It would be neat to have it switch to a different charge controller that is hooked up to a heating pad on the batteries. Then the heater wouldn't have to draw of the battery bank

Thanks! So all that extra work is to compensate for the fact the solar controller is hard-wired to cutoff at 0C. This allows setting to a more reasonable temperature (5C) that allows for some safety factor. It's interesting to know that disconnecting a solar controller from the battery can destroy it (when still connected to solar panels). This is good because some batteries have no low temp disconnect.

That's why most charger / inverters rely on BMS to do this where it allows discharging from the batteries below 0C but not charging. That way you don't cut off the batteries from the controller. Then have to make sure BMS is communicating with the controller.

Seems that EPEver software now allows configuration above 0C of low temp cutoff charging parameter. Is the EPEver built in low temp disconnect sufficient to prevent damage to the charge controller while still connected to PV? Or is an external relay system better?

I noticed the epever can provide low temp protection above 0c which is great but for other charge controllers without parameter setting external relay might be the only option. The relay should be on the PV side to not damage the controller.

this is Awesome info. My controller(s) are MPPT but do not have a battery temp sensor at all. It does have a temp sensor dongle that measures ambient built in. Its maybe 2 inches long. I thinkkkkk??? maybe this is only for dialing down the controller output to cool its own components so not to cook itself. It is made to be outside... dust/waterproof thus no fan. It mayyyy also have a cool off setting too.... wont know for a couple weeks cause they have not arrived yet. If it has a fixed cool like yours did. then it is likely designed to have batteries and the controller mounted next to each other.... which I really dont want to do. What you have done may save my bacon. My question to you would be..... I have FIVE 10amp controllers (24v) that I would want to shut down like you did to protect batteries. Got any ideas for me on that?

Hello friend, What type of batterie are you using? Lithium or lead acid? What brand of MPPT CC do you have coming? You could get 1 temp senser to run 5 solid state relays to cut off the solar.

@@Roll2Videos first step will be lead. Controller brand..... Chinesium something. Appears now to be Weicax . Also appears to be formerly made by Ueiua They have now arrived from Ebay. Question ... could I use relay on negative of solar panel into controllers instead for placing relay? This is what is recommended on vehicle battery disconnects is what gave me that idea.. Lead me to thinking if on negative..... then could maybe tie all the controller negative's to a bus bar. Follow that with one larger gauge negative line with relay at that point. From that to another bus bar.... from that bus bar all the negatives separate again back to the controllers. Advantage is this uses one relay on the negative line instead of 5 on the positive. (actually six.... I have a sixth one for on the ground extra power intake. ..though that would not be part of the 5 and have its own relay cut off.

PS- interesting discussion on Will's forum (Diy Solar Power Forum) that say once connected.. generally speaking there is 99-ish% chance that once all is installed... and working.... bms or otherwise. creating a . disconnecion between batteries and charge controller will not damage controller.

I don't see why you can use the negative that way just make sure you size the wire from the bar to the right size. Size your relay property and if you use a solid state relay use a heat sink 👍 Very smart idea you have
