piano and sheets to waste as little movement as possible to match the tempo of this piece. Of course it is still uncredibly well played, but when you compare it to volodo the difference is still blatant. ( Im not implying kyle is bad. No, he's is uncredibly talented and a hard worker and I couldn't even dream to reach his level on the piano, but you know, there's always someone better than you. )

Nathan Nims Lets compare, Volodos has been playing piano for 34 years, not only has he won numerous awards he was also the arranger of this piece. Kyle on the other hand has been playing for 15 years, a 19 year difference of experience, plus the fact that in the description to this video Kyle himself said this performance was quite 'dodgy' and that he really wanted to show us. If you aren't interested in seeing Kyle's development as a musician then why are you here in the first place.

It really annoys me that people feel the need to point out where he 'cheated' or made mistakes. This is a chronically difficult piece of music and takes a very skilled musician to play it well. Kyle plays it impeccably well considering this was just a 'summer project'. Yes he did change bits and made a few slips here and there but he does mention this in the video description! I'm sure if he wanted to, he could play it exactly as the sheets intended, given enough time and dedication but Kyle loves to make things his own as well and isn't that what music is all about? Wouldn't it be boring if music was played EXACTLY as written with no sense of freedom for the artist to add his/her own expression. It might as well be played by robots! Rant over! Would love to hear more pieces like this in future Kyle :)

+BroadwayPianist *No, it would not be boring if music was played exactly as written.* There is freedom within the notes written, the freedom of expression, dynamics within dynamic markings, and some tempo markings even imply a sense of freedom the player is allowed with the speed. So many classical pieces are played "as written" and yet can have entirely different feelings derived from subtle differences in the expressive playing of the pianist. So no, it might not as well be played by robots. I agree with the whole first part you said though, I'm fine with the slips and changes and all, that's like, Kyle's style.

Yea you are true both you. Even if you were to hear Yuja Wang or someone else they play the octave barrage differently now how the piece is supposed to be. But one reason is that it is veeeeeery difficult. Kyle Landry is an amazing pianist ,Im not saying he is bad or anything but it has to take more then 3 months or the entire summer to play the whole exact piece. He has made it a bit easier. I can play that song right now and I am only 13 years old but took me about 8 mons learning the piece everyday struggling to get a measure done.

It's surprising right? No page turns! This piece was far too technically-demanding to have page turns, so I ended up memorizing most of it (about 9 pages worth), and just had 3 pages for this part in the middle I never memorized :). Memorization for me is VERY difficult. I'm not sure why. I've always been a sheets guy :). Thank you!

Yes it is quite surprising! But I have watched you play a few other pieces since then, some with sheets and some without. When I was a kid, memorizing was difficult, but not so bad. Today, it's next to impossible. About all I can play without sheet music is Chopsticks! I've been wondering if any programs for iPads or tablets have developed to the point yet where it would make sense to load sheet music on them. Wouldn't it be great to store all your sheet music so you could always find it? - in order? Turning pages could be a lot easier too - swiping or just touching, maybe a foot pedal control like I used years ago when I transcribed dictation from an audio cassette from my boss? Maybe there could be programs where you could use them to compose and even make notations in your own handwriting in the margins. But the tablet would need to be large enough to see enough of the music for repeats and such, or some other kind of work-around techie thing instead. Maybe I will research this. They probably exist. I've just never seen one. Kyle, I think I know why memorization is very difficult for you. You have been blessed with a rare and special gift to compose and improvise and for that, not much, if any, sheet music is needed. But along with that natural talent, you have also spent countless hours practicing and studying music. You know music inside and out because you have put in the time to develop the skill. Pure natural talent + a passion for that talent + a tremendous development of the skill to further it can only equal truly great things (most likely if you use them for good). Someone I know once said, "To whom much is given, much is required." Maybe you know Him too. Anyway, it seems that you are taking this to heart. Many many people are now receiving very special music from you and you are helping to make their lives better by giving them one of life's best pleasures with your music. With some practice I found that the passage isn't all that hard. Just make sure you have your technique down. The passage after all the way to the end is what I see as the most difficult section (from the original)

As a high schooler, I've been playing an string instrument for several years, and just recently started piano. I hve a habit of learning sections of music once an only playing by memory each time. I never look at the pieces I play (except for the ones were required to play which are way too easy). Is this a bad habit I should break?

im a beginner myself but what id recommend is practicing your reading speed of music so you can try to be able to read and play pieces at tempo but i dont think memorizing a song you want to be able to play at any time is necessarily a bad thing

I wouldn't say it's a bad habit. I've been playing for about 4 years now and that is usually how I go about learning pieces of music. Although, as mentioned above, it can hinder your ability to sight-read, so as a supplement I usually pick pieces I've played before but forgotten and attempt to sight-read them every now and then. I played Fantasie Impromptu just a few weeks ago for Solo and Ensemble and learned it by perfecting and memorizing the piece one measure at a time; it worked out well. Just stick to playing and learning the way that is comfortable to you; music is a form of art, and there is never a "proper" way to produce art contrary to what most believe. As long as you enjoy what you're doing, that's all that matters :)

I've been playing piano for quite a few years now, and I learn the same way. If you're really fast at memorizing it's almost impossible not to do that. I would also caution you to observe the fingering and the notes very carefully as you're learning it, though, and go back and play it with the music every once in a while. It's easy to get into the habit playing an inaccurate chord tone or a wrong note that doesn't sound like a wrong note. If that happens you'll have to go to the effort of learning it all over again-- it's not pleasant, and it'll make it a trouble spot. I've done that way too many times. Other than that, power to you. It's nice to not have to struggle to memorize things :)

+Judyta Podeszwa Relax, it's not my arrangement, and I happen to enjoy playing it so it's not your decision to dictate what myself or others play. Volodos did a stellar job arranging this. It gives advanced pianists something else to tackle. It's not supposed to be Mozart anymore. It's just a showy, fun, flashy reincarnation of some Mozart melodies. No reason to freak out :)

He cheats from 2:45-3:00... It's written to play 4 note cords through 3 octaves. He just arpeggios a simple chord to cut the difficulty. Kyle, please do a new one, 3 years later properly! Thanks

***** There's a video from about 9 years ago of Yuja wang playing it without alterations. Most of the videos around of her playing it are altered, but not so much simplified; some repeated measures taken out, and the majestic ending preceded by arpeggios in the right hand before transitioning to the original, more difficult passage written (which sounds super awesome). Yeah I heard Volodos play it, it's pretty awesome, but I like Yuja Wang's touch, the softness that she plays the left hand in many spots where Volodos plays it strongly. Not that there's a right or wrong of course (;

You're a BEAST! I like how you didn't go for that little bit of extra speed and sacrificed playing clean!! Great job. That little bit of faster tempo will come with time. leave it alone for about a month and come back to it for about a week then leave it alone, again, for a couple of weeks then practice it again for about 5 days (playing clean of course) then..... leave it alone for a few months and come back to it and you'll be surprised of how fast and clean it has become. That is not an easy piece to play and you did so damn great!!! I actually like it the way it is (The way you play it at that tempo). it's perfect.
