There can't be a second referendum before they've acted on the first, what if remain wins the second referendum and as a result a pro leave government is voted in the GE and does everything it can to bring the vote back and then leave wins the third referendum? the majority voted to leave so the UK leaves, that's it, that's a democracy. There is no such thing as "more democracy" that's literally saying let's keep going until we eventually win.

"Anything they makes *me* look unaccountable is a threat to the credibility of democracy." That's something Brittish politicians and dictators have in common. I'm not making some grand point, other than to read the book "The Dictator's Handbook" which explains stuff like this. For me, the TLDR is that British politics was built upon protecting the image of politicians, not the democratic process by which they're governed by the people.

@Siedler Joe They won't. It is a game at this point. They're playing political chicken. Everyone is so damn set in their ways and policies that there will be no great change to the status quo. Here's what could potentially happen: 1. Theresa May comes back with minor adjustments to the deal, just substantial enough that the speaker has to let it be voted on again. It will then be defeated again. 2. Nothing happens, they just run down the clock a third time while engaging in all sorts of actionism to appear like they are working on it. Anway, I'm expecting a vote on another extension mid-october and May to go begging for yet again more time, get it in exchange for a commitment to the next budget, and this all continues until the next general election and possibly beyond.
@whoknew2273

@thomasjetzer2823
@thomasjetzer2823 5 жыл бұрын
@Siedler Joe Yeah, the EU was rather firm the first two times that an extension isn't happening without a concrete plan and then still granted the extensions. Extensions. plural. They just attached a new condition, hoping the UK parliament is too busy bickering among themselves to fulfill it. See, while you are absolutely right that the EU has no obligation to keep extending the timeframe and noone really wants the whole circus to continue, the only option would be for someone to stand up and veto the next extension. Problem is, the one who does that gets the blame for the whole mess that follows. Everyone else is just going to pretend that they could have fixed this situation if not for the traitor that said no. So the UK government wants to leave with "no deal" only when they can blame it on the EUs unwillingness to negotiate and the EU only wants the "no deal" to happen when the UK government says that they will leave without one just to be out. It's a perfect prisoners dilemma, and that's why everyone will just keep playing kick the can down the road until someone messes up and misses a crucial deadline or blows a fuse and then that guy is gonna get all the blame and we can finally move on.

He has behaved shockingly corruptly. Blocking amendments that he doesn’t agree with on the basis that the bill was unamendable, and then, against the advice of his legal team, allowing other MPs to amend THE SAME BILL with amendments he did agree with. This is tyrannical. People don’t understand the danger of what he did, but basically he set his office up at a level beyond that of the elected government or PM, almost an attempted coup. And MPs are going along with this, which is probably the biggest sea change in British government since Charles 1st lost his head. And it will come back to bite MPs when in the future, speakers of the house of commons start throwing their weight about in order to benefit their own favoured policies and bills, because if Bercow is allowed to get away with it, speakers in the future can get away with it.

Darkwintre Yup, it’s been more or less a blood feud that Tories has been holding towards Bercow for refusing to cave into their little power grasp. The slithering scheme that they tried to pull in 2015 were even more humiliating for Tories as it was the last ditch effort of the Tories leader at the time before stepping down and it was owed to Labours and Tory backbenchers that it was thwarted, so while Bercow might not be interested in pettiness with this government, it would be safe to say that he has no respect for the frontbenchers of his own party.

The sad thing (and irony) is that Brexit will make the position of these people even worse. @@ejo3659 Erm I'm not sure as to your meaning, but I think maybe it's that the Conservative party has never been moderate in it's real position, moderate meaning intune with what the majoirty of voters want which is true, but they really had at that point turned it upto 11 and with Liz Truss's lot they have kept on steaming ahead on that train. Camoran and Osborn's austrity killed what was it like 300,000 people, so yeh not exactly what I would call moderate, but my point was not that the conservatives were ever moderate, but they have become more extreme. Well okay before Thachter the Convervatives were moderate and truely actually supported public spending and services so to say they were never fiscally moderate isn't true, but it has been 44 years since Thatcher took office and the change in the conservatives was underway before that point, so considering I'm only 33 and I wasn't even partically poltically aware until the age of 16, for me it has from my personal experience been forever. Like sure I supported gay marrage, I thought the poor should be looked after and that high quality healthcare should be free at the point of usage, but at the time I didn't see much daylight between the Labour and the Conservatives, during the campaign in 2010 by which point I was 18 I supported Labour full heartedly, but I digress.

These people in the Parliament really forgot what they are, representatives of the people who are the ruler of these country. At least that's what Democracy is about i think. We don't need rulers, we probably do not even need a government in the classic sense of ruling a country. There is a reason why Brexiteers are shy of a second referendum. Britain is about to fall apart over this decision, done by the people no doubt about that, but also done by laziness of voters. It snuck into place by protesters not really knowing about the wider consequences of it. So alone the fact that Scotland and Northern Ireland are very unhappy with this decision should cause a second referendum.

So, as I understand it, it's the Speaker's job to be impartial. And they are trying to oust him, because he allows non-conservative business to go on, in the hope that he is replaced with someone who exclusively favors the conservative agenda. What that sounds like to me, from outside Britain is an attempt to undermine the political system.

Everyone in there hates him because he's unbiased. Don't go blaming any particular political party. If they had their way they would all have a speaker biased to their party and their party alone. Essentially right now all the parties sort of want a "dictatorship lite" where the 100 people or so in the party get to make all the rules and the others just... don't exist

Ousting the speaker in favour of one that is biased towards your view of the constitution is completely democratic, but another referendum asking the citizens of the UK on their current standpoint is undemocratic. Proposing the same deal over and over and over again despite people clearly strongly disliking it is completely democratic, and anyone who says it isn't is clearly biased and should be replaced by someone who is biased in our favour. Got it.

Isn’t it illegal to clap in the house of commons
@alexpotts6520
@alexpotts6520 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, it's against the rules, but it's also the Speaker's job to enforce the rules, and they can apply discretion if they choose. In moments of high drama it's a bit picky to tell people not to clap, he's well within his rights to let it pass (especially as they were applauding *him).*
@alganhar1
@alganhar1 5 жыл бұрын
@@alexpotts6520 Exactly, most people, including most Brits, are unaware that the vast majority of the rules the House of Commons work under are NOT Laws, but rules and guidelines, not hard and fast strictures. There is a certain amount of discretion available in most things in the House. Even funnier are all the comments from people stating that this or that is Unconstitutional... when the UK has no codified Constitution. Rather it has a series of Laws and Documents that together loosely form an uncodified 'Constitution'.
