I have the 5.2 V8 Magnum 98 with a 5 speed . It's actually my welding truck . It carries about 1500 lbs in the bed at all times and it keeps moving along . 160xxx on it . Great trucks. No major problem s I've had it for 6 or 7 years now .

Just purchased my 1998 1500 Laramie in January for $8500 with 45,000 miles on the clock. Mine has the 360 and the off road option, 2" lift, Trans cooler, skid pads, and tow package. The interior is about factory perfect, it also has a camper shell painted to match in Viper red and the box is bed lined, color matched! I think I got a good deal! No rust and factory Infinity stereo is quite good...

2001 Sport current owner. I have 334248 miles on my truck. Bought the truck with 72K on it. I have had a stock rack and a Brahma Bull in the bed. I fabricate 3 cm Natural Stone countertops have had those in the bed. Hauled two pallets of flagstone which exceeded my haul by 1500 lbs at least! Oh I have romped my truck with a frew brew on back roads. And never to this day have I ever engaged the 4X4! The 5.9 360 Magnum V-8 all the way! My truck keeps everyone honest on the road around me when I drive. People do not pull out in front of me, people will slow and stop at a red light and wait for me to pull through. Yeah this is one amazing TRUCK!!

@@MrTruckTV we have a 1996 extended cab without the rear door(s) (I don't know if they were on both sides on the 2001.) with the 6.5' box with the 360. It has 251,500+ miles on the original engine, but it's on it's 4th transmission. It was on it's second transmission when we got it. The engine holds over 40 lbs of oil pressure still and doesn't burn any oil. Those transmissions and 4wd levers being vacuum operated to the front axle are it's weak points for sure. Lots of rust with those thin bodies and being in Illinois and Wisconsin a good bit of it's life too. It fits 33x12.5R-15's pretty easily. It has aftermarket aluminum alloy wheels, factory was 16" wheels. We have Federal Couragia MT's on ours. My dad and I always said the second generation reminded us of the ugly 1970's and 1980's Mercedes-Benz cars like Tommy's. Lol! We didn't like them very much, but it was the only thing affordable at the time at $1500.00.

Since the trans had an aftermarket cooler you could probably just adjust the bands up and be good. Dodge factory trans cooling was really the biggest issue causing the trans to fail.
@kunu98
@kunu98 3 жыл бұрын
They’re reliable, sturdy and easy to fit. Use OEM sensors, baby the auto trans and it’ll be happy. Dash cracks but you can get a dash cover. They’re cheap and get the job done. Gas milage sucks but it’s a v8, interior is comfy. Swap out radio n speakers n it’ll be a nice ride. Heatercore usually fails but if dash is destroyed, it’s easy to swap out. Find one with minimum rust, not worth repairing if the rust taken over.

@@wildbill23c That sounds like a real nice truck, 680k is pretty insane. Shows the reliability of the truck with good solid maintenance. The amount of money you've probably spent on maintenance and gas probably pales in comparison to 3 similarly equipped brand new F250's each reaching 220K miles

I bought my 01 ram sport quad cab new still own it and still looks pretty close to new. Original black exterior with tan interior. No faded crap paint not rotted or rusted not garage kept never seen a car wash in 23yrs. Hand washed only. Absolutely love that body design. Not really a big fan at all of New body design. Gen 1 and 2 I think were the best design. I hope to keep keep this for another 23 years as long as parts are available and someday it actually might develop rust it will get a totally new paint job. Doubt very much there is a 01 black not garage kept that pretty much looks great as day one. Hell it still has the original factory carpet floor mats which still look like new.

One thing I like about the older truck one you could get a manual transmission but a lot of people have the problems with the dashboard also but one thing I don't like about the new trucks push button 4 wheel drive I rather have shifter on the floor this way nothing could go wrong if you were four-wheeling somewhere but living on Long Island never have a chance anymore to take my trucks off road. I always purchase trucks with the extra tow package and transmission cooler even though I've never told a trailer but it's useless to buy a truck in 2 wheel drive the only time I get to use four-wheel is when it snows

I probably get someone wanting to buy it every few months because how great it runs purchase it used in 04 I purchased a new 04 Ram Hemi in 03 and I seen the 01 diesel I had to have them both. Looking to maybe sell both trucks or also my 2014 Ram sport hemi just have too many vehicles looking at the new Ram trunks just love how they are made.

1:38 What happened here? Chrysler, Chrysler is what happened. Somewhere around 1990 they changed the paint process. Almost all manufacturers had to because of new EPA rules. Some figured out how to get it right faster than others. Chrysler took the longest, their clear coating and painting process was abysmal through the 2000's. At least it isn't as bad as the first generation Neons. They could lose anything from dime sized chips to most of a pannel just by driving through a carwash.

Now is the time to buy them. They are pretty cheap now. The value of them will only continue to climb as time goes by. They are cheaper to maintain and repair too. When my 3rd gen Ram died, i went out and specifically went back to the 2nd generation model. Its just a much better truck, in practically every way possible. I hope you find one.

@@blueduck9409 What trim level do you own/recommend? I was thinking of getting a SLT Laramie 2nd gen, but I heard the alarm systems can go wonky as they age. Ours was a base model, had manual locks, so we didn't have to worry about that.

@@oreoscadoosh3360 I have a 3/4 ton dodge ram, its a 2001 SLT Laramie 4x4. It also has a 4 inch lift. It has the 5.9 liter V8 gasoline engine. Currently i have the BFG K02 all terrain tires in 285 75R 16. I found it at a used car lot in Lakewood Colorado. The asking price was $6,000. The breaks were shot, the steering had about 4 inches of play in it, and the transfer case seals were leaking, but only had about 100,000 miles on it. The body and interior is in great shape. The engine, transmission, and drive train are in excellent mechanical shape. I had to spend a little bit of money fixing it up, but got it restored. I had to replace every part of the steering mechanism. I put Moog brand parts in it, and, surprisingly, they were not as expensive as i thought it would be. I really enjoy this truck, and i drive it around town every time i go somewhere locally. It is fantastic in mud, snow, ice, dirt, pavement. Im keeping this one and will not be getting another truck unless this one is destroyed. It is so much better than the 2003 ram i had, or even the 2010 model a relative of mine had. My 2001 ram has electric locks and windows, manual 4x4 shifter, and very few sensors that trigger that pesky check engine light. I love this truck.

I’ve had my 2001 1500 360 v8 Sport for about 10 years and it has about 210k on the clock. No issues with it at all (other and wear and tear) until this year when I lost park and 2nd gear and required a trans rebuild. A fresh trans woke it back up and I plan on keeping it for another 100k if possible.

My former neighbor had a 2500 Ram 4x4 truck with the 360 engine. In 98k miles, three transmissions, one transfer case replacement, two fuel pumps, two complete exhaust systems, dash broke at 71k miles and the frame cracked in two places at 68k miles, and fuel gauge failed twice. Only towing it ever did was towing a 16' aluminum boat once in awhile. At 98k miles, the rust was so bad, he got rid of it and bought a Ford F250 4x4 Super Duty. It currently has 161k miles and doing just fine without any problems.

ORE provided 2" lift, red shocks, gusseted front diff, skid plates, tow hooks, 4.10 gears, and special badging. Produced 2000-01 only. Ram hubs are always engaged. The vacuum actuator connects the stub shaft via a collar midway on the axle. Everything else is pretty accurate.

As good as these trucks looked, they were piles. The only good thing about this generation of trucks was the cummins in the 2500 and 3500's. These trucks also had glass transmissions, front ends would chew through parts in 50k miles, and had really bad rust problems

A 1998 1500 2wd LB with a 360 and a RE46 transmission saved my life, last January an idiot driving under the influence plowed in to me head-on at over 70 mph as I was coming to a stop to make a left turn; I was doing maybe 10 mph, the air bags deployed for me and the seat belt worked as well; the other died... he was driving a Toyota Corolla. That Dodge was my favorite ride and she had a lot of miles left on the clock, so if you have a chance to buy a 2nd generation Dodge Ram, DO IT! As for my new favorite, a 2021 Toyota Tundra

I think Ill keep my old beater ram a while longer. I cant seem to justify buying a 50 or 60k truck when I know itll be well used and abused. Far less cost of fixing it than a new one. Its also better having the 8ft bed. Hard to find a 8ft bed on anything these days period. Mpgs are awful but still everything I've ever had to fix has been pretty trivial to far.
