Love how only the optical threshold glues every track together, it is also a great way to start using this compressor, after the glue, you will slowly learn the rest, but it glues as easily as nothing else.

Just got this plug-in, and found it extremely daunting at first glance. This video, however, was a wonderfully in-depth tutorial that made it all make sense in a simple to follow way. Thank you!

Interesting review, but once you add the guitars back in, aren't they negating the drum sound you set up with their nonstop sustain? To actually get the drum sound you set up with the drums soloed, wouldn't it be wiser to set up a drum bus, and put the Shadow Hills on that, so it wouldn't be affected by the guitars? The drum sound just seemed to go away once the guitars were put back in.

still not understanding this whole discrete process. would help to have a few more details around the benefits of using both or switching to duel mono. clearer discussion around the thought process with these steps.

A sidechain filter is just a sinewave with a highpass filter on it feeding the compressors sidechain. So the higher you put it the less the compressor will react to low frequencies

Thank you for this video about this monster. It definitely has its own quirks and character, and it is difficult to estimate where to best use it because, depending on the settings especially with the discrete section, the effect can be very drastically not musical. The discrete can squash your audio to a pulp after any transient, but not necessarily in a musical way, but rather in a very "pumpy" way. The output transformers can make a subtle but noticeable effect that is very musical. However, I think the choice of music to demonstrate this was not good in the video because it is by its nature already full of harmonic distortion, so it is impossible to appreciate the harmonics being added by the transformers. Where these output transformer types make a noticeable difference is with clean, clear audio sources, where the harmonic distortion introduced can really be noticed. I would urge Mike to redo that comparison using maybe a vocal track, or a nice acoustic mix. You will really appreciate then what that output section can do, and it is subtle but really apparent and useful. It is hard to find examples on how to make best use of this wonderful beast. The original hardware unit retails for about $10K in the US, so this free emulation is an unbelievable gift, letting you put as many of these as you want on your tracks without having to mortgage your life. Thank you!

Hmm...I couldn't hear any difference with the transformer...I though that maybe my ears are not so good, so then I decided to try a spectrum analyser. Absolutely nothing changed...I like it as a compressor, but the transformer tone thing...not buying it...

Even on MacBook speakers you can hear the difference between the Iron and Steel pretty clearly. Brings a different clarity to the punch/low end. The Nikel less so, but much easier to hear on monitors!

I'm sure that was a big discussion during the design of this at bx. It has the exact same look as the original which is also a bit messy.
