You mentioned "account lock-out" being a reason that the brute force method Elliot is using wouldnt work. But its also possible that he could have obtained the hash of the actual password and is then just brute forcing offline until he finds a matching hash, right? Although, idk how he would have gotten the hash in the first place? So yeah idk. lol

He is connected to actual website if you pay attention to the terminal,so that's why i mentioned the "account lock-out" thing.

To add. Assuming he had the hashes, perhaps stolen by himself or another hacker, it would be computationally expensive to find all of the hash collisions because most modern passwords are, or at least should be, "salted". Instead, using a tool such as John the Ripper, or the show equivalent as shown in the clip, to basically brute force the password with a wordlist is a far easier attack that is more realistic especially if an attacker can narrow the list using osint (open source intelligence) like Elliot does in the show when he looks at their social media profiles. Part of me wanted to see him find one of the passwords in a compromised set of passwords since password reuse was/is a pretty hot issue. I think that could have been a pretty cool teaching moment for the viewers.
