Ride along with MPGomatic.com as we aim for 100 MPG in the remarkably fuel efficient 2016 Toyota Prius Hybrid. The new Prius crushes the numbers we achieved with the Prius C and glides more efficiently than any hybrid we've ever tested. This is a Prius Three (not the Two/Eco).
My full review of the 2016 Prius will post in the Autobytel channel. If you're shopping for a high-MPG hybrid, you'll also want to check out the "Ten Things You Need to Know About the 2106 Toyota Prius" that I shot for Autobytel, at the first media drive event back in November.

I have had sports bike and gone fast because the way they rev, sound and feel. I have a gen 2 Prius and drive slow because of the way it is. Non manual, light steering, heavy and a screen that shows when you're using battery, charging it etc and the mpg I feel that it's all psychological to get the best mpg. I drive 78 miles to work and back a day so fuel economy, comfort and reliability was important to me. Also its quite a spacious car and practical for when I air bnb or need to buy something large like a cupboard. They aren't fun but definitely useful

This is awesome, the Prius 2016 is a gas sipper! I drive 11 miles to work one way on Eco mode (Prius two) with 8 of those miles on the highway btw 55-65 mph in CA and Using these methods I can average 75-90 mpg per trip without thinking too much! It really becomes second nature after a month or two of practice. Thank you!

***** At the moment, I'm driving a 5-speed 2008 Focus for commuting, which gets 35 MPG, but I've decided I want an automatic for that job, and the new Prius looks like a solid choice. I already have a 6-speed RX-8, so I figure it won't kill me.

I'm also a car enthusiast here. Yes the Prius isn't a good car in terms of driving dynamics, but its efficiency in gas use is unparalleled. Every single time I drive a gas car and I hit the brake or idle in rush hour traffic I keep thinking "how great this would be if I was in a hybrid". Having the ability to reuse wasted braking energy is something I envy in hybrids, and while that won't change my perception of the Prius, I do respect it's technology & engineering.

Cool. I enjoyed the orginal one in the Prius C and I was interested to see this one in the new Prius. It would be interesting to see the exact same route done in that same 2016 Prius, but with some variants. Eg: Do it one time - sticking to the speed limits - but trying to drive as inefficiently as possible, to see how the Prius is under those circumstances. And a halo run at night when there is no other traffic on the roads, tyres overinflated, no aircon or heater on, nearly empty fuel tank, all excess fuel removed, moderately cool temperature outside, etc... Everything being done to get the "ideal" economy run. So opposite extremes, but in the same car on the same route to see absolute best vs worst case scenarios with everything else being equal.

I lease the 2015 Prius and in the summertime at least 55 miles that's Highway and City. When I drive to my neighborhood I'm always on EV mode. Thanks for the video it helps out. But I'm going to buy the 2017 Prius Prime which you can do up to 28 miles on EV mode before the engine cuts in. It gets it 685 total range so basically I can drive from Syracuse New York to New York City and back and still have gas left over. We Prius drivers don't drive slow we drive conservatively.

I like you are doing the test on normal roads. ...... have you done any tests on the high speed roads 70 mph..... cheers dan

raptor pome It's tough to start and end with the same battery level. It would take a lot of regeneration to make it happen. I can't redo this test with this specific car - all of my test vehicles come from the manufacturer media fleets. I do highway testing with a target speed of 68 MPH. The state limit in NJ is 65.

Cool video, well done! I like to drive efficiently as well. But I have gone back to normal driving by focusing on safety instead of MPG. There were a few reasons I stopped doing the hyper milling (for fun): 1) I like to see the actual numbers to get the sense of instant satisfaction. However, with a long term calculation of MPG, I found most car's display of MPG numbers are inaccurate (inflated). So at least I know that these numbers are not that meaningful. 2) I have driven Prius and watched its MPG all the time. However, here is the biggest fallacy that most drivers overlooked. On a hybrid car, it uses both gasoline and battery power. So when you do an MPG test on a short run, you need to take in the consideration the amount of gas and battery power to begin with. The car in this video started with more battery juice than at the end. This means that some previously stored energy was not taken into account when calculating the MPG number. Again, it is not that meaningful. 3) Where you reset the MPG counter is also important. To get a real consumption, it should be reset at the same point where the car returns, at the same speed. I can reset the counter on my V8 car at a cruising speed and get over 50+ MPG. These said, to get a valid fuel consumption, we need to understand all the parameters and taken all of them into account. I can do it. But I grew tired of it after I found that my annual fuel cost (10k miles) is only gonna be 1/3 of the cost of registration and insurance. Why bother trying to beat the EPA numbers? Sadly, we are not gaining much here.
@mpgomatic
@mpgomatic 8 жыл бұрын
Many thanks for the kind words and insight, +Gold Cloud! I don't consider myself to be a hypermiler. I enjoy stomping on the pedal more than squeaking the most miles out of every gallon. :) But the more I can squeak, the less impact those stomps have on overall MPGs - it's similar in effect to what NASCAR drivers do to conserve fuel in a race. One less pit stop can make a difference. Same goes for folks on a tight budget. I've tested a different car every week for years now - mostly to produce conventional reviews for the Autobytel channel these days. Occasionally, I have the time/opportunity to do MPG-focused videos for this channel. I highway/MPG tested the Mustang GT and Corvette last year. While the highway numbers were impressive, they were nowhere near 50 MPG. But they could be if the cars had better aerodynamics.

I know this vid is from 2016, however after a LOOOOOOOOOOT of research over the years, we finally decided on a Prius. Low & behold we got of all things a 2016 Prius Four model with just 17,5XX miles on it. qualified as a Toyota Certified Pre-Owned so comes with the 100,000 mile battery & powertrain warranty. ;-) Anywhooooo, it was hard for me to believe all the hype about high fuel mileage numbers. But, WOW, they are TRUE. IN TOWN it is quite easy to break the 70 MPG mark CONSISTANTLY. Now, get it out on the Interstate...………..then it bombs. A "sucky" 43 MPG @ 78 MPH. HA! The last 45 miles of normal daily routine running errands and what not it is kinda stuck in the 58 to 63 MPG range. I will take that! Years of watching your shows has helped me not only be a more miserly driver, you have quite literally saved me money in the end! I want to give you my greatest THANKS for all you have done for folks like us and the You Tube community. This always happens when you reset your tripometer. Especially after filling the tank. I gas up at our local Sam's Club gas station, which is 12.7 miles away. I then take local streets and lone highways home instead of the Interstate, trying to avoid traffic so I can avg 40 MPH. Here's the key: USE CRUISE CONTROL WHENEVER POSSIBLE, all the time if you can. By doing this, you're letting the hybrid system DO ITS BEST. I average anywhere between 70-90 MPG in the 12.7 mile journey home!

Hi! my experience is how to get excellent mpg results from my prius plus is don`t need to be very gentle and crawling on acceleration like a turtle. For the first few metres be gentle with the accelerator use the battery to get the car moving and then use the petrol engine to get to speed while the motor charge the battery then on the speed limit release the accelerator completely so the engine could switch off and then keep your speed only using the battery with gentle acceleration but the next point is important before you need to stop anywhere like plan forward 200 metres and then need to stop example just get off the accelerator an let the car slow then itself because this will charge back your battery quickly and of course if you need to completely stop use your brakes. My Prius plus gets 55mpg on the long term because of motorway miles but in the city computer shows around 60-70 mpg.

I have a 2008 with 310,000 miles on it. West Texas.. all the roads are 45mph.. except downtown. Highways are 60 in the city and 80+ between cities . I tent to surge and coast mostly.. and I tend to max the Regen coming up to lights... But not enough to inconvenience other drivers. I almost always out accelerate other cars at lights.. surge to the speed limit. And coast. I tend to average 45-50mpg. Open highway at 85mph I get 38-40. 75mph I get 42mpg. 55mph I get 55-60mpg. Great cars.. Also keep in mind the engine can run for a variety of reasons. To keep coolant or catalytic converter temp at a set point. Cabin heat if turned on.. sometimes.. can run if you did a lot of Regen down a big hill, to burn of extra power it has no place to put ..

That's fine if it's a long, steep hill and you don't think you can regenerative brake effectively anyway but otherwise no. I drive down a pretty steep hill but it's like at most a 1/4 mile and the best usage is to just ride the brakes and not to exceed approx 25mph. Pick up too much speed and the battery can't charge it fast enough when you get to the point where you need to slow down to a safe speed. Pick a speed that's safe for the road and ride the brakes to maintain that speed.

I have the Prius Two Eco. It is an amazingly fuel efficient car. I "could" get in the 80's if there were no traffic and I could just take my time. I normally get in the low 60's for a normal week. If you drive a ton on the interstate, it will be pulled down into the mid 50's.

What I don't understand is why they aren't ALL plug-in hybrids? Is the charger and slightly larger pack the only difference, and if so, are they really so much more expensive? To me it seems that an un-plug-in hybrid is really only something that manages to get a little more efficiency from gasoline, while a plug-in could potentially destroy your fuel bill entirely - but allow you to travel further if you need to.

Thank you for helping me drive better in my 2015 Prius. Also reminds me of home back east, in fact it is New Jersey, just recognized a few streets! Update, I'm from Princeton, lol how funny is that not changed too much. However I'm not a fan of the 2016 for a few reasons: 1)Less cup holders, 2015 you can fit 8, 2016 only 6 (nitpicking here though) 2)No split glove compartment, loved the top for glasses, sunscreen lotion, etc 3)Toyota no longer offering Solar Panel based cooling with the Sun Roof option 4)Rear looks a bit like a Ford and not in a good way 5)Miss the Star Trek console, shift is now a bit awkward 6)Odd mid console flip, seems like you get less storage space in there. I think I'll keep my 2015 for a while. Though I will say the 2016 it's got a better quality interior and I'm told the new Prius rattles less.

Very good MPG but it is on a very unique terrain, I have averaged on a 65 miles trip with 3 heavy adults in the car and about 50 lbs of cargo on my 2016 C-Max Hybrid and on normal roads with way less coasting down hills averaging between 45 & 55 miles per hour. 3.4 Liters / 100 km into Miles / Gallon (US) Result: 69.180759792574 A 30 miles trip with around 500+ Lbs of passenger and cargo weight in the city of Toronto resulted in : 1.9 Liters / 100 km into Miles / Gallon (US) Result: 123.7971491025 At the end is all how we drive the vehicle, one thing that I love about the C-Max vs the Prius is the power and coasting down hill I do not have to touch the brakes to regenerate power to the batteries, it has a logic grade mode that upon activation will use more of the holding power of the engine to generate more power for the battery and it is also a more quiet ride.

I bet the MPG would be higher if you used minimal EV mode. It is very inefficient to convert gasoline-to-combustion-to generator-to-electricity-to-chemical energy (battery) and then back to electricity-to-motor-to- wheel spin. Direct usage from gasoline to combustion to wheel spin has fewer conversion losses .

I have 1k miles on mine (since I bought it at 13,5k) I am currently running 49.9 mpg in the hills of Austin on the current tank. Trying to at least break 50. But I want to see Prius style MPGs!!! It seems like Lexus removed everything that suggests a MONEY SAVING vehicle. The 5 minute bars top out at 60 MPG but the Instant mpg bar tops out at 90. I can get that display to 90 both below 42 mph (in electric mode - easy) and quite often above 42 mph (by accelerating and coasting with my foot "feathering" the accelerator). But there is no CURRENT bar on the 5 minute display and the MPG on the mini dash display seems to be an average since the last fuel refill rather than the last 10 seconds or current journey as it seems to be on the Prius. Mine is a 2013 Lexus 200h

+TheTunneys My apologies if I misread your post but I'd be interested to know what your mpg is when calculated by hand to compare to your dash readouts. my 2011 Prius typically shows dash readouts that are 3-4mpg higher than real world numbers. I still avg 48-50mpg per tank. Also, although the Prius & 200h share drivetrains, I think they're tuned slightly differently, which results in slightly lower fuel economy for the Lexus. I believe it may also be related to the different tranissions used.
@TheTunneys
@TheTunneys 8 жыл бұрын
+Erik Crossley Yes, 2-3 mpg more reported on the dash than the real measurements of mileage/gallons. Suggest you look at fuelly.com as it will probably answer all your questions. Half way through tank #3 and currently 57.7 mpg - 75% highway 25% urban, lots of traffic, lots of jams, lots of hills and lots of lights but that's Austin for you. 200h is 100lbs heavier and has a worse drag coefficient than the Prius (0.29 vs 0.26) . The 200h has the 1.8L version of the Prius engine but I think it is the less aerodynamic shape and the luxury interior that causes the majority of the mpg reduction. It certainly is as slow to 60 as the Prius (over 10 seconds).
@Trades46
@Trades46 8 жыл бұрын
I would love to see that too. The CT200h seems like a bad car as it is slower & less efficient than the Prius. However drive a longer distance and the improved interior, seats and sound deadening means the Lexus is a much better companion in the long haul. After all, a car is more than just about MPGs, not to mention the CT200h has a better ride & more willing chassis setup over the single eco-minded Prius.

Great job, but still looks to me like you could improve a lot. Note that I have not driven a hybrid (so I guess I easily would drain the battery on the Prius) but I'll share my suggestions. Though, I have driven a Leaf for about 2 years, and regularly hypermile in fossil cars. Have done a number of tests with the Leaf regarding "fuel"consumption. Steady speed used about 30% less "fuel" than changing the speed according to the topografi (slower up, faster down) on my testrun. So, the most efficient with electric cars is steady speed! If that means regen, good, still more efficient, AND you get "fuel" back for later. With ICE, I suppose pulse and glide. So I guess with the hybrid you have to combine those as what engine the car chooses.. So, to the business: *Over the bumpy stuff, keep steady speed with EV. If 15-17 mph over the bump is ok, then keep it at that between the bumps. *Your on the gas, with ICE burning, and then shortly after on the brake. This happens at a few times around crests and crossings/stop-signs. Ease of earlier, shut the ICE of before the crest and glide earlier. I do understand that you have to stop at the stop-sign, and that you will piss people of gliding at 10mph to it, but, there is room for improvement.. *This I'm not sure, but use the B-mode? You say you drag the brakes many times. Maby not a big one, but still, friction at brakes looses energy.. I'm pretty sure your run could be improved with 10%, 100mpg on that run should be possible by the looks of it.
