It is a remarkable piece of television history. I think it’s small but loyal following will help it to become a cult classic, and in ten years or so, there will be Mr Robot-con events. S4E7 is one of the single best episodes in the history of television. For me personally, I have never had such an emotional and visceral reaction, to fiction on a screen. Not gonna lie, it fucked me up. I was a wreck after watching it, wanting to vomit, and literally started crying days later, just thinking about it. I think its very modest viewer base, has to do with the subject matter, which involves a lot of things that people don’t like to think or talk about. I don’t know if I can go back and watch S4E7 again, not any time soon at the very least.

An astonishing look in the post-modern human condition. I see MR ROBOT as a work about loneliness, isolation, and about the extreme alienation that we, in the overall capitalist society, suffer nowadays - not only from one-another, but even from ourselves. This one is my favorite series.

Reminds me of how Ismail says he thinks plot doesn't matter, it's about tone. In other words, if you take time to connect the audience to human vulnerability and intention, the themes land, and that strikes the audience in the heart far more than fancy plotting.

Depression is just a response to Albert's Camus "Absurd" Void... Depressed people are typically "intellectuals", but intellectuals are not typically depressed.' I don't relate to Elliot at all, I've never experienced anxiety or depression, I'm a confident optimistic extrovert, basically the complete opposite. However I think it's because he's so different from me that I find him compelling, I know people who struggle with the same issues, so it helps me to understand them better.

Anxiety consumes you up slowly. It redlines your whole mind and body all the time until the point you get so exhausted you just pass out. And when you got some sleep and try to recover, you can literally feel it building up again inside you. You start to pick up bad habits that are self destructive, because only the small shots of happiness remains when you are scared of your own future and cant plan ahead for more than a day. Because you know it will build up again tomorrow. And after that. And after that. Naturally the depression sets in, since you feel hopeless. In the meantime your friends and family is desperately trying to help you by saying all the wrong things. That you should try doing some sports and yoga, and eat more vegetables. And you sit there with a heartrate of 140, your vision is closing in because you need to escape, to run home and cry the pointless tears of anxiety. If you live like that, reach out for professional help, let go of the wheel and do the things they tell you to do. At first it wont help, but that doesnt matter, if your life is pure misery you have nothing to lose. Reach out for help and get better. It might take time and a lot of work, but its possible. I did it and it was the best decision of my life. Fuck, im actually happy again.

I'll be honest and say that Elliot is one of the first characters I totally empathize with and understand his position. With clinical depression and anxiety myself. It was almost a little too authentic and genuine for me to appreciate because I realized that's how I must look to the outside world. Where Mr. Robot fails for me, is the story involved. Honestly I wish it would have simply kept with the relevant destruction of our society. Rather be a hacker taking down a dystopian government yaddah yaddah. I was much happier to see a genuine understanding of the world through someone like myself eyes. And beyond that, one of my favorite quotes from Elliot was "I hack people to understand them" or something along those lines. And I am a writer. I make and write characters to understand people. Writing is to his hacking. And I was like, thank you. Finally a show that understands.
@harshpherwani6590

the story is relevant too, why? because in today's world almost everything works on a computer, there are computers everywhere around you and unimaginable amount of data is traveling to-fro in the world, we all depend on that very technology as it surrounds us, it has a huge impact on our lives
@OneEyedCloud01

The point is that the destruction of society is directly connected to our culture and government. That's why it escalates, getting to the root of those in 'control'.

I suffer from social anxiety too, so that's probably why I'm attracted to this show so much. It really captured the feeling of what it's like to simultaneously be disconnected from society and at the same time despising the same society you want to be a part of. It's a shame that season 2 became more focused on Elliot's hallucinations and half-baked plot twists than showing what mental disorders and human emotions are like. Great video as always.
@brandonb.5304
@brandonb.5304 7 жыл бұрын
Those "half-baked" plot twists were entirely about Elliot's mind working with and against itself to manage its mental illness. It wasn't about the twist; it was about how Elliot's psyche was dealing with itself and its propensity to self-harm. Elliot's brain created a literal lock down to try to manage and control the damage it was doing. However, Elliot came to realize that self-treatment doesn't work. Esmail created the visual environment of Elliot's mind and how it was dealing with delusions. I didn't find season 2 to be half-baked or superficial at all. If anything, it provided the needed context and examination of Elliot's deteriorating mental state.

It is so weird to see this, (again) now. I stumbled on Ryan's channel & noticed all of the "Hoyever" comments. It was his breakdown of "Sinister" that made me fall in love with the channel though, bc horror terrifies me, and Ryan absolutely deconstructed my fears in 10 minutes. I loved this show. 4x7 needed a trigger warning and I hated the ending. But, damn. One of my new favorite KZbinrs addressed one of my favorite shows back before everyone was doing it. Amazing.

I came to this show because it had realistic hacking methods. I always wanted a show that did this, not how fast you can type to get into IP addresses. I came out of the show, undoubtedly happy that the show relates with me. The show relates to me with Mental illness and a dark and cynical view of the world. As much as I love this show, every person who have watched Mr Robot in my friend group has depression. I'm not saying this as a bad thing, Mr Robot is just very relatable to people with Depression and Social Anxiety. You earned a sub from me Ryan, the 28 days Later review was 10/10

I've never watched the show but now I think I might. Your description of how Elliot feels and is, the way he acts and thinks and reacts, it all reminds me of my way on life. How I get infuriated by the idea of having to work in something I don't want, waste 1/3 of my day, just to live in a society I never asked to be born in. The loneliness that you end up achieving when you can't accept the enviroment you live in is trully painful and most people never understand. Thanks for showing me more of myself than I ever achieved to know in the past 24 years.

While Elliot is disgusted that society will seemingly do anything to ignore the ugliness of reality, he himself has carefully constructed an alternate reality in order to ignore the ugliness in his life. While Elliot is disgusted how Evil Corp is exploiting the weaknesses of consumers, he himself exploits the weaknesses he finds in others, through hacking them. THIS is the crux of the show. Our mentally ill hero, is a total hypocrite. A couple of times during the show, other characters call him out on it. His response is sort of a, “yeah....BUT....” S4E7.....was the best episode of television history for me. I feel like that episode alone, could be an entire movie or a play. The writing is that good.

Mr Robot and Neon Genesis Evangelion are the two most accurate portrayals of depression and social anxiety I have ever seen. I know Evangelion is a silly cartoon to most people. However, those who have experienced such mental illness will recognize it when it's properly shown in fictional stories. Same goes for the hacking in Mr Robot. Just like its portrayal of mental illness, it shows hacking done in an extremely realistic way.

I literally wrote a paper on this topic of misportrayall of the mentally ill yesterday! We aren't these "things" that need to be made fun of, or used for shock value! We're people, and it's been nice if the world kinda stopped thinking of us like these freaky monsters.

I just realized Elliot is Neo, but in a more realistic and detailed day to day depiction.

I loved this show more than I've loved any other show in a really long time. I only finished it recently and I want to watch it again. It has that quality where it rattles around there in the back of your head, I love when a story makes you think. Also, are you from Northern Ireland? Small little twangs here and there sound familiar 😊

Sam Esmail is an absolute genius and Rami Malek is the only one who could play Elliot. A total new way of looking at tv.
