Here's a little history on this car that I was personally involved with. I was working for British Motors (BMC) in Palo Alto, Ca. in 1979. A young Brazilian came into the dealership and was asking about MG's. We looked at several cars, talked for a long time . As I recall, he was an MBA student at Stanford. He told me his family was producing a TD replica....this was a copy of the old post war MG's which were so popular on the West coast...everywhere really. Kjell Qvale had been importing them for years. He explained to me all about the plans to produce this car. At some point he would be personally involved. I think he was really in the early stages of doing some market research. That's why he was talking to me. I wished him the best of luck. My sense would be that this is probably a pretty good car and worth investing some money in. Don't skimp ! You'll never lose money and you may make some in the long run. Enjoy ! Steve

Existed in Brazil, a furniture factory with the name of Lafer, so they decided to make a car, with a VW air engine and that was very similar to the English MG, hence MP Lafer was born !! Existia no Brasil, uma fabrica de moveis que chamava se Lafer, então decidiram fazer um carro, com mecânica VW a ar e que fosse bem parecido com o MG inglês, dai nasceu o MP Lafer!!

There is at least one of these in New Zealand as I've worked on it about 10 years ago. It was a tan coloured one. Only difference is that it didn't have the three spotlights in front of the grille. I was working in a euro workshop and i was the only one who had experience with air cooled vws. You could one of our government departments . N.Z.T.A. look it up online.

That is a fun car, and looks much more solid than those cheap kits. It looks so ‘old British’, I’d have to make it British Racing Green, and put some sort of winged hood ornament on the top of that grill.

Cool car, Jason "Bond!" I don't know where you could get parts but there is this dude his channel is DiagnoseDan. He is from Ireland I think not sure, but he works on a lot of VW's BMW's Porsche's & for the first time I saw him working on an Opel & found out that the Opel is still manufacturing cars & SUV's they are just not available in the US. I know this doesn't pertain to you but he is good about answering comments & possibly lead you to a guy. Good luck & hope this helps.😎👍👍👍

Classic Motor Carriage. CMC, made a version of the MGTD in 2 version versions. 1 was VW Powered like yours. The other version had a full steel tube frame that accepted Ford Pinto/Mustang 2 running gear. You had your choice of 4, V6 or for the crazys a V8 small block Ford 260, 289 or 302 cu.in.engine. you may check on EBay for the MGTD radiator emblem. Please get the forward wiring straightened out ASAP. That area if a fire waiting to happen. It is also the reason your driving(large center lite) and your dog lites(2 smaller lites) don't work. Wiring should be neat and held off the luggage area floor. Love the yellow. Any good upholstery shop can fix your seat RIP. Good luck on getting pristine.
@5150mxVW5 жыл бұрын
Hi Brut , I'm looking for an " MP " badge for the front as this car is an MP Lafer , not a MGTD . This was part of 5 car deal last summer , so I basically changed the oil , drove it once and parked it . Agreed on the wiring disaster !👍

My guess is this car was brought in from a non title state in 2005. The VIN on the pan came back clean and there's no MSO for the body. The local police signed off on it and gave it the current year registration for the title.
@thomaswright62505 жыл бұрын
I believe in JC Whitney catalog you could get parts for them
@vitorcamilo67965 жыл бұрын
The difference in years between the chassis and the body is because it was forbidden to import the entire car to the United States, so the MP Lafer was imported in kit form and completed with local parts. this also explains the difference between the tail lights and the front direction lights.
@comodorootaviano46845 жыл бұрын
@leftright60544 жыл бұрын
Basically it's a Beetle in disguise looking like a MGTD so the mechanical parts would be easy to get. I see one of them on sale where I live and I'm interested.

jep. Parts for MG are not so expensive. Fitted with them will make it superb. I mean, for originality "purposes" - the average doesnt know the MG had a front motor and the MP not. Like Freddy Mercury once sung; show must go on. grins I suggest to change the steering wheel to a wooden Grant - if you like to spend additional money into. But its already a nice toy you have.

When kit cars are finally built, they have to be inspected by the proper agency in your state. Whatever year that it is done, becomes the year for the car when a new title is issued. My donor car was a 69 beetle completed and inspected in PA in 1979. Hence, my car, which looks like a 1952 MG TD is titled as a 79 MG TD and not the VW which it really is. Regarding kit cars, I don’t think you’ll find 2 alike, because everyone has a different builder, except for the few factory assembled models. Hard to find original body panels, but MGMagic is a good sources for accessories- even tops and upholstery. Everything mechanical is VW which is super available. Expensive of course, but you’re not in this to make a ton of money - right?

I covet this car. I love the yellow. There must be a place to get parts. It is just too cool not to have a following of people that want to keep them going. The wiring harness looks a little shady to me. Is the battery supposed to be that close to the gas tank?

Cheese, what for a messy "wiring" under the bonnet ..trunk lid. I cant believe ppl put such a botch together and wanted money for it. As far i remember one made mods from this with front engine rwd and a tubular frame. But they had torsion problems so they stopped further advertising. The tubes where to thin. The original MG TD had often chrome wire wheels. If you want a perfect restoration for the veneer i can mail you a source in the U.K. They do factory approved restorations for classi(c) cars from Rolls Royce, Bentley & Aston Martin.
