Wildlife Aid

8 жыл бұрын

Simon was called out to an unexpected office visitor... A fox fell down through a window in the ceiling, leaving smelly gifts all over the place! When Simon arrived, the fox was tucked inside a cupboard, not moving... Simon quickly found out that he was not sleeping; on the contrary, he was quite feisty! After a bit of a struggle to put him into a cage, the fox was released nearby.

Yea I noticed that. Some people can be so scared of anything from the wildlife. People please...he wasn't defusing a bomb. Humans are indeed strange animals.

Sometimes someone who's not completely confident might end up making it worse, plus a lot of rescue professionals prefer not to involve bystanders in case something happens, either to the animal or to the person, which would make the rescuer feel terrible (and possibly get sued-people can be a bit peculiar like that).

joely helms No, it doesn't choke the fox; the grasper is covered in very soft plastic and we only use enough pressure to ensure the animal doesn't slip out. Using a grasper looks a lot worse than it actually is.

Funnily enough, couple of years ago, in London, I noticed a fox sitting in the window of a local bank. I heard people inside running back and forth, people panicking and screaming. I tried to tell the employees to calm down because their running around is scaring the fox and causing it to run back and forth. Worst of all, people kept blocking the exit. Every time the fox tried to make a dash to the exit, someone blocked the way by accident. Poor fox climbed all over desks, chairs, computers, printers etc. The manager of the branch called local RSPCA but they said they don't handle wildlife. I got so upset looking at the fox running around, knocking things over and falling down in panic, that when I saw it hide behind a desk, I took off my jacket, approached it slowly, covered its head with the jacket and then gently but swiftly carried it outside and released it in the back alley. It's sad that people at the bank didn't even notice what's going on, they were either standing outside or locked into rooms, they didn't seem very interested in helping the fox get out. If I hadn't told them the fox is out, they'd probably keep standing outside or stay locked in the room for a while after that :P

Yeah I think I'd have just walked off & bothered to say anything. That or stand there & watch. Good on you to rescue him. I like to think I'd try to help too. Even if I had to catch & put every person into the back. Before slowly chasing him out. Although I might do similar to you if truly needed. I bet he was truly grateful to get out of there away from the crazy people. I can't say too much against them because if he was speeding at me I'd probably shriek too. I did when the cat flipped a long dead mouse at me. But on the other hand recently my cat woke me up sounding like a demon cat. She didn't want to share her mouse with her brother. I'm still not quite sure how but I pried her mouth open & saved it. It seemed unhurt So I put it outside out of the cold wind. Poor little wandering field mouse. Even indoor only cats can be vicious killers. It's a good thing I gave her an entire can of food or she'd still be pissed off at me. Ironically she was raised around my cousin's rescue pet rats.

Sometimes they do that on this channel, trying to catch an animal to release it, instead of just creating an exit route for a trapped animal. Like the episode where he tried to catch a bat with a net instead of just opening the doors. It was just flying around, looking for an exit, but all the doors were closed. After he released it in the yard, it flew all the way across the yard and back into the house through the open doors, then it flew out a second later, just to show everyone it could have done that on its own.

I'm glad you let him go where you did; I've seen many urban foxes and coyotes, and they do very wellin a man-altered environment. We had foxes all over my college campus (and plenty of rabbits and squirrels for them to eat, plus fish in the creeks and all sorts of wildlife in the preserve that was next to the campus) and they used to follow students out of curiosity and occasionally steal their stuff.

Unfortunately no. This was his territory and he knew it well. If we'd have moved him to somewhere we felt was 'safer' he wouldn't have known where to hunt, sleep and escape from threats. There's also a big risk of introducing him to another foxes territory.

@wildlifeaid
@wildlifeaid 8 жыл бұрын
+WWZ inOZ Thank you very much for the donation! At Wildlife Aid we will always do what we can to keep wild animals wild. Desexing a fox (especially a male) will create a hormone imbalance that can not only permanently change the animals behaviour, but will also harm the delicate social structure and hierarchy that urban foxes have. We prefer to keep it as nature intended! :)
@rekkariley652
@rekkariley652 8 жыл бұрын
Foxes are part of the wild. They're supposed to "hurt" wild animals; they help keep the populations of wild prey in balance. As for pets: people need to learn to keep their pets either indoors or under strict supervision if they're out of doors and small enough to be prey for a fox. It isn't the fox's fault if a human practically serves their pet up on a silver platter. Fox has to eat, and an unsupervised cat or small dog wandering around is an easy meal.
@mikeryan6637
@mikeryan6637 8 жыл бұрын
Foxes do not attack pets. More likely the other way round, if you think of the size of many breeds of dogs. In addition, foxes avoid confrontation - it's part of their survival repertoire. Also, the fox lives here, in this country, has a right to exist and breed.
@rekkariley652
@rekkariley652 8 жыл бұрын
Mike Ryan "Foxes do not attack pets." Yes, they do. Not all the time, but it does happen. Animals get in fights all the time over everything from food to territory to mating rights to plain old jealously. That's part of Nature, and Nature doesn't give a shit if one's a wild animal and the other's a pet.
@mikeryan6637
@mikeryan6637 8 жыл бұрын
Rekka Riley Foxes avoid confrontation - that's a major part of their survival repertoire. They are not territorial, have no interest in fighting over anything. By contrast, wild cats are territorial. Scottish wild cats will attack pretty much anything, including people.
