Day 7 in Tassie (Part 2) - Hobart To Gordon Dam
After spending the morning of Day 7 in Tasmania exploring Hobart and the ruins of one of it's historical forts I then left Hobart in the afternoon on a glorious ride up to the magical Gordon River Road to Gordon Dam. I didn't realise it at the time but this road was about to become my favourite motorcycling road in all of Australia!
This is the route I took: goo.gl/maps/a1...
Gordon Dam: tasmania.com/p...
In late February 2020 (only a week or so before Covid border closures and travel restrictions) we set off on Suzuki V-Stroms for a 3 week motorbike trip from South East Queensland to Tasmania and back. The reason for the trip was to meet fellow V-Strom owners from all over Australia in the Apple Isle and have some adventures. Lots of adventures! I rode 8000km on this 3 week trip, roughly 5000 getting to Tassie and back and 3000 on the island over 13 days there. Grinning with joy the whole time!

My Back yard, I love living here in Maydena. Those concrete structures are used for laser mounts to monitor movement of the dam.

That's awesome! I remember going through Maydena. There were a lot of roadworks just on the outskirts of the town when I did this ride. Ah! That is good to know about the laser mounts. I was sort of wondering out loud to myself whilst filming and nearly cut that bit out of the video but then decided to leave it in. I'm glad I did now! Thanks for the info!

We rode through Maydena en-route to Strathgordon a few weeks ago when the Red Bull MTB event was on. Yep, Maydena would be an awesome spot for a quick blat to Strathgordon and back

I was so grateful that I chose to do the ride on that day and also see the dam late in the day. I imagine it would be busier in the middle of the day. It was weird being there all alone for most of my time there!

It really did have everything you want in a great motorcycling road. Absolutely awesome! It is dam impressive! HaHa! It is crazy how far down it goes. One thing I forgot to mention is that you can actually absail down it! There are heaps of interesting facts about it here: tasmania.com/points-of-interest/gordon-river-dam/ The camp that night was a highlight of the trip. Nothing much happened, but that was the point. Just being there alone with nature was just what I needed! Video of that coming very soon!

I was thinking about you as I was editing it mate. If the weather had been better the day before, then from memory I think we were all thinking about doing that ride together and camping out there. Next time Kev! Next time! Thanks mate!

I just can't imagine roads with such a small amount of traffic here in England. There'd be a cavalcade of motorhomes, caravans and cars doodling along at 25-40 mph. And when you get to Ted's beach the car park would charge for bixe as well as all other vehicles.
@MrAusadventure

Yeah, you do get that in certain spots here in Australia too near cities. There's plenty of beaches where it is an absolute challenge and test of mental stability to get to them. That is the beauty of Tasmania. Although it is a popular tourist destination, it never feels crowded from what I experienced.

Amazing ride with complete changes in the flora. But I agree the steps on the dam are a killer. Lol I tried to get a ride on the rail but the operator wasn’t having a bar of it….lol

Great video. I've been lucky enough to ride that road several times now and have experienced very wet as well as sublime conditions. It too is one of my favourite roads I have ridden. I will never forget just how blown away I was by the scenery when I first reached the spot with the tree. The miserable weather gave the hills a real grey foreboding look, and one of the blokes on the ride reckoned it reminded him of something out of Jurassic park. Also worth a stop at the Wilderness Lodge as the view out the back over Lake Pedder is spectacular. We just got back from Tassie motorbike adventure #5 and already looking forward to #6

It is spectacular and mind blowing isn't it! I'm still looking forward to trip #2. I had a few friends tour Tassie a month back and I was very jealous that I couldn't go with them. They had much better weather for their trip than I had. The 2 days out to Gordon Dam and back were the best I had there.

We lucked out with the weather this year. Seven days of riding and I didn’t wear the wets at all (admittedly some light drizzle leaving Strathgordon) Last year we got soaked most of the trip so this year was a bit special

Been looking forward to this one mate, since watching your posts, response to posts and listening to you describe this road for a few years now! Got to say that, in spite of losing your Audio (and I know how frustrating that must have been, there would have been plenty of commentary and reactions in the files) this has been a great series, some of your best stuff!

I am fairly confident that you would absolutely love this road! It's a dam good one! LMAO! You'd love camping out there too. I've been really looking forward to editing this part of the trip, the ride and the camp. Thanks mate, I appreciate the feedback and am glad it is being well received. It has been time consuming to edit and challenging to get that feeling back into the videos that I know I would have lost with the audio. Losing the banter with the others as we were on the rides around Queenstown and the excitement at riding such awesome roads, you just can't recreate that energy.

What was the night sky like? Where I am 30 miles south of London it's difficult to make out big constellations even, such as the plough.

My partner is from Essex about 30 miles west of London! We camped 2 nights ago and sat there marvelling at the stars for ages. The night sky is always amazing and so full of stars here in most parts of Australia on a clear night away from the city light pollution. I've spent a bit of time in the Northern Hemisphere and there are nowhere near as many stars to see at night as there are in the Southern Hemisphere. We are very lucky here.
