Hurts my heart that the swing rebirth came in the 90s and didn't wait for me to be fully grown to enjoy it. Used to go to swing clubs my sister was working in here in Dallas -- they'd let me in, age 16, 17, 18, 19 -- club was 21+ -- if I promised not to drink. Then I got in college, took a swing class as my elective -- and it was pretty much over. And I was SOOO in denial. :-( So I can swing -- nowhere to swing, though. Have all these CDs somewhere. :-(

+DreamGyrl360 In LA, I often have to choose between 3 different venues with great live bands on the same night, Camp Hollywood still has 1200+ in attendance each year. I missed the 90's craziness as well, but there are still lots of active swing communities. If you don't have one, start one.

Providence and Boston have a number of Swing groups, a good mix of young and old who love to Swing. THere are also a number of good Swing bands that play the area. Big Bad Voodoo Daddy is awesome! Some of our friends travel to New York, Florida, all over to compete in Swing Contest. If you really love it and there are no groups in your area, then start one up yourself. Find a place that will let you hold dances (non alcoholic) and invite dance groups, college groups etc.... to come. Also, find a Swing teacher who would be willing to offer half or an hour dance lesson before the dance starts to teach the basic steps, "Back rock", "Swing out" etc..... Hire a Swing Band or find a good DJ who will play good Swing Dance Music. Charge about a $15 admission to the dance. A lot of young people still love the music and once turned on will want more. Brown University in Providence has a Swing Dance Club. The club hires a couple of dance teachers to come in once a week and give lessons. They also make the lessons available to the public. They hold two big public dances a year. Make your group publicly known by doing dance exhibitions at Fairs, parades, etc... This will get more people who want to dance interested. We had monthly dances in a church hall with a man who loved swing and did his own DJ work. He also got a good dance teacher to come give lessons on Wednesday nights for an 8 week session. It ran for a number of years and developed many great dancers who go to a lot of the dances hosted on by other groups who have done the same. Unfortunately, he got old and health issues prevented him from continuing, but many of us continue to support other groups that still hold dances. I encourage you to keep it alive. Sharing your passion with others is the best way to inspire participation!

looked up the lyrics... He's got great big feet, he's jumping to the beat He's been dancing in the street He's dressed so fine, got lots of loot We like to call him Mr. Zoot Suit He drives a great big car, smokes a big cigar He looks like a king, and he acts like a star When we see him drive by he goes "Toot, toot" We all shout, "Hey, Mr. Zoot Suit" He's got purple suspenders and a yellow tie (say what?) Come on boys, I tell you no lie Those hats, those funky spats He is the hippest hip and the coolest cat I tell you no lie, this guy can't be beat Wherever he goes he turns up the heat So when you see him drive by with that big cheroot Don't forget to shout "Hey, Mr. Zoot Suit" He's got purple suspenders, a yellow tie (say what?) Come on boys, I tell you no lie His suit black, had funky spats He's the hippest hip hip cool cat I tell you no lie, this guy can't be beat Wherever he goes he turns up the heat So when you see him drive by with that big cheroot Don't forget to shout "Hey, Mr. Zoot Suit" if anyone wants them :)

@berretta9mm17 Жыл бұрын
There has been "heat" as long as music has been played - ANY kind of music. You should look into the history of musical numbers from the 1920s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, and up until now. There was so much heat, in so many genres, for all those decades, that the planet should have caught on fire. Check out the sounds of "big bands" from the 30s and 40s - they (some of them) will set you on fire. A good musician, and a good song, is good - no matter when it was written and played. One of the biggest tragedies in music was when the "Big Band" orchestra leader and composer Glenn Miller, was killed (most likely, if they are being honest - they almost never are) - most likely by a flight of bombers dumping their unused ordinance at altitude, while below them, Glenn Miller was flying in a small plane on his way to lead his big-band orchestra to entertain the troops. Poof! His death wasn't even noticed when it happened - Jesus, I would have HATED to be the person who killed that man. Want heat? Listen to some of his songs. Man, he could BRING IT! (and that was before my time by about a decade). They looked for him for a long time, but it may have been just ... I don't know. There is a great movie about his life and his music, and there were a lot more besides him. Those guys could PLAY - and the women, too - but mostly singing. "Zoot Suit Riot" is another GREAT song, re-done by "Cherry Poppin' Daddies," if I remember right. One example: kzbin.info/www/bejne/l5TFXp2pZZWWapI (it's coming back - this was an old Ella Fitzgerald song - and - kzbin.info/www/bejne/gIvQYp6oi7CteLs (this is about something that really happened - a remake of that STYLE, by a great modern band.
