Max Champion was born in 1882 in London’s East End and is thought to have been related to the great Victorian entertainer Harry Champion. As an up-and-coming performer he shared the stage with big stars such as Gus Elen and Vesta Tilley, but his career (much like the Music Hall era itself) was cut short by the First World War, and his songs faded into obscurity. That is, until 2014, when Max Champion sheet music started to surface: first in Malta, then in England, and, intriguingly, in Belgium, where Max probably met his end in the trenches. By 2019, enough songs had been recovered for Joe Jackson to resurrect them with a 12-piece orchestra.

I first heard Joe on the King Biscuit Flower Hour on my tinny little radio when he burst onto the scene. I was rocking out in my room as a 14 year old to Look Sharp! and Is She Really Going Out With Him. I've followed him since on his journey... Night and Day! What a masterpiece. I love the fact that he does what he wants to do. I got tix for Monday night's show here in Seattle and can't wait!

Amazing! I’ve been a fan of JJ since my teens, and he’s always thrown a curved ball at us! Jumpin’ Jive must have been the first curved ball - and it’s a joyous thing. I see something very similar in this - hats off to JJ for paying tribute to music that he loves, rather than re-treading the same old music styles. Now I’ve read more, and realise that Max Champion is a JJ alter-ego makes it even better!
