I like the young dancer in the background, showing us how powerful Mr Bojangles was in his youth...like a ghost or a memory.

At 58yrs old now I remember Sammy Davis Jr doing this song but this version with the serious talent of Ben Vereen and this young man singing this song with perfection.....brings so many tears!!!!!

The only heartstring pulling choreography I have ever watched. Vereen and Fosse were quite the duo. This version is exquisite. I remember Vereen"s version when he was younger in the seventies. Both are timeless and incredible performances.

Fabulous, moving realisation of the memory of youthful grace, strength and flexibility, and the attempt to recapture it. I cried too.

I wanted to die when he said, "I drinks a bit." Magical performance! Put it in a museum!

I saw this on Broadway in 1996 when I was living in the city. That one line, "I drinks a bit," brought tears to my eyes. I wasn't prepared for the impact. You cannot imagine the laughter that came from the audience. I felt like this performance had surely cast its pearls before the swine. Apparently a bus load of tourists from Oklahoma had bought tickets.

That line touched my heart too, what an impact those few words had. That’s truly art. When he came to Bartlesville, Oklahoma to perform I absolutely had to see him. I’ve always loved him on stage, his dancing, his outstanding talent, his expressions that so perfectly communicate his character’s feelings and thoughts. After his beautiful show, my friend and I were walking back to our car behind the theater, when who should we see but Ben Vereen exiting the theater out the back door, which was right beside us. Of course we greeted him and thanked him and told him how much we loved his show, said how inspiring it/he was. Both my mother and I loved Mr. Vereen in his Broadway show’s for years, especially my mother, and when he gave me a little hug and said “Thank you, I’m so glad you came to see me,” I was surprised to find myself tearing up talking with him. I finally got to meet one of my very favorite Broadway stars (at that time I was a theater/musical theater actress too but only in my region). My mother had already passed on at that time but I knew she would have loved to have met him, too.

Then after we left him we got into our car and slowly pulled out of the parking lot into the empty street. Since we were about the last ones to leave the theater, the streets were fairly empty in this small town. It was a dark summer night but solar streetlights lit up the area pretty well. As we drove down the street, I looked to my left and saw a couple of people strolling along the sidewalk, two nice looking men just talking and enjoying the beautiful summer evening, and then I realized it was Ben Vereen and his manager friend….just walking alone in this OK town like it was normal. Lol, no one in town knew there he was, but us. 😄

Why can I not find Ben Vereen's performances of My Bojangles from early in his career? I love this one but you have to see his even earlier performances. Why can I not find them. I LOVE Sammy Davis Jr. too but each is different and LOVED in different ways and cannot be compared. I LOVE them both, They are both GENIUSES.

Gary (BOJANGLES) in the Broadway company of DANCIN'// This piece was named by Bob Fosse--"Recollections of an Old Dancer"--and BEN is not doing Bob's choreography!! I can hardly wait to see what version they decide to do in the new DANCIN' that is supposed to open in NYC in Fall of 2012!! AT LEAST GIVE IT THE NAME THAT "BOB" TITLED IT!!!

@rckymtnhighusa SORRY--but they were NOT into videos when I performed this piece on B'Way in 1978! I don't think there is any way you could see the ORIGINAL piece that BOB FOSSE choreographed on ME---unless you want to see me do it!! Ben's version--while interesting--IS HIS OWN--AND NOT CHOREOGRAPHED BY BOB FOSSE-PERIOD!!
