Most of the greatest composers preferred Mozart. I'm not biased towards Mozart, but it's interesting to hear their opinion: Haydn preferred Mozart over Beethoven, Beethoven thought Mozart was better than him and was his favorite composer, Schubert preferred Mozart, Brahms preferred Mozart, Tchaikovsky preferred Mozart, Mendelssohn preferred Beethoven but later in life switched to Mozart, Chopin preferred Mozart, Dvorak preferred Mozart, Ravel preferred Mozart, and some of these composers sometimes insulted Beethoven and Bach. Wagner equally admired all three composers.

JOHANNES BRAHMS (1896): "I always find Beethoven's C Minor concerto (the Third Piano Concerto) much smaller and weaker than Mozart's. . . . I realize that Beethoven's new personality and his new vision, which people recognized in his works, made him the greater composer in their minds. But after fifty years, our views need more perspective. One must be able to distinguish between the charm that comes from newness and the value that is intrinsic to a work. I admit that Beethoven's concerto is more modern, but not more significant!I also realize that Beethoven's First Symphony made a strong impression on people. That's the nature of a new vision. But the last three Mozart symphonies are far more significant. . . . Yes, the Rasumovsky quartets, the later symphonies-these inhabit a significant new world, one already hinted at in his Second Symphony. But what is much weaker in Beethoven compared to Mozart, and especially compared to Sebastian Bach, is the use of dissonance. Dissonance, true dissonance as Mozart used it, is not to be found in Beethoven. Look at Idomeneo. Not only is it a marvel, but as Mozart was still quite young and brash when he wrote it, it was a completely new thing. What marvelous dissonance! What harmony! You couldn't commission great music from Beethoven since he created only lesser works on commission-his more conventional pieces, his variations and the like. When Haydn or Mozart wrote on commission, it was the same as their other works."

Color is the keyboard, the eyes are the harmonies, the soul is the piano with many strings. The artist is the hand that plays, touching one key or another, to cause vibrations in the soul.
Before everyone starts arguing which is better! Really? Beethoven is greater! Mozart is greater! Does it truly matter? Now everyone comes: Beethoven was deaf, sure! But that doesn't at all matter when composing or making music. Just like Mozart he could compose in his head, although Mozart was even better in that case. ( Mozart composed symphonies within days, composed the Don Giovanni Overture the night before the premiere, it was as all in his head ). Both are amazing but you can't decide which one is better based on whether he was deaf or not. Also Mozart died young, if you were to use deafness in you criteria of deciding which one was better, you can for sure also use age. If we were just to compare hem both at the age of 35, Mozart definitely was better, but Beethoven lived longer, that's reality. So? Beethoven was deaf, Mozart died young. Both terrible things! But solely saying the deafness puts him above Mozart is a no go. By comparing the music however, we can definitely say they're on the same level. My opinion however is is that Mozart is more of a genius ( He had inner freedom and he never had trouble with composing, Beethoven had! ) but sometimes I like Beethoven more, Beethoven is more like the limit of music and Mozart the perfection of music. Beethoven makes my blood flowing, Mozart makes me feel like I'm in heaven. I love them both, which one is better? Does it truly matter? After all, many people nowadays prefer Miley Cyrus over both of them... :(

Saludos!

Although the time machine hasn't been invented that would take us back to meet these geniuses, we do meet them, in a sense, when we hear their music. This is how they live on past their lifetimes. Fast forward to today, and there's so much music of so many different kinds and times in the world, yet there's something cosmic about hearing music composed centuries earlier, partly because we're hearing these works played by modern orchestras, but mainly because the music has lived that long.

Mozart or Beethoven? It depends on how you are feeling on the day you listen. Sometimes you will prefer Mozart and sometimes you will prefer Beethoven. Also the season of the year, the breakfast you had, the fight you had or did not have with your partner. The more melancholy I am the more I prefer Beethoven. The more joy I feel the more I prefer Mozart. Then again I still prefer Tchaikovsky to both!

Mozart is deeper, in general his most powerful compositions are incomparable. No one else has so much variety and depth in one music. Moreover, he wrote in different genres and his music is not repeatable. And Beethoven is the best continuation of Haydn. Yes, he, too, can say the strongest, but not like Mozart. This is clear. If you completely surrender to music, you understand that he lags behind Mozart. This is more evident in the best works of both masters. The color of music from Mozart is not repeatable; he never took something similar from anyone. All colors of Music are unique and not repeatable. And style and harmony and everything. Music just flies with Mozart or is it something incomparable!

I find Mozart more complex AND beautiful than Beethoven. The fugal ending of Mozart's Jupiter is an explosion of counterpoint so complex human ear cannot hear. Beethoven couldn't write intricate contrapuntal complexity like the F minor Organ Fantasia K608 or G minor Organ Fugue K401 in his 30s, and more importantly, Beethoven's 9th symphony is way too overrated. It suddenly "stops and starts" in the middle of the 4th movement. Even Verdi criticized its poor writing for the voices. (shows why Beethoven gave up on opera) It doesn't have the sense of balance and form like Mozart's 40th. (as explained by Leonardo Bernstein) Beethoven told Czerny he admired the contrapuntal complexities and classical structural balance of Mozart's String Quartet in A major K.464. He copied Mozart's K.464 to write his own Op.18 No.5 in A major. He also copied K.465 in C major, "the Dissonance Quartet" to write his own Op.59 No.3 in C major. The near-atonal sounding introduction of Beethoven's Op.59 No.3 was actually copied from Mozart's Dissonance Quartet. The only exceptional late work by Beethoven is String Quartet No.14 in C sharp minor 1st movement. Grosse Fuge gets boring after like 2,3 minutes, seems like it's going nowhere. The last movement of Hammerklavier is a mess. Just way too long-winded. Whereas Mozart in his late period, always knows where he's going, even with complex techniques. Just Listen to the Fantasia in F minor for organ I mentioned above. Or even Adagio and Fugue in C minor for String Orchestra. Masonic Funeral Music is Perfection itself.

Ive never heard of Requiem before but goodness heck after listening to a lot of Mozart pieces and listening to this at night, I must say Mozart did an supereality job of composing requiem. For someone who is known for his light-hearted music, hearing requiem is definitely a change of pace. How can a piece of music be so pretty and creepy at the same time - Music is beautiful- even if Im no fan of playing the classical music itself -
@davidhopkins9830 Жыл бұрын
Please listen to the entire Requiem. It is a piece of music composed of several sections. One section is more beautiful than the next. It is based on the religious service for the deceased. The piece is based on the prayers of that service. The entire composition is magnificent and should be heard at least once in a person's lifetime.
