Mr Mxyzpltk is one of my favourite Superman villains because he doesn't want to rule the world or destroy things. He is literally just an interdimensional trickster/Imp that loves to get on Superman's nerves, just an absolute troll with the power to alter reality like a god, and I LOVE IT! If anything, Mr Mxyzptlk personifies how dangerous Clark would be if he didn't use his powers responsibly and wisely, all the power and lack of maturity. I also love how this episode shows Superman is more than people think and knows how to outthink his enemies as well as take them down; he is not just strong but very intelligent, maybe not as smart as someone like Batman or Lex Luthor, but still bright and knows when to use his instincts. Rest in Peace, Gilbert Gottfried famously voiced the character and remains perhaps one of our time's most iconic voice actors and comedic legends. He's the voice of Myxzpltk when I read the comics.

It's kinda telling that Mxyzptlk's obsession with interfering with the third dimension is pretty much compensating for a feeling of inadequacy. He's from a dimension where everyone's unto a god-like being, and yet he's still pretty much at the proverbial bottom of society. Hence him constantly going into the third dimension to outdo that dimension's closest unto a god, that being Superman, just to feel good about himself. Mxyzptlk is ostensibly a bully taking his frustrations on those deemed weaker or lesser than himself, and utterly failing. It's also kind of ironic since at this point in the mainline comics Superman is ostensibly God.

My favorite part of any Mxyzptlk episode is that Superman can not just brute force his way to a victory. Every other time, Superman has to hold back, carefully gauge what his enemy can handle, and hit them JUST that hard, which is already tough enough, but with Mxy, it won't make a difference. The ONLY way to beat him, is to outsmart him. And THAT is what makes him GREAT. Seeing a smart Superman is the highlight of those episodes. It's so easy to make Superman's villains be about who's stronger, like Darkseid, but when Superman has to be SMART, it's a whole new ballgame and I LOVE IT.

Mister Mxyzptlk is in my opinion the best Superman villain after Lex Luthor and Brainiac. Out of all the Superman villains Mr. Mxyzpltk is one of my favorite rogues. He reminds me of the silver age villains or the golden age ones where they are so goofy. Another thing is that the character is a simple yet iconic design. A simple man in a suit and stuff. He is a literal imp that likes to mess around. I feel without him superhero comics will lose their charm. They're supposed to be goofy and I wish we had ridiculous villains like him That's why I love the different takes of Mr. Mixie. He is literally a Dragon Ball villain in My Adventures With Superman, a goofy whimsical character in Super Friends, or even have live action appearances. Even if he is not complicated I feel we need goofy villains in this day and age. Not pure evil monsters or broken tragedies, villains who are fun and whimsical and I love Mr. Mxyzptlk for that.

You know looking at Mxyzptlk's debut comic, coupled with his debut episode in STAS having him first appear in a comic strip, I'm thinking he was inspired by E.C. Segar's Eugene the Jeep from the Thimble Theatre/Popeye comics. We already know Jerry and Joel were heavily inspired by Popeye comics, plus much like Mxyzptlk, Eugene is a bizarre interdimensional creature that gives Popeye a headache much like Mxzie (idk how you'd type a shorthand of his name) does to our blue boy scout. Also funny thing about that episode, on the panels showing the various comic strips with references to other comics, the top one is both hilarious and sweet. Obviously it's based on Calvin and Hobbes and Dennis the Menace, poking fun at writer Paul Dini; however the creator "Bill Wemissu" is a reference to Bill Watterson, creator of Calvin and Hobbes, and his retirement from comics 2 years prior

My favorite Mxy comic is one that happened a few years after the Death of Superman arc got resolved. Mxyzptlk decides that (to my recollection of a comic I read 5+ years ago) he wants to be popular and beloved like Superman is, so he needs to *die* like Superman did to pull it off. No, he does not seem to fully understand what dying actually entails. In order to one-up Superman, he creates his own Doomsday, Badabingbadaboomsday, coated in even more bony protrusions than the original. He's eventually stopped when Lois convinces him that dying would ruin his fun, but the shenanigans he gets up to in the meantime are peak.

I disagree about Mxy being one note. Not only his presence allows Superman stories to embrace the wacky fantasy side of comic books, but also, when written well, he can be a terrifying opponent for Superman, as show in stories like "Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?" and "Superman Reborn". Also, unlike DCAU version, the comic book Mxy wasn't easly defeated in 10 seconds. He was smart and tried to find ways to not prevent Superman from defeating him, forcing Clark to adapt his plans (exemple: There's a story in which Mxy legally changes his name, forcing Clark to try to figure out what his new name is; There's another in which he creates a alarm that warns him whenever he's about to say his name backwards).

0:10: Funny, I actually think the show has enough lighthearted eps, and enough bathos for even the grimmest eps. In a sidenote, I kinda miss the close-up shots come Caped Crusader. 0:29: Can't believe the last comic tale didn't get censored for suggesting *that.* Having a superior backup tale over the mainline one brings into mind the Gotham Knights comics with their Black and White backup tales. 2:34: Wonder if the niece exists in the DCAU? Highly recommend the Watchtower Database rabbit hole video of the guy. Gotta say, Mxy is one Multiversal planeswalker trouble deity done right, even if exploring his entire story can be complicated. Seriously, he has bastard children and has/had a Multiversal conqueror phase! 5:30: Something shared with The Brave and the Bold's good old scrappy Bat-Mite. 7:01: Also the fact that "Mxyzpixilated" is a tough act to follow (not unlike how B: TAS' "Heart of Ice" lost its effect after having the imperfect Sub-Zero movie, the cynical TNBA's "Cold Comfort", and whatever happened in the Elseworlds-ish The Adventures Continue comics). "Little Big Head Man" is a really good follow-up, but not a *great* follow-up... though I'm surprised some of the best Mxy plots in the Superman Adventures comics weren't turned to animated features. 7:13: Hard disagree. Such a Mxy absolutely can't work well to audiences who aren't enamored of non-standalone, Crisis-obsessed long running comic book tales. Believe me, he works better on traditional animation formats, bite-sized or not... I doubly swear, these awesome SA comics should have been animated, not printed. 8:37: Said bully, Brad Wilson of infamous Superman III infamy, also has an important SA comic storyline too in issue 33, about him wanting to reveal Clark Kent as Superman so to get out of drudgery. 8:56: It's Mxy. Of course he'd put a breathable atmosphere on the Moon for Supes. Maybe even supplies and shelter to live on. Gotta love tragic "For Want of a Nail" tales. Also, at issue 26, one of the Kents actually saw Clark with his Superman suit, which inspired Martha to make said suit in the process. 10:01: He also hurt baby Kal-El with his magic, pettily speaking. 10:40: Not a fan of this time travel rule. Same goes for Multiversal Canon Events. Man, that Krypto-centered issue 40 sure was painfully deconstructive, but at least it's one of SA's best stories, and that ending is priceless bathos! Wait, no Justice League Unlimited Adventures appearance where he was responsible for bringing Supes into a DCAU-inaccurate Phantom Zone against General Zod, a somehow still alive Jax-Ur and Mala, and a buncha rogue Kryptonians? Good old Mad Stan, hoo-ah! Addendum: If only Gilbert Gottfried's Mxy interacted with Paul Reubens' Bat-Mite.

Actually there are stories where Mxy gets serious and causes psychological trauma to bystanders. There's the time where he warped reality to be the big boss where only Clark and Lex would be spared just to try and counter him. And the time he appears as twins... Mofo was scary as twins...

He may be one of the more known villains of superman i doubt all the versions of him are the same my adventures with superman for starters mxyzptlk doesn't look like himself in that show so doubt the same part to be honest but nice take on the dude

so by theory if all Mr Mxyzptlk's are the same being, then its kinda crazy to imagine this same version canonically then gave Joker all of his power and created a Reality of Hell and making himself Emperor Joker.

Next to Iago the parrot, Myxie is my favorite Gilbert Gottfried character. I sometimes wonder what would happened if he ever met Mark Hamill's Joker.

8:59 The comic ignores the fact Supergirl is vulnerable to Kryptonite so, no problem ignoring the can't breathe in space or assuming Mxy did something about it.

In fairness to Mxy literally anything he does he can undo as a 5th dimensional being.

i wouldn't say BtAS had lil' room for lightheartedness, it's just when they did do lighthearted stories, they just didn't end up givin' 'em as much critical acclaim (still a-waitin' on that KTLA sam rubin clip)

There are characters in STAS which I lament the sparse usage of - this and Toyman being among them (and on the flipside, some like Volcana suffered for reuse)… But I respect their reasoning to not use Mxy if they could not find a good story for it (granted, the show being cut short didn’t help…)

I didn't know the character went back to the 1940's. Has there ever been a comic in which Superman's magical allies (Dr Fate, Zatana, Specter) took on Mxyzptlk to stop the needling? Your essay is timely as I've wondered whether Mr Mxyzptlk was an inspiration for Beetlejuice?
