It's sad that people are so quick to put down the N/A model MR2. I love my 5S-FE equipped MR2. Mine has no power options (steering, locks, windows, etc) Mine doesn't even have ABS. So it's relatively light. It's not a fast car by any means, but I have no problem stepping toe to toe with the turbo guys and other cars with more power. The low end torque makes the 5S-FE MR2 relatively quick. I live in the mountains so power is not some I really care about. :)

+TMR 89 You are right, I like mine a lot too, I'm not saying I would not like a turbo or v6 BUT I like this car soo much. I have so much fun with it. A lot of time I like to take the mr2 instead of my Supra Turbo!

Great video. You summed up my MR2 experience perfectly. I bought my GT-S when I was 26 and without a doubt was the best car I ever owned. I missed it so much, in fact, I had to go out and re-buy it. The whistle of the turbo boosting behind your ear….bloody magic. Mines a 92 and for a 23 year old car the styling still looks great.

Great video! I had a 91 MR2 Turbo back in 2000 and got to experience the lift off oversteer. Good tires are a must! I now have a 2001 MR2 spyder and I'll say the handling on this model is superior but I'm looking to get back in a mkii for the love of the car. The mkii just fits you like a glove, I have owned 20+ cars and none compare!

Great video! Well spoken and great production. I kind of stumbled into the MR2 community on a whim, coming from owning many 240sx's. Though I still love my Nissans like no other, the the that struck me most was the community around MR2s. These people are passionate about their cars, and are far more accepting of peoples different personal styles. I've now owned an SW21 and AW11, and dream quite often of owning one very similar to this car shown.

My first car to actually drive a lot in was my mom's 3rd gen MR2. With this being my first car, every other car just seems boring. Now I want to buy my own car (im sick of having to ask my parent's permission all the time) and I want it to be a 2nd gen MR2. There aren't many videos of it on youtube, but yours is definitely a very nice one! And you have a very nice looking model as well.

jude m I suggest you buy that MR2 and find those twistie mountain roads and LIVE like never before. you dont need do drive like a moron, and that snap oversteer is no worries. just pay attention when you flat out the first times on slippery roads/tight corners. I love theese videos high quality perfect mr2 roads. Very inspiring. i just HAVE to finish my V6(3vz) conversion now.

I've already bought an MR2 :) NA however is 3sge which is surprisingly enough for me. Driving it on the mountain was insane and one of the most exciting things I have ever experienced! I tend to use left foot braking (which I learned from driving a FWD, which is the Celica) and it greatly reduced the chances of an oversteer since I had full control of the weight transfer. Ooh good luck with the V6 conversion! I was also highly interested in swapping in a 1mzfe since we have tons of parts for these in Australia I believe, but I'm a little hesitant on whether I should keep the 3sge or not.

I have a slightly modified black 91 turbo (american model)and its an experience like no other! I can hold my own against much stronger and expensive cars,the handling is perfect,the sound of the turbo is great,and people are atracted to the car like they never seen one before! I could easily sell it for 15 000 as it is now,but every ride is so worthy and satisfying,that i'll never get rid of it!

I owned a rev3 turbo and now a rev5 red-top Beams NA, I can tell the turbo is more a challenge to tame. but when comes to the convergence between the driver and the machine, I vote for the 200ps 3S-GE Beams. I describe it as a more civilized Lotus Elise. Oh yea, I strongly recommend the installation of the rear strut bar, the differences is extremely vivid. A budget option is to get JDM rev4-5 X-shaped bar combine with Cusco strut bar, it will work just as good as the TRD alternative at a fraction of its price.

I have a '91 NA, JDM-spec. I have only ever spun out once, And that is because I drove arrogantly around a corner which sweeps out then cuts in and the end and was a bit aggressive with throttle and steering wheel. You have to remember engine is in the back hence lighter steering and also the impact of weight transfer in braking. I spun out into the other lane and if there was another car going over our legal speed limit on some roads of 50kmph, I may've been toast. Luckily no one was hurt. I learnt how to drive in my old 04 Suzuki Swift, so in FWD you can get away but MR requires a lot of skill especially if you are going to track. Don't be put off by all the negative hype - drive safe - and especially safer in the rain - and you'll be aiight.

@mrolskul 9 жыл бұрын
Norville Rogers Actually, mid-ship is a modern term mostly used for front engined cars that carry the engine behind the front axle. Back in the early eighties the only designation for cars like the MR2 was Mid-engine, meaning behind the driver. I was around when it was introduced and remember it well as my brother bought a new one in 1986 and we did a lot of research prior to the purchase.

Mr Ol Skül Didn't know that, thanks. I've only ever heard the word "runabout" together with mid-ship in terms of MR2s.
@mrolskul
@mrolskul 9 жыл бұрын
fastrax203 You are correct, I meant to say from '93 through '95 (in the U.S.). BTW, the '95 models offered a one-piece rear wing which in my opinion made the car look more modern than the previous three-piece of early MkII models. I think the '95 models were the best looking models of all MR2 ' S, but, sadly, also the heaviest.

@RoadsUntraveled
@RoadsUntraveled 9 жыл бұрын
22358 Toyota designed the car so it could function like normal cars do. Otherwise thousands of MR2 owners would have mis-firing engines haha. As you can see in the overhead shot there's a plastic cover on the underside of the engine lid that guides the water down a specific path to the ground where there isn't anything that can get damaged.

This guys description of the car from the get go it so accurate, plenty of grip and control until it dosnt then its all gone. I own an NA and (since is slow) especially in the rain it is hairy and requires a lot of concentration even at low speed on the stock wheels. Car is loads of fun and strikingly beautiful for its age

@braydonlill9708

+Peter Derouen If you have the money / want to modify the best way is to get some wider wheels (no companies make good compounds for the stock wheels) and tyres all round on a good (potentially all weather) compound and a set of coilovers (the rev1 1998-1992 sw20 have a poor suspension set up - later models are better). If you arnt going to modify then the best thing to do is get some new tyres, check your manual for pressures and when driving in the rain just take about 15% off the speed you think you can go in a corner in a 'regular' car - roundabouts can get very hairy if you push it. Not to say its impossible to learn to drift or drive this car quickly in the rain if that's your thing. In general just take your time with it, its not a mass consumer car, it has a real personality. Most cars pre 1995 I believe wont be equipped with airbags and i believe rev1 models did not have traction control as an option although all the cars have ABS. Ask the seller what saftey options the car has if its a concern. I have driven a rev1 since i was a learner driver, my first drive in the car ended in a 180 after hitting some oil on a wet roundabout so i learned pretty quick that it demands respect. The car only has coilovers at this point and is a daily. Dont let this put you off the car, they are very rewarding on a dry road and i definitely recommend the turbo as i find myself wanting more power at this point. Hope that addressed some of your concerns? haha - and take it with a grain of salt, do some googleing of your own as im just going off what i can remember right now. +Jamie Simms - regarding your question

Braydon Lill When I was about eight years old, I was driven around in an MR2 by a family friend. I'm definitely not deterred just a bit concerned about it, haha. I intend to heavily customize it by dropping the engine and swapping it with *something* just not entirely certain on what yet. I want to get my MR2 first then play with that. Thanks for the thorough response. Would you recommend wider tires AND a good set of coilovers? I intended to get an AW11, but after some research I really want an SW20 or SW21. Thanks.
@braydonlill9708
@braydonlill9708 8 жыл бұрын
+Peter Derouen If your swapping an engine a lot of people are going with the 2gr-fe, if you look around on mr2oc(dot)com forums youll find loads of stuff. Im looking into it myself. People can definitely get by without modifying too much, i personally like the stock wheels, but more grip and better handling are hard to pass up so coilovers and wheels could only make the car better. Its just expensive. Also if your looking for more power youll probably need larger wheels for a big brake kit. They sell a lot of this stuff on twosrus(dot)com Check out /watch?v=rz-dN4kUwSI if you want to see a pretty well sorted car with a 2gr

Just hold the throttle if it starts to rotate on you, gently roll on throttle through corner, gently let off once you're out of the corner. Don't let off. Ever. You drive a midship like a motorcycle in the corners. Motorcycle gets loosey in corner, #1 no no is letting off. Thats how you highside. Don't that and you're just fine. :) Fantastic narrative of the MR2 community and obsession with the car. I have a FRS and a Aw11SC as well. The FRS is 'easy' to drive hard and beyond its limit. The 2's are something entirely different and wonderful as you never quite get 'good enough' and there is always more as you learn.

Shadow1986 The only true way for me to drive and I'm pretty sure a lot of you guys will agree to this, are the mountain roads. If I did have the turbo MR2, I will have the unwanted lag and is slightly heavier and that can be disadvantageous on twisty roads. I would never underrate the NA MR2 as they are just as fun on the mountains as the turbo really and the gear ratios really are near perfect for the corners. However, I had to sell my MR2 recently and I miss it very much already.

dariunas Yes exactly! I'd much rather tune the suspension on my car than adding more horsepower, I love how an MX5 was tailgating me throughout one time during a mountain run and overtook me when he had the chance. I just felt like having a nice cruise but I had the urge to catch up. Waited till he was out of my sight and then powered on, caught up within half a minute and he was still trying to push it lol! Mid-engined cars are unparalleled when it comes to cornering. Pure excitement..

Sweet man i'm sure stock is 380mm i'm a big guy at 6'3 and my right knee taps the wheel, a shorter diameter would be a lot better for me. I've got an NA but for me in a year or two i'll be getting a 1MZ FE V6 conversion :D Turbos are amazing but to me MR2 is about the experience and sound and the grunt of a 3litre v6 just pulls me in more than a Turbo. +zealotscout If the car is stock and untouched it will have a plastic cover on the underside of the engine lid. Toyota wouldn't be able to sell a car if it didn't start because of a little rain. I live in Vancouver where it also rains 9 months out of the year.

Outstanding Review. I am subbed. Unfortunately many MR2s come with cloth seats and door panels. Not many people have seen an all black leather mint Mr2 turbo. It makes the car look even more exotic and expensive. Some people are under the impression that this is a dangerous crappy car from the 90's because they see Riced out/ sad versions most of the time with hideous body kits and crappy paint jobs. Also the ugly blue leather interior in some doesn't help much. As soon as you see a mint Mr2 turbo people fall in love. I love the SW20 and is a head turner if you keep up with them. I doubt I will ever get rid of mine.
@RoadsUntraveled
@RoadsUntraveled 9 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I have to disagree with you on the cloth. I love cloth seats and would way rather have them over the leather. Sure, leather looks 10x better but I'm sitting in the seat 99% of the time and not looking at it. Doesn't get hot or sweaty in the summer which is nice. The SW20 is no doubt a head turner if it's modded tastefully. I'm going to be putting in leather door inserts though for sure.

Roads Untraveled Maybe I had to have had cloth from the beginning to appreciate it more. I see your valid points. It just makes me cringe to sit in a cloth mr2 that smells like old ass and has stains from who knows what. Im sure nice clean mint cloth ones would be nice like the ones in the video. Especially for curves as it will keep you gripped better to the seat than leather. I just love the smell, feeling, and looks of leather. I think its a problem.

@airtec87 9 жыл бұрын
Roads Untraveled I have cloth seats myself, but I rather have leather seats. However being the cars are 20 years or older now, even the mint leather seats will start to decay if they aren't already. In the long run, the cloths are better. Surprisingly the seats I have are still in good condition, and not ripped. Even the N/A seats I had weren't ripped.

Hey, nice video ! I am looking for a MR2 to buy but I only find atmospheric engines in France, as the turbo version wasn't sell here. I heard you wouldn't buy a non-turbo MR2, but I didn't understand why ! Can you explain yourself ? Thanks a lot !

+Erwan Hm The non-turbo MR2s are fine. They're perfect for cornering and overall driving in general. From what I understand, European models had the option of a 3S-FE or a 3S-GE. Make sure you find one with the 3S-GE since it's the strongest engine out of the two. Greetings from the US.

+Erwan Hm I'm not 100% sure but I think the reason you would purchase a non-turbo is for an engine swap and solely for that.

Turbo or non turbo, doesnt matter. Still ine of funnest, cheaper cars on the roads. Definitely dangerous. But thats what makes it more exciting. And a more impressive car to still have 25 years on. Not many left in NZ with our horrible roads. Im on my second g limited. Had one when i was 19. Ex partner hated it. So it was sold (unfair lady). Now almost 23 and in my second g limited. Non turbo. I concur with everything here. Sometimes its nice having an underpowered chassis that you can hammer on and not worry about the car getting away from you. Thats why I'm considering getting an n/a SW20 which would be my first mid-engined vehicle. Well technically my S2k was but...ya'll know what i mean. After I'm comfortable with the characteristics of its unique handling than swapping in the 2gr similar to the "white stallion" vid.

+Mike Seeds surprisingly torquey, pulls nice even on the motorway. I drive a 1991 EUDM MR2, and love it. With stock suspension, wheels and everything it definitely feels like a 90's car tho. Not sure if I could beat the new age 2.0TD highway cruisers with it, but I'll try after some oil change and repairs :))

I dont know what you are talking about. Low end torque? I have a stock unmolested 91 mr2 turbo and its a dog at the low end. As for showing a pic of a foxbody mustang gt, yeah i dont think so. I also have a foxbody mustang and stock vs stock the mr2 has no chance in the acceleration dept. I thought it was a pretty good review but im assuming this mr2 is not stock therefore, the review is not very helpful and thats what your review should be if you are making a video of a car review.
@RoadsUntraveled
@RoadsUntraveled 9 жыл бұрын
Hey! First off, thanks for watching :) Your stock 1991 MR2 Turbo has 200 lb/ft of torque while the one in this video is a JDM-spec 1994 which makes 224. Not a huge increase, but can make a world of difference. Second, if you go to our instagram profile "RoadsUntraveled" you'll see a short video of me racing this exact foxbody Cobra. It was an extremely close roll race but the MR2 pulled away. A Foxbody Cobra weighs 3,200 lbs and has 235hp. My 1994 MR2 GT-S (Which is 100% stock and original other than suspension and a steering wheel) weighs 2,700 lbs and has 240hp. Just by comparing those numbers we can see the MR2 is faster in a straight line. 5.3~ 0-60 vs. 5.9~ 0-60 for the mustang. As for what my review "should be", I think it can be whatever I want it to be. If all car reviews on youtube were of stock cars that would be extremely boring if you ask me. Once again, thanks for watching :) glad you enjoyed the video.

Roads Untraveled That said, also. The 1993+ MR2s have the CT20B turbo which spools quicker and produces more power earlier on then the CT26 that's in the Rev 2 3S-GTE of 1991-1992.

Nice video but useless. How are you going to show off a car with pieces missing from the dashboard? Nothing was really said about the driving experience and cost of maintenance etc. how are you going to say it's not about rivals and show a foxbody mustang? I have both and stock vs stock the mustang will leave it in the dust. I love my mr2. Snap oversteer is exaggerated. The car is not reasonably reliable, it's absolutely reliable in stock form.
@RoadsUntraveled
@RoadsUntraveled 9 жыл бұрын
It sounds to me like you want to read consumer reports. I'm sure they have detailed data on cost of maintenance :) - As for the dash, not sure whats missing?.. - Here are some facts: Bone stock 1994 JDM MR2 GT-S (the one in this video is bone stock under the hood) - 240hp - 2,700 lbs. - 0-60 in 5.4 seconds. Bone stock Foxbody Mustang Cobra (the fastest foxbody ever built besides the Cobra R of which only 250 were built) - 235hp - 3,200 lbs. - 0-60 in 5.9 seconds. The cobra weighs more and has less power. Stock vs. stock the MR2 wins.
