Thinking outside the box and evolving my game! First 5 mins are great, i feel the video ran out of steam a little towards the end so i'll adapt my scripts in the future. The goal is super tight, funny but informative vids. I'm still planning to do my No-BS vids as well, these are just fun to make and hopefully good for the KZbin Gods 😆 Hope you enjoy it!

Had a great Matthew Holness vibe to some of the lines. "I've got an absolute beast of a PC which eats 4K for breakfast." You heard of Mercian Studios? Well I went down there the first day it opened, right, and I edited a couple of clips. I full-screen previewed. The bloke that runs the thing came over and said, "Oi, no professionals." I took my glasses off and said, "I'm not a professional." He said, "You're not a professional?" I said, "No." He said, "Well you should be. If I was you I'd enter the Academy Awards. And if you edit like that you'd probably be the best in the country." I said, "I'm not interested. I'm getting loads of positive comments on KZbin."

NOTE: The template file is just a template. When you click it, it creates a new project with that timeline within. You can just hit save to save the project. The template file WILL NOT be overwritten. Meaning the template file is always there, ready to be clicked when you want to start a new project and it can be located anywhere on your PC 🙂

Howdy from TEXAS! Do I need to create a copy of the same timeliine template for each Project Library that I want to open it into? Seems like it opens in the library that I was in when I created it. Of course, I can save it and then copy it to the desired lilbrary. Is that the best idea? Or, is it better to create multiples templates?

This explanation was masterful. Describing the difference between your computer having to edit 4k as opposed to 1080p as having to color in different sizes of paper was so easy for me to understand. Then, your narration had such helpful footage and editing. You shot your computer having to consume 4k. You showed your footage stuttering when you talked about missed frames. I am impressed by the work you put in to bolster the explanations you gave. I would be interested in seeing a tutorial/video on your process. What steps do you go through when creating such a story? Do you first make an outline with supporting points (or supporting visuals)? Do you make storyboards and revise them as you go? Do you write out your script, use bullet points, or just wing it the first time through? Anyway. Good video.

Yea. I edit in HD myself and render in 4K. The playback is smoother without proxies. (EDIT: I actually set my project to 1080P. Then when I'm ready to render, I change the project to 4K. Playback is dramatically smoother when I do this.) (EDIT #2: I like your Timeline Template thingie. I think I will set that up as well.)

So timeline or project resolution has some major downsides beyond what you explained. I used to edit in 1080p and change to 4k for export. However, if you want for example to smart mask an object/person and you do it in 1080, as soon as you switch to 4k the mask tracking gets cancelled and you have to do it again. The render in place also for mp4 takes the timeline resolution so you’d have rendered 1080p footage inside your timeline when exporting 4k. My solution: run Optimize Media for the footage in the media pool that will make it play back real time.

If you proxy to a low 4k bitrate, you can get multicamera editing on an intel or apple igpu, in other words fast decoding, but you get 4k calculations beyond that. Some apps optimize some functions to save some of that processing. If you do the editing in lower resolution, you save processing, but decoding is at full resoaultion. You can do both but all processing must be scalable to the final revolution. Some processing gets better results when it has higher resolution and higher bitrate input. If you do drama that only needs cuts, you can proxy and work at lower resolution without a problem. You can edit film in dv format as was standard in the past. Fast performance is critical for real editing, with rhythm and actors performing. Effects can wait. If you do advanced processing you can optimize nothing. In some cases you need to go lossless or uncompressed to achieve a complex workflow. Low bitrate 4k proxy is easy on hardware acceleration and perfectly compatible but not ideal for processing. If you replace it, some things should be recalculated. There is no perfect solution. It depends on what one wants to achievw. The latest hardware is certainly not enough, even for simple full resolution workflows.

noob question kind of related: I recorded something that's 20GB then tried to edit it in davinci with a video of yours that recommended project settings, but after processing it the video is 100GB! Is this normal? isn't there a way to have it 20gb and without compressing it? like, I've heard using avidemux could help but I've tried that and it works but I loose a track of audio, so basically it helps me but I can't hear nothing. Is there a way to fix this or a recommendation?

Maybe is there a way to paste the missing audio track via avidemux?

Excelente video my friend!! Specially your Oscar interpretations of a computer. RESOLVE SHOULD HAVE a keyboard shortcut to go from 1080 to 4k faster when you need to check an effect or a color correction. Also, 95% of the time we edit we use the UI with other windows, that means that even if you edit in 4k timeline you are actually seeing an 1080 rectangle inside your monitor. Thats the real reason that is pointless. Cheers !!!

thanks for the video, a quick question, when i render a video, on my laptop which is pretty fast (i7 Dell 32gb ram etc), if i have several filters and animations taking place on a few occssions my output has shown a glitch (probably because my laptop struggled to handle it I guess) ...do should render some complex parts seperately in the vidoe and then bring them in as a new composite video to take the strain off the rendering, or is this going to lose quality / there is a better solution?

So if I only make videos at 1080p, should I be editing them at 480 instead? I've never even seen 4K Ultra-HD. Not sure if my monitor can do that even. Not sure if my eyeballs could even acknowledge it was happening. Just checked... 4K looks indistinguishable from 1080p on my screen. Guess it can't do it. But if I can see the bars on your irises and the individual hairs in your beard in 1080p, does that mean the individual pores on your face are visible in 4K?

I have 2 quick questions: 1. if it's as simple as dropping the res to 1080p, doing all your editing, then switching it over to 4k before exporting, why don't most people do that? As so many people it seems are obsessed with getting super duper hardware that handles 4k easily?! 2. will this solution help if i have multiple 4k files i need to edit? example: 1 x main cam's 4k footage and then 2 x go pro 4k footage, all being edited into the same video? Thanks a lot!

Great video. Thanks for posting. Having said this, maybe you have a "minute" (or someone else for that matter) to help me out? I just need to understand the very basics of codecs, timelines and exports. I looked everywhere, but every tutorial out there seems to skip over the basic basics of the very basic stuff, if you know what I mean!? 1. I have a ton of GoPro files, but my PC is too old to have a smooth workflow in Davinci Resolve, so I use 5DtoRGB to convert the files to ProRes 422. This allows me to work with them, with no issues. Here is my question: Can I "convert" back and forth between codecs, and if so, what consequences will this have on the files!? Lets say you have a GoPro Video (either h.264/AVC videos in MP4 file container or H.265/HEVC files in MOV file container) and convert it to ProRes 422, and then back to the original GoPro Format. Will this this somehow "decrease" the quality, or is it kind of like zipping a file and then unzipping it!? 2. What difference does it make which resolution my timeline has!? Does it matter if my timeline is HD or 4K? 3. Same goes for exporting. You start with 4K, edit in HD timeline and then export to 4k again. OR, you start with 4k Edit in 4k and then export in HD, or 4k or whatever. Then back to the original file format... You see what I mean!? All these different formats?! What the heck??? Thanks.

Quick question (assuming you are someone is still responding to this older, but still relevant video). If I have 4K AND 8k clips and put into (or convert a current 4K timeline) to 1080, then before rendering, change back to a 4K timeline, do I lose anything on the 8K clips? Many of those are shot in 8K due to cropping I may need to do in post so I don’t want to lose anything in this conversion process. Thanks and great video as always!

I´m having this struggle without know how to deal with it, I have a Mac (Hackintosh) with a processor 13900k, 64GB ram, a good Motherboard Asus ProArt Creator, 3TB, and the RX580 8GB. I started editing a wedding video, that has 5 angles for Multicam, long videos for example the ceremony: 1 hour, in 4K! So, I try to use proxies, converting the files, and I couldn´t continue because I was in the need of more storage in my 2 NVME 1TB each, the first one, I had to whole project taking almost 1TB I tried also to use all the preview at 1/4 and running at 7fps!!!! Completely frustrated until now. I´ve been thinking to downsize the files from 4K to 1080p, because at the end, the final delivery will be at 1080p, I´m open to suggestions or tips. Thank you so much in advance.

Does not work. When I open the timeline saved to my desktop the project settings are 4k resolution even after I saved the timeline with the 1080p setting you showed on the tut. Tried multiple times making sure in the blank project the project setting are set to 1080p and the timeline settings are saved exactly as you show. Using Resolve 18.1- maybe a bug in my version, not sure. Any help why it is not working as you show would be appreciated. Thanks.

Honestly, I still shoot in 1080 a lot. Most people can't tell the difference between 1080 and 4k. I suppose if you were projecting on a huge screen you might but not on most people's systems. Dynamic range and 10 bit color are way more important.

Is there way to leave timeline setting at 1080p for better performance and monitor in 4K on bigger screen?(via ultrastudio 4k mini on TV)?

Really good video, thanks What is the big difference on the end result when having a 1080p timeline and and exporting in 4k and having a 4k timeline and exporting in 4k ? Thinking editing in 1080p timeline, change it to 4k before export, or just exporting the 1080p to 4k BTW, which monitor are you using ?

one question: when you change the timeline resolution itself to 1080p in the "media pool" but the project settings/master settings is 4k . what will happen? do i have to mess with master settings too or do i leave it alone.

I always made proxy actually but I'm gonna try this technique instead.. Only issue I don't think I can use your technique with bumping the time-line resolution since I work in 4 and 8 k dci so the ratio won't stay consistent. But the option to half or quarter the resolution playback should be just fine though

Wow, your brilliant! Thanks for this, never really considered this as atm it's not really relevant for what I'm doing but to know this is so useful for future reference, thanks buddy! ;D

Just brilliant. I think one of the things that have become dreadful in my KZbin Video creation process is how much time the editing process can take. Will definitely go back and prep my workflow. Create a Timeline preset, get a LUT and speed things up.

Why change your timeline back to 4k at the end there? Can't you just deliver it in 4k? Is there a difference if you do?

Can I ask what the advantage is of doing this over just having a template project saved in a Template Library? I have just experimented with this and from what I see, there are limitations when using a saved timeline in that it cannot save multiple timelines unless you create a master timeline and have the other timelines on the master timeline then save the master timeline. But this feels like a hack as when you open it up you have this annoying additional timeline you did not really want or need in the project. Also, it does not save any organisational structure of your content. From my experimentation, just saving a project in the project library overcomes these aforementioned limitations of having a saved timeline. You can save a template project with multiple timelines and a default folder structure. You can also edit in 1080p in the same manner you described and then just up the resolution for exporting. Am I missing something? I just cannot see the advantage. The only advantage I see is if you want to share timelines between projects in which case you can export a particular timeline and then import it into a different working project. I do see this as maybe being useful or if you want to share a project across different computers. There is also an archive feature in DR for doing this. I did learn a few things from your video though and I will definitely be editing in 1080p going forward because I agree with you that it's just a nicer experience as my computer just eats through 1080p effortlessly. Thanks for the video, although I raised some questions, I did really enjoy watching and it challenged me to look into changing my workflow.

I hope in 2 years you have discovered that you do not film VIDEO. :-) Two different skill sets and historical timelines. Digital Video is what film wished it was. You shoot, and produce, or how about make most of your video in 4k. And another way to compare 1080 to 4k is that anything bigger than 1080 is anamorphic and does not necessarily affect image quality.

Few questions… please help the newbie! 1. if im editing in 1080 space with 4k footages. But want to render in 4k , is there a difference between ur “changing timeline setting to 4k then send it deliver” method vs sending the 1080 time line to deliver and selecting 4k output from pull down? 2. im editing in 1080 space with 4k footages. But during few scenes, im zooming (x2-3 times) into some clips, at this point, is Davinci getting my original 4k footages to “stretch” less during this zoom in? Or is it stretching the 1080 clips that are in the editing scene? Thank you!

I'm on an m1 air so it struggles even in 1080p timelines, I was wondering if there would be any issue with keyframes and scaling if I want to export 4k but I cut it in a 720p timeline temporarily

I work in 1080 timeline and render in 4k. While I am not the best or most experienced editor or colorist I think that all the sweat over detail is kind of a losing battle anyway. You have to consider that the vast majority of your viewers on any given YT channels is most likely viewing your product on a phone. While it will be crisp on many phones there is also a lot of that small detail that will be lost due to screen size, streaming speed and YT defaulting to 1080p in most cases unless on Wifi and you force it to higher resolution. I don't think I am wrong in this opinion but am I?
