As a firefighter for the past 30 years as well as Fire Investigator/Inspector. I am appalled at this entire operation. I have heard real witnesses accounts that anyone could listen to of people being directed into Front Street. This police chief should be fired. The mayor fired. The governor fired. Allow people to come in that care about the people to help. I would 100% come to help Maui get to the bottom of this. All they will continue to do is stonewall the media and the people of Maui. Cover their tracks and create a narrative that works for them. The police chief keeps saying “Our people “. Hippocrate, they are not your people your not even from there. You couldn’t do your job in Nevada and certainly can’t in Maui. I am disgusted with this entire situation. Fire all of them. Clearly they all were incompetent at preventing this. There are so many individuals and agencies who performed negligently and proved themselves incompetent. The police officers who re-directed people back into town - and not letting them flee; the man who didn’t activate the warning sirens - with the weak excuse that people would think it was a tsunami (like they’d see the smoke and think the ocean was on fire); the water agency official who refused to release water to fight the fires until the fires were consuming the town; the power company that didn’t turn off the power as the winds increased to 80 knots. All of these people and agencies failing. These inactions are not a series of individual mistakes but rather a culture problem. Yes, it does have to do with values and politics. “If we don’t do anything, we can’t be blamed because there will always be someone else to point the finger at,” or “Global climate change is to blame (and we need more money.)” Try explaining that to the people who have lost family and friends as well as their homes. Try writing that on the headstones of the scores of children who were sent home from school and told to shelter in place. Their final hours and minutes on this earth had to have been horrifying and immensely painful.

Sorry, but you don't know what you are talking about. I have lived 60 years on these islands and never have I heard the sirens used for anything besides a Tsunami warning. From a little kid you are thought that every month on 1-3 if you hear the sirens they are testing and if you hear it any other time its a tsunami coming and you need to evacuate and get to high grounds. It has never been used for fires or high winds. The whole purpose of the sirens it to warn you before the Tsunami hits not after. So he was right if they sounded the sirens there would of been more confusion and for locals who have been taught all there lives to head for high grounds they would have headed towards Lahainaluna Rd. where the fire was. Then you wanted them to turn off the power before a storm that was projected to miss the islands by several hundreds of miles. Do you know how many Sever Storms and Hurricane's that have actually hit these islands in my 60 years, far to many to count and yet never have they ever turned off the power before, during or after these events. By the way if you turn off the power you cant activate the sirens. So now, what would you have done? Quick the fire is literally burning a mile a minute.

Jeremy, take a look at Jonathan Herzog Maui Fire escape vid. This chronicles his long drive on the roads you are familiar with. He comes across blocked streets etc. He eventually abandoned his vehicle went to the water but then leaves and walks out to safety. It’s a long video but very informative.

I can tell you with all honesty that I was stuck at the Foodland farms at that exact time and I was told that the bypass road going up and away from the fire was closed off by PD ! I sat there for almost an hour before a police officer told me I could go up the bypass and get out of Lahaina … it was already too late by that time!! As I started to drive up … the fire was starting to cross the bypass at the housing construction site ! I had to turn around and head back down into town !

There is no way Steven Paddock or anyone could have fired into the concert venue from the 4rth floor. It’s simple physics. I am in now way defending the police chief. Just stating facts. Blocking Honoapiilani north bound (more lanes) to send people into Front street (2 lanes) because of downed lines on Honoapiilani, when fire was coming down hill seems like poor judgement. Front street merged with northbound Honoapiilani and witnesses say that intersection was blocked by police. How fast was the fire moving down hill when they made that fatal decision? Bottom line is they waited much to long to evacuate people.

If I was stuck behind CARS, because of a police road block blocking a safe exit I would of drove around the blockaide and I know of ppl who actually didnt listen to the police and drove over the electircal lines and got to safety and are alive today. Those who listened to the police, some of them are dead, those who left there cars and jumped into the ocean are alive. And that another mistake made as the Coast Guards claims there rescued 14 ppl when others were in the ocean for over 4 hours, fighting under-tows that were dragging them out to sea? How many bodies have been found on the bottom of the harbour? Has anybody even looked there?
