Don't think I've ever seen a Channel closedown before. Their "footage of the Queen visiting the region" film was what HTV used to do as well.

The network prime time offering for ITV on Tuesday 4th May 1982 was Crossroads, Give Us A Clue, Sorry I'm A Stranger Here Myself, The Morecambe and Wise Show, Party Political Broadcast, The Brack Report, News at Ten, The Human Race and last programme was Crying Out Loud.

They just switched the transmitter off rather than the usual practice of fading in a testcard and test-tone then switching off the vision carrier with a unstable jumpy black screen and finally switching off the transmitter resulting in snow.

There was no ‘stand by’ mode on electronic devices then so either tv was on or off. If left on overnight and unattended it could overheat, especially if it had been on all evening and start a fire.
