It's curious how many people say the color on the Megadrive version is better. As visual designer, what I see is the SNES version has more subtle and smoother color choices, in favour of depth perception and separating background from first term sprites. The MegaDrive has higher contrast due a more limited palette, maybe that's why some people seem to favour it at first glanze, because it causes the effect of being brighter, but I think the SNES version has objectively better color that serves the game better. Like how in the third part of the first stage the MegaDrive version blends the background using the same green, while the SNES creates depth using colder variations for the background to bring it back. At 16:53 for example is easy to see the background gradient is way soother on the SNES, and the tree has volume, while there's a lot of visual noise in the Megadrive version and the tree looks flat. At 43:33 well, do I have to comment anything? I like some of the MegaDrive version color choices better, like the Kitchen background, but the SNES has better visual design and use of color overall. Both versions are great, a really nice oldschool platformer to enjoy in both consoles, anyways, just wanted to comment something that seems curious to me.

If you are a "visual designer" you fail to see the difference in contrast between the two games, specially on tilesets. Besides, Sega Genesis have a much clearer approuch and the color schemes matches the cartoony style they are looking for with this game - the best example being the second part of first stage, hue variations are much more present on the Genesis. Even on the volcano stage you showed up, despite the less detail in the background (which is pretty bad), the tileset is still much, much better than the washed out approuch in SNES. Just look how flat the brown rocks are. By the way: no, there's no such a thing as "objectively better" in art. I think you have to be a bit more humble on this subject.

Some parts are better on Mega Drive, it's alot of subjective art design but the map screen and Witch's house looks better.

Sega fanboys won't and never admits anything. They legit thinks that Megadrive/Genesis looks better than everything. It's absolutely mindblowing by how far they will grasping after straws that so their beloved SEGA will win for every times.. 3:34, 54:25, 1:17:25 shows how severely limited the color palette on Megadrive/Genesis were. Well all of you can continue with living in your own little world. I don't even dare to imagine how bad Chrono Trigger, FF6, Yoshi Island, Rendering R2, Seiken Densetsu 3 and many more has looked at Megadrive/Genesis.

It is one of the Snes games that displays 256 colors at the same time and it looks visually stunning. The Genesis could only display 64 colors at the same time with a limited choice (only 512 colors in total). That accounts for the missing elements and starker/brighter contrasts. Everything looks more subtle and well balanced on the Snes. They did a good job given that limitation on the Genesis but it's clearly no match for the Snes.

Actually the Mega Drive could display 192 colours, many games go far beyond 64 colours like Vector Man.

There are certain things that I admit I like more in Genesis, like the coloring in certain sections, some better detailed backgrounds, the resolution and password system. However, my favorite version is the SNES, I consider it much superior due to several factors: larger sprites, texts between levels and the invincibility power up, mode 7 of scaling in the introduction of levels and clown boss, a much deeper and more endearing music, and even the polished of characters looks a lot better on SNES even though in Genesis the resolution and colors looks fantastic. All the magic of this game is undoubtedly on the SNES, however, the Genesis version is a very good option too. And by the way, I hate how many people discredit these versions for not being exactly like the Amiga version, in fact, they don´t know that the Amiga version is basically Hoppin Mad, the sequel that also came out as a finished proto version for Sega Genesis. By the way, my favorite of all the versions is the SNES version, a shame that the GBA version, which also has a few benefits such as quite nice lighting effects, has so many bugs. Actually I have two Wii Virtual Console injects of the SNES and Genesis versions, both with NTSC patch for a better speed, an obviously, I don´t need password system with the autosave system working. Sorry for my english.

Mega Drive has better colour and sprite definition, but, the sound effects and music on the SNES version are far, far superior and that makes it more enjoyable to me...the tunes on the Mega Drive version are a lot shorter, with entire chunks missing from them...it's very noticeable to someone like me who's played through both versions. It's annoying that the SNES version doesn't have passwords and you have to play through it all in one sitting though.

Huh, i thought the graphics were definitely much better on the SNES, but i've played both games and the megadrive version has slightly smoother controls. Music is better on the SNES but I think the megadrive music is cool in its own way

This is the kind of the game that should be better on SNES in pretty much every way, other than horizontal view size (although this game doesn't actually have more horizontal resolution on Genesis, so there's basically nothing that should be better than on SNES in this instance), and every time a game like this isn't clearly better on SNES (certainly better looking at least) then I think it's a result of the developer not fully taking advantage of the system and little more. Thankfully, in this case there's many examples where you can clearly see the SNES version at least looks better, which, along with more colours in basically every scene (although sometimes not necessarily better choices of those colours imo), is mostly obvious in some of the later levels with things like proper transparency and additional parallax, along with little elements of presentation like the way the game zooms in the map, colour gradients in many of the far backgrounds, spotlight fades ins/outs at some points, info text bubbles with transparency, bosses that use Mode 7 scaling, an extended ending, and such.

Talking about resolution, there is a Genesis ROM hack by Di Somma Michele that makes it possible to turn the game into high resolution mode. Interestingly, that feature that was actually coded in the original game, but with no way to enable it.

@@zabustifu It creates several oddities, especially in single screen instances and bosses (very notorious in the witch and clown ones, the screen makes sudden movements to adjust to your position and you can see boundaries you shouldn't), and also completely break the ending demos (up to the point that they can even freeze the game), but it's a nice option of experimenting the game still, especially in the regular levels where it works best.

The colours are better on the Genesis and more accurate as well also the backgrounds have more detail. Though this is most likely due to the Genesis version being released a year later so the devs probably used that time to optimise for the Genesis.

Definition seems better on Genesis because a lack of colors. On SNES, the graphics are more detailed with more colors. SNES version was the first. Genesis version is only a port.

many passages are better colored on megadrive in particular on the 1st third of the game with better decorations for example level in the trees, but others are better on super nintendo, for example the passage of the volcano or the passage with the arc in the sky in the clouds, there are also sometimes on snes in the last levels an additional background or beautiful color gradients... for the music both versions offer a good experience the snes has a slight advantage but not on all themes, the boss witch and the clown are nicer on megadrive I think, more successful decor, mode 7 or the zooms are not interesting and does not add much except a slurry of pixels. the strong point of the megadrive is clearly the passwords which is a significant asset. I also have a preference for the mgadrive version regarding the arrangement of information on the screen during the game. I think that despite some small concessions in certain places the final version is the megadrive version. I love both versions

Je suis stupéfait par les fanboy Genesis qui pensent voir des graphismes plus détaillés...un dégradé de couleurs avec 3 nuances...c'est moins qu'un dégradé avec 6 nuances... il manque systématiquement un plan sur la Genesis, il y a 2 à 3 fois moins de couleurs. Elles ne sont pas forcément mal choisis, c'est juste que la palette de la Genesis ne peut pas suivre. la musique est abominable sur Genesis...bref, une mauvaise foie sans limite!!! j'ai eu les 2 machines, que j'ai adoré tout autant l'une que l'autre, mais quand j'ai eu la Snes, j'ai vraiment eu l'impression de passer à une génération légèrement supérieur. C'est un constat...pas un avis aveuglé.

Moi j'avais ce jeu sur megadrive, je l'ai renié sur la snes à l'époque à cause qu'il y'avait pas les mots de passe, quand je l'ai refais la version snes sur emulateur j'ai vu la différence flagrante qui est nettement supérieur, graphisme plus pastel, plus de detail en arrière plan, et les musiques surtout, y'a juste bizarrement le niveau clouds j'ai une petite préférence pour la version MD 😅
