We played major concert pieces, symphonic music and patriotic pieces. I also enjoyed playing holiday music. Some of my favorite pieces are Gustav Holst - First Suite in E-flat and Second Suite in F. I also loved to play Suite of Old American Dances by Robert Russell Bennett. I also loved to play any of the music from the musicals and I love any of the music composed by John Williams. I also love the big band and swing music such as any of the Glenn Miller tunes. Thanks for asking. @@jaelin7380

Dear Phil, thank you so much to share your Welsh Guard experience with us. Of course, only people like you are able to grasp the difference between the to-day situation with the one existing in the 70s. I’m a former non commissioned officer of the french army. It goes without saying that l can only admire the perfect way the British present their parades. Their level is incredibly high, they leave all other armies far behind, even the American or the German who are not bad. As l was working in England after 7 years spent in the army, l had a work colleague in Slough who explained me that the drill being carried out by some regiments such as your previous one or the Royal Marines is so complicated, so tricky that it can’t be written down. There are so many simultaneous actions that the only way to teach it to new recruits is the "learning by doing" method. Can you confirm that? I don’t even mention the way they play music so excellently and this, while marching complicated patterns. A symphonic orchestra musician never has to face so difficult playing conditions. Thank you in advance for your answer. Please receive all my respects and greetings. (I saw many times the "Royal Tournament" in Earl’s Court or Edinburgh Castle. As I was in England also in the 70s, l might have see you in Buckingham or Windsor Castle, who knows? 😂
@8ballphil150 Жыл бұрын
@@Laurent-Raggos you are correct . drill is learnt by doing it . constant parade square sessions in training . the likes of the queens birthday parade or state visits and so on are trained for separately . the garrison sergeant major for london has so much responsibility for the parades . the queens funeral was planned decades ago . the code was london bridge is down . there is a set sequence of things that are set into action . the gsm has a pace stick , and that is so important . not only for the length of the pace but for the distances between the regiments , the bands and even the street liners . without an experienced gsm , the parade wouldnt happen . as for the bands and corps of drums , it is difficult enough to be a musician , but also to march to a high standard is even harder . basically every thing in the parade is set from the pace stick . a set measurement for everything .
@Laurent-Raggos Жыл бұрын
@@8ballphil150 Dear Phil, thank you so much for your quick and interesting answer. I think the public has no idea how tough the Queen's and now the King's Guards have to train to bring their parades to such a high level. It was for me a great pleasure and honor to exchange words with you, to my eyes you aren't an ordinary person but someone exceptionnal. Not everyone serves the Crown of England and you must be very proud of your life. Each year, million of people come to England to visit London and of course, to watch also the Changing of the Guards which is a must for every visitor. As many videos show it in YT, sometimes all these numerous visitors are somewhat embarrassing not to say annoying or disrespectful. Once again thank you Phil, keep well, I wish you all the best. @michaelmelton9691 Жыл бұрын
@@kevinpierce3458 My wife and I are looking forward to a return trip to the U.K. My love for the U.K. started in July, 1969. I was an 18 year old U.S. Marine. I was fresh out of High School living in a place that some people would call hell. I was thousands of miles from my home in Oklahoma. I was scared and homesick. One of the things that has been critical to the mental health and spirit of the fighting man in all wars but especially this one was getting mail from home. When were in the field the mail was something we all looked forward to. My girlfriend back in the states had all of a sudden quit writing me letters. At first I didn’t think too much about it given that long delays of our mail catching up to us was not unusual. One morning I ran into a friend who had just came back from the States after being on leave. We were the same hometown and had attended school together. He came over to where I was sitting cleaning my rifle and said “man I’m sorry about your girlfriend dumping you”. I told him that was news to me and that I hadn’t heard from her for a while. He didn’t know I had no idea she had dumped me. Well, needless to say I was crushed. She finally sent me a “Dear John” letter telling me she couldn’t marry someone who was serving in that illegal war. To say that I was depressed was an understatement! However, in my line of work being depressed and distracted could kill you. About three week later during mail call I was told that the First Sergeant was looking for me and that I had mail. My First Sergeant came up to me and handed me a package. Actually it was a shoebox that had been wrapped in brown paper and it was addressed to me. The return address just said LONDON, ENGLAND. I was sure it was a mistake because I didn’t know anyone in England but there it was addressed to me. I opened the package and was stunned at the content. In that box there were letters, note cards and crayon drawings. They were from school children in the U.K. They told me they were praying for me and they hoped I could go home soon. There were crayon drawings of their dogs, home and towns where they lived . One little boy in crayon wrote “try to stay alive and don’t get dead because that would hurt”🤣I never found out why they did this extreme act of kindness and love to me. I don’t know how they got my name. Those children did more than raise my spirit. I am convinced that they actually saved my life. Ever since that day in July, 1968 I have been a total fan of the people in the U.K. Even today when I think back on that event it brings a tear to my eye. What kinds of people show those acts of kindness and love to a complete stranger? That’s easy for me to answer: it’s THE BRITISH PEOPLE! Please forgive me for being so long winded in the telling of this story. I just wanted you to understand why I have a tremendous love ❤️for the British people. PEACE & BLESSINGS , MIKE

@@michaelmelton9691 Blimey. That is strange how they got your name as uk didnt get involved in vietnam. I was 15 in 1969 and didnt connect to vietnam at all at the time. Guess it may have been a teacher at a london school with connections to the states? Then possibly your first sergeant saw you were down at the time and gave you the box? Anyways its great that you felt appreciation from us at that time. My home city of plymouth has a memorial to the us military on the banks of the river tamar where the soldiers boarded their landing craft on their way to normandy during WW2. I can remember my late mum who was a young girl ar the time calling them "those nice americans" as they used to give her candy on her way to school past their camp. One of her elder relations married a gi and went back with him to the states after the war. Salt lake city area if i remember correctly. Bravo & well done 👏. The military bands and soldiers in the UK are well known for their stirring and precise marching. There must be considerable practice and drill to move as large group so precisely. Can't help being deeply impressed.
@mihai25262 жыл бұрын
When marching with bands in the Comonwealth forces its simple. when the drum hits, your left foot should be hitting the ground. Other than that, marching is basically just exagerated walk at 120 paces a minute
@BBob12 жыл бұрын
@@mihai2526 Tell that to the Navy. 😂😂😂

@@BBob1 you're a bad man. The RN regularly show up the army with their marching skills, as for the budgie botherers we'll not go there.
@johnnunn86882 жыл бұрын
@@mihai2526, true-ish. When marching in a long column, with the drum beat taking time to reach the troops further away, plus the chores off the buildings, other ways have to be found; like sight.

Good point Big Dog, something a lot of people don't realise, the 'Royal' Marines and all our other Military have been around for hundreds of years. Hats off to the Bandsmen and women who took part in Beating Retreat. We were there on the wednesday, and were hot, just sitting watching. We weren't marching, playing and wearing those standout uniforms in temperatures still in the 20°'s even though it was in the evening. Brilliant Band, stirring music, and what a backdrop. Made us so proud to be British.
