"Duct tape" is a neologism. It WAS originally "duck tape," so-called because when applied properly, it was moderately water-proof. Water slid off like a duck. Duck tape. It was originally a military-grade tape. When it moved to the civilian market, people couldn't BELIEVE it was called "duck tape," so they came up with the "duct tape" name (which actually made little since, as it was just okay at best on metal). Eventually, as in the last 20 years or so, people HAVE created genuine "duct tape," that works much better on metal, and are much more likely to call the original "duck tape."

1:08 - *“I used to call duct tape ‘duck’ tape, as a kid. Like 🦆; that kinda duck.”* That's what it was originally called. It took its name from the strengthening fabric that makes part of its construction, namely duck cloth, a.k.a. cotton duck. Apparently some people didn't know this and simply wouldn't believe that this was its real name. "Why would you call it 'duck' tape? That sounds silly! It must be 'duct' tape; yeah, that sounds more sensible." And somehow that stuck - despite the fact that "duct" tape is _terrible_ for using on ducts! Mabel is a very impopular character in the show. She has as many haters as she has fans and for most of it I think that hate is justified, EVEN if she is a 12 yeats old, but that's a whole 'nother can of worms. Except for this episode lol. Many people get mad at Mabel in this episode and call her selfish because she wasn't able to let go of a pig she met that day and was depressed about it instead of being happy for her brother's business with Wendy, and she definitely doesn't deserve such hate. This episode boils down to: Mabel won a pig, fair and square, while Dipper wanted to manipulate time just so he could enhance his chances with Wendy. It was obvious from the start who was the twin that had to let go what they wanted (aka, the one that didn't earn it fairly) Sure, making Mabel be depressed for at least 1 month and a week over losing an animal she only met that day may be overkill tbf. But still, she did earn her right to be the one that keeps what she wanted.

There are later episodes where that argument has a little bit of ground, but I'll never understand it for this one. Mabel won Waddles fair and square the first time round. Dipper had to mess with time-travel multiple times and still only got what he wanted by having Mabel sacrifice her shot at getting Waddles, after which he won't even return the favour? And even if he HAD succeeded at the ball toss game he still most likely wouldn't have had a shot romantically with Wendy. I can understand that perspective for, say, Sock Opera, but not this one

If Dipper got his way, he'd still not get Wendy, Robbie would be even more pissed at him, Waddles would be abused or eaten by the Northwests, & Mabel would be depressed. There's literally no upside. Plus all Mabel did was be depressed. I once saw a commenter try to argue that Mabel was just going to the pillar to bang her head on it whenever Dipper comes around because he said the times out loud & she wanted to manipulate him into letting her have Waddles. Even though vines were growing around her feet & Soos was leading a tour to see Mabel because she'd basically become a landmark. Any excuse to hate a 12-year-old girl.

I still call it duck tape. some duct tape company called it duck tape and I was like "huh I guess it is duck."

From the intro, I’m putting, “Alicia only knows about Oregon Trail the video game” on my bingo card

There is actually a brand of waterproof duct tape called “Duck Tape”, because water slides off it “Like a Duck’s Back!”

So, what's genius about this episode is that if you go back to the episodes before, you can actually see blendin in the background

I'm certain that positively everyone pronounces it "duck tape". No one's gonna go out of their way to pronounce that extra t, just to follow it up with another t

To answer your question early on. I did call it duck tape for a very long time because the brand we got had a duck logo on it. So either way to me it was duck tape.

I still call duct tape "duck tape" because it just roles off the tongue better, and no one notices because the "t" in tape basically does the work of two.

I feel like Diper and Mabel would both be happy if she got Waddles at an earlier point and went to the gutter to help Dipper. Unless a Time Paradox prevents that or something. Would that have worked?

Maybe the guy shouting about the weight-guessing contest was supposed to imply that he just opened the contest so going in earlier wasn't an option? I don't know.

1:15 there was a duct tape brand with a duck logo so i thought it was duck tape too 😂

More than a reference, it's pretty much confirmed that Gravity Falls and Rick & Morty share the same multiverse. Watch closely for the episodes that involve portals.

I watched the Red Green Show with my dad, he let it slide that i kept calling it Duck Tape.

Mabel, Alicia and let me just chYep pretty much everyone to Waddles: "I only known you for a few minutes but if anything were to happen to you I'd murder everyone here and then myself"

I mean Mable did had multiple times to spend time with Waddles to make a bond.

Yeah I called it duck tape too. I think that was the name of the tape brand, so that only served to confuse my young brain more.

idk man, I think is kinda sad that Pacifica actually tried to get a pig but Waddles wouldn't even go with her. Poor girl actually made an effort to get pet as a friend and even it didn't want to be around her.

6:09 ice again 8:25 disagree slightly with everything except kid lol Dipps not gonna pick up on those, or thinks she'll potentially see him differently 9:05 ghh 9:34 ahh I get the feeling but also Dipper isn't going to think that so it's triple aaaa 17:06 making sure that she h-- haven't they been separate up until this moment 😅 (By Trembly!)
