The yellow car illustrated on the original 1968 MPC kit box was a custom show car made by Dodge in 1967-68, and is the origin of the name "Super Bee." It was a real car, but only one was made. The yellow paint faded to white toward the rocker panels -- that treatment is captured in MPC's illustration. The car also had the side pipes shown in the illustration. Apparently the kit lost those side pipes when it was updated to make their 1969 Coronet kits. I wish Round2 brought them back -- I wouldn't mind having a model of that '68 Super Bee in my collection. The black hood and fender tops are also correct for the "1968" Super Bee. For more on the real car, see the February 1998 issue of Collectible Automobile magazine.

Great video Raoul and I’m glad I was able to help you with making it. Interesting that it came with two sets of seats and the trailer hitch. The only thing I missed out on was smelling that vintage plastic when you opened the bag.

Great comparison old and new. I kind of like the crisper details on the older kit. Looks like it wouldn't get lost under a few coats of paint and be easier to pick out with chrome paint. Thanks for sharing.

I believe the box-side note about "matching paint available at your dealer" to mean your hobby dealer, not your Dodge dealer.
@TheMuscleCarModeler
@TheMuscleCarModeler Жыл бұрын
It says "paint to match illustrations available at your local dealer" I'm pretty sure that they didn't have touch up paint sticks back then in 68. The only illustrations were the sales brochures and the last page of them had all the available colors for the car. It's on the original box. I'm surprised that they kept it for the new box or didn't change it for the hobby shops of today.

Thanks for the review. I want do a copy of my wife’s 68 sport satellite convertible. I have the 69 GTX convertible kit and I think it’s fairly close, or close enough for me. But the interior is way off. And because it’s a convertible, that will always stand out. I was going to buy this kit hoping the interior would be closer.

The SuperBee was the copycat Road Runner because Dodge saw how well RR was doing. R/T would be more like GTX so you won't see R/T on SuperBees, that wouldn't make sense. The '68 Coronet 'vert at car shows back then had the SuperBee stripes but as we know didn't make it to production. As a kid I had a nice '68 Coronet 500 with the chrome side scallops and deluxe blacked out rear plus fancy interior lighting package. I miss that car more than the 'Cuda...and I bought the 'Cuda new. But for 1:25 I had a lifted drag or funny car '68 Coronet with chrome chassis model kit I had as kid..MPC? I don't know but I wish they'd find those molds. I did mine candy flake Lime....good ol days. 👀

I think they met your hobby dealer or not your Dodge dealer when they were referring to going to get paint. LOL
@TheMuscleCarModeler
@TheMuscleCarModeler Жыл бұрын
That would apply better to todays kits but that is on the original kit as well. Plus it says “paint to match illustrations available at your local dealer” Back when this kit was new you could bet a sales brochure and see all the exterior color options. Interior color options and pictures of the engine. I forgot to mention it in my video but, did you notice both the original kit and this new issue don’t have any paint call outs? Nothing saying paint the engine blue, paint the air cleaner black. Nothing at all. That was common with kits back in the 50’s and 60’s. Now just about every kits tells you what to paint what color.

Enquiring minds want to know: What's the *date* on the *original* *decals* ? I'm willing to bet it's from Spring/Summer 1967 (my '72 Duster MPC Annual's decal sheet is marqued '05/1971'). So many improvements on the new tooling ! I love the positive locating pins, the full chassis/floor pan/ wheel wells, separate exhaust, flashed-over holes for the exhaust, and the decal sheet. If I could change two things on the new tooling: 1.) Correct exhaust manifolds 2.) Correct brake master cylinder Both are easily rectified, but it'd have been nicer if they were corrected/updated during the retooling. Thanks much for the review !

Thanks, Raoul. Great job. I just picked up the new kit today. But I am totally confused about the decals in the new kit. The kit, as boxed, is definitely an R/T, not a Super Bee, which was a different trim level. But the new kit does not appear to have the R/T stripes, only the Super Bee striping. Am I missing something? As you build your kit, how do plan to address this? Thanks!
@TheMuscleCarModeler

The side ones with the super bee logo are extra long. Once you put the top section on. Then use the side ones. Match the long section and it will cover the rest of the quarter panel. The super bee will fold under and be on the inside. Or just measure and cut it shorter.
