Mr M: Marius Roberts serves up the 2020 Suzuki Ignis

The Suzuki Ignis was one of those cars which somehow never found its way to my driveway when it was first launched back in 2017.
2020 saw it getting a face lift so I made sure it didn't fall through the cracks a second time round...
Lets see if it lives up to all the hype?

Two points, the raised height makes it far easier to get in and out of, and visibility in town is better. These points are important to some people. I liked the review.

Very valid points Richard and for some people those will be key in the purchasing process...while I can still slip into a 'normal' hatchback, that would always be my preference with the amount of higher speed highway driving we do

I look after people who have trouble getting in and out of vehicles, that ground clearance makes it a very viable proposition for getting them around. Thanks for the look at the spare wheel. Most reviews over look this as a minor thing but I live in a place that if you don't have one the vehicle is not worth buying.

I have taken my Ignis on to some very horrible roads where hatchbacks could not do so, she also saved me during the October floods last year in the East Rand. That ground clearance is definitely worth it.

Like I always say, we are all allowed opinions - just as long as we have one haha. For me its about needs analysis - where are you using the car the most, what is the application - the occasional trip on a gravel road is not a need. So purchase according to that because any car will get you to that wedding venue at the end of a really badly rutted gravel road that you didn't know about. It remains a city car with funky looks that can be marketed as SUV-like...win win

Hello from The Bahamas. It was difficult finding a review in English on this model in the Americas. Thank you for your review of it. PS the raised height is very appealing in the Caribbean due to the consistent road flooding in the rainy season which is half of the year.

Thanks for the message Keva. It certainly does have its benefits but with the ride height, narrow width and thin wheels, there are also negatives, that is why its so important to buy cars based on your specific needs. Its popular here in South Africa too because of our poor road conditions...

Test drove this car a few days ago and thought I would like it but I didn't like the high driving position. It didn't feel planted. Ok I had a ZC32s Swift Sport before so I probably subconsciously compared it to that car. Pity, I really wanted this car but will settle on the Swift GLX or Sport. Great channel Marius. Really enjoying it.

What roads do you guys go and do the B roll on Marius? I would like to do a review of my XFR but I'm new to Gauteng and most of the roads in my experience have potholes and are pretty bad. I need some nice roads with scenic country side to film some nice B roll footage.

Howzit Marius, i am considering buying this because i live in the Transkei, the dead animals on the road is a common occurrence and i think the 180mm might have me clear it. I would have chosen the swift but this is the main concern. My question to you was did you pickup on the twitchy steering ? I dont know if my test unit gad over inflated tyres but i felt i couldn't settle into holding the wheel in one hand. I only got to test a new unit and drove 5km , i need your take please. Again top notch vid, keep it up!!! 👌

Hola, just bought the GLX version here in Spain last week. It comes standard with a leather wrapped steering wheel which I don't see on any of the reviews from SA?...also, was your review car a hybrid? I don't see the distinctive blue hybrid badge on the rear...anyway, great review and I am loving my little Suzuki. I previously owned the 1st gen VW Up! and this definitely to me feels just as good, if not better, so far. Greetings from the Orihuela Costa, Alicante, Spain.

I LOVE Spain and am so sad that with all that's going on in the world, I haven't got back for my annual visit! Love Malaga and then head up into the hills to a town called Gaucin - love it! Our spec levels are very different here in South Africa - Suzuki have focused on a less European spec to ensure they are more price competitive in our market and its working really well for them! So no, no hybrid versions for us - in fact, hybrids are the most expensive models in any manufacturers lineup because our government does not offer any incentives or tax breaks!

Suzuki have really stuck to their strengths which is making affordable compact cars - this is why they are smashing their sales records month after month. The moment they started expanding with cars like the Kizashi or making the SX4 more more upmarket, they didn't sell - its not that there was anything wrong with these products, its just the bizarre South African consumer and how they view / classify manufacturers. When it comes to the S-presso versus Ignis, I would always say go second hand and get into the Ignis or even the Swift - you getting a more substantial car for your money. The S-presso is the currently the cheapest new car in South Africa which makes it compelling when compared with the KWID and the Go but there really isn't too much to choose between all of them.

Not a true reflection. It scores 5 stars. NCAP rated it as 3 starts because it doesn't include active safety as standard. Active safety are things like automatic emergency braking for pedestrians etc. In markets outside of South Africa, active safety is standard or at the very least an option.

Reviewing an entry level compact car and complaining about ride hight LOL and your preference for something more stable and low down. The car scores 5 stars in NCAP when you add the safety pack (which includes emergency braking for pedestrians etc. Probably not an option for 3rd world countries like South Africa). This review is OK but not a real reflection of what value the car actually offers. Sounds like you should stick to reviewing BMW's or Mercedes S-Class to be honest.

Johan, I review cars as they are offered in South Africa not what is available in other markets - that would be the longest, most confusing review. Not sure where you are based, but the Ignis is also manufactured in different plants (Japan or India) based on the market its going to - our models are made in India so its a very different and lower spec'd end product. I've been in the business for 12 years and the whole idea of when review is to have an opinion - and my opinion is that the Ignis would offer a better drive without losing the style points were it sitting closer to the ground like a traditional hatch. This is not just an opinion but just basic physics and its got zero to do with performance or wanting to drive S-classes. The sad reality is that every single car nowadays is being given the raised ride height / SUV like styling treatment because that is apparently what consumers want, and that is the feeling I thought I had made pretty clear.

Suzuki ignis is a pocket rocket most underrated car of Suzuki with peppy engine
