Excellent analysis of a painting I've often seen, but never quite understood its significance. I can imagine these sitters being difficult. Although, it's probably my bias against landed gentry. The painting seems like a 1750 version of Instagram. Look at us, so casually satisfied with our huge tracts of land. However, it's still a lovely painting all the same.

Hahaha yes, very like instagram! These two would be in Dubai right now if they were living in 2021.

I've become interested in this painting recently. Something I've noticed if you look closely at Mrs Andrews: her eyes are looking in different directions. If you observe the painting and focus on her left eye (the right-hand side to the observer) she seems to be looking at the looker, or the house, in the same way as her husband. This provides a united front and supports the class-led analyses of those such as John Berger: these are the landed gentry, and don't forget it. But if you focus on the other eye, it's boring into the back of her husband with that expression of contempt or similar. That is easy to see with a feminist perspective. Class and sex both become relevant and you only have to shift your gaze very slightly. (Although this involves a gestalt shift - you can't do both at once.)

She may look diminutive - but look where her shoes are! I mean just how long are her legs? Eh?
