I'm 72 and so many of those features I recognise from my childhood. @05:17. I had a fireplace identical to that in my bedroom! I can remember my grandmother used a flat-iron all her life until her death in 1972. She didn't trust electric irons, feeling they were not safe. I love the furniture. It had soul and warmth, unlike the cold sterile designs and materials today.

A tour around a vanished world. I particularly like the motivational slogans on one of the posters: “time is money,” “observe,” and “order, promptitude and perseverance.” And I had forgotten other lost details like a bottle of red Quink. Fina and I have really enjoyed watching this video.

This looks like my Grandads house, which I used to visit as a child, it was like stepping back in time, outside toilet, mangle in the kitchen, tin bath on the back of the kitchen door, old radio, even in the late 80s, his house hadn’t changed, just like a museum 😂

We have never been but it really does look fascinating. I do hope that the Straws were happy with their lives and that they did not feel trapped in the 1920`s due to any traumatic events. We all keep far too many things around us and it can be difficult to let go of them. It is great for us today to be able to look back through this window to another era but I feel sorry for the family who seem to have got stuck somehow. The National Trust has so much to show us. Hi Ivor and Robert yes it is unusual to hold on to the past although we like to think that they were just very careful and looked after their things. My grandparents were very similar mending things rather than replacing items. I think also as we get older there is a comfort in maintaining the things around us that hold our memories. Hi Dave and Dawn. Oh how I wish this was closer to me. I'm currently doing a project with the kids on the Edwardian era, and with having Florence's parlour...my Florrie would love that. This house reminds me so much of my father's house when I was a child. He still lived in his parent's house and hadn't touched it so it was very similar to this, but on a much smaller scale. Thank you so much Stacey. Yes you would love it here there is such a lot to see. The carpet in the hall has Egyptian pattern and was very expensive at the time so it only goes up the stairs as far as you can see from the door. The staff said that Egyptian things were very popular at the time as Tutankhamens tomb had just been discovered. The house is full of fascinating objects like the bed warmers and the beautiful bedspreads. It's definitely a treasure and good that it's history is recent enough that we can remember it. @@inbetween-days to be frank.. this reminds me very much of some of the decor of homes in Brighton in the 70s.. In the midlands.. even council homes that tenants had bought were similarly decorated. Things have moved on now but it is wonderful that the NT has preserved these homes for future generations.

it made me think about my house growing up. We lived in an old Victorian house but some of the features are similar. Multicoloured glass on the door and the old fireplaces. 😊 only thing missing is an old coal cellar as well.

Hi guys yes we loved it here so many memories of our recent past. The carpet with the Egyptian pattern was lovely and very expensive in the day so it only goes up the stairs as far as you can see from the front door. Egypt was very popular at the time as they had just discovered tutankhamens tomb. It's fascinating to look around you get a real sense of stepping back in time.
