This model is special to me. I bugged my parents for a year to buy me a Schwinn Apple Crate.. I finally got it.. about year and a half later I started driving and it ended up sitting in my basement. My dad came home one day and asked me if I would sell it to one of his coworkers for his son. I’m sixty five now but I still wish I had that bike..sitting in my basement.

It wasn’t brand new. but what today ppl call, “Gently Used” blue and white if I remember correctly.... had fun with it. shifting the gears pretending it had an engine... it ran its course, had fun with it Never thinking it might be worth $$ in the future. I think that’s the best way to appreciate why you have. Enjoy it and look back on the fun you had with your friends and their bikes...

I remember looking at the brochure with such longing. My Dad was a generous man, but no way was he going to fork over $85 - $95 for a kid's bike (around $600 in today's money). I did eventually get a yellow sting ray that did not have gears or hand brakes, just a regular bike with coaster brakes. But I was absolutely thrilled to get it and rode it to death everywhere before I finally outgrew it. Fond memories and just got the model kit! My bike was yellow, but I'll probably build the Orange Krate, as that was the one I coveted the most.

Chris, thanks so much for ANOTHER terrific review! I absolutely LOVED this bike when I was a kid, and I have a kinda funny story to tell you about it. Back around 1968-69 my Dad bought me an Apple Krate Schwinn that looked a lot like the model you built. One day my Mom wanted me to go over to my Uncle's (her brother's house) for the day as she was going somewhere, and didn't want me in the house alone all day. My Uncle who only lived about 5 blocks away, I rode over to his house on the bike. I remember leaving the bike on his porch and when we came back out about an hour later, it was GONE! Of course I was very upset as an eight year old kid, because I think it was the first time I ever had anything stolen (yes thieves were thriving in the '60's). My Uncle and I got into his car (a '67 Toronado) and we were driving around seeing if a kid was riding my bike. About a block away from the house, all of sudden four kids come riding out of the alley way right in front of us, and one of them was riding my stolen bike. I shouted "THERE IT IS!" and my Uncle very quickly threw the car in park and sprinted after the kids! He was a VERY fast runner in those days as he was a state champion sprinter in the early '60's when he was in high school. He caught up with the kid, made me get out of the car, and I never found out where he took the kid and what happened to him. At least I got my bike back and from then on I would NEVER leave the bike outside again after that! I got to get one of these kits and build it like the one I had 50 years ago. Real ones cost a FORTUNE now and it's amazing the things we took for granted as kids can be worth so much now (old Hot Wheels are another example). Thanks again for the video, and keep up the great work!

Cool build I had a Schwinn stingray early 60s but was a Frankienstein bike, built it by getting parts from second hand and junk stores Could still call it a Schwinn all parts where Schwinn just hard to classify which model so just called it a stingray since the frame was that, best thing was only a fraction of the cost they sold for.

Agree that spokes and brake cables WAY out of scale, cool model and if someone was crafty enough to wire the wheels and use scale wire for cables, you could really make this one stunning build. I think I came across 1/6 scale chain as well, I'm sure it was for a motorcycle though, it may be a bit too large as well. Still though, what an awesome kit. Coming from the generation after this, I only have memories of these parted out and usually tossed into the back of the shed, given up for a spanking new Mongoose Super Goose with Motomag 2's, now that would be a kit!! And much easier to scale the wheels!! Great build.

Yup, me too. I had a cheap knock off as well. It was still cool though.

I had a blue huffy as my first bicycle. I thought it was the best thing goin, until I got my first mountain bike lol. Then it's been all downhill ever since.

I went from my Huffy SuperStar to the brand new ultra cool Murray Street Machine, one of the early mountain bike styles.

Never owned one. I do have the Schwinn Continental still from when I was a younger man.

Great looking kit. The vinyl hose looks a little out of scale to me, but that's an easy fix. I'm going to be looking for this kit, and the 10 speed when it comes out. I still like my Huffy blue 3 speed better. I miss that bike.
