The best part is that he didn't just win, he wiped them out. I couldn't believe that the announcer had so counted him out and focused on the the two lead favorites that he didn't even see him Mine That Bird sneak through and he had such a lead by the time he did realize it his amazement was almost comical! What a thrill, when you talk about heart, this horse has it in spades!

Absolutely the greatest ride ever. And he really did mess up the track announcer. Even in the first call he was so far back the announcer missed him and then called him way late. And then he doesn't see him until he's 3 lengths ahead. But watching Borel is amazing how he first gets right over to the rail and spots the field 25 lengths and then turns passes horses staying on the rail; comes off of the rail to pass a few and then darts back to the rail to win easily. Goose bumps every time!

The fact that the announcer didn't even know the name of the horse after he was in first for at least 5 seconds makes the upset that much more special. Twice he missed him, he forgot to call him in the backstretch he was so far out of it. WOW

Mine that birds win is more impressive than Rich Strikes in my opinion because he came from dead last most of the race. Rich strike's was amazing also and the race call helped it as well. Here Tom Durkin blew this call for Mine that bird. But he does make Giacamos 2005 kentucky derby win extra exciting with his call there. Tom durkin gave many awesome race calls. TIZNOW wins it for america....giacammos....monarcos he was as fast as secretariat call...but he failed on this mtb call. In his defense...the track announcer is way up at the top of the track and they use binoculars to follow the horses throughout the race. In a 20 horse field...not an easy task! But these 3 legends had some of the best derby finishes of all time. Mine that bird...rich strike and giacamo. Look up tvg announcer goes crazy to see Ken Rudolph go nuts when giacamo wins!

If a horse sits in the back of a trailer, is driven all the way from Nevada to Kentucky that way, has a 50:1 odds, and still wins against all the AC kept, well fed Arabian throrughbreds, that certainly makes for a compelling narrative. This is one of those MANY races where you look at the racing form, look again and want to burn it, realizing that a lifetime of studious handicapping is essentially meaningless and curse the day you made your first bet and got into this stupid game. And, to add insult to injury the same thing happened with Grindstone, Birdstone, and Summer Bird...all horses you could never bet 'on paper' but proved to have a tenacious bloodline.

Only he wasn't ludicrous...he was the 2 year old Canadian champion....bought and sent down to Sunland park and raced within the week. @helixcheerleader
@helixcheerleader 6 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately he never won again. Yet at the same time you can't really call him a fluke, either, considering he just missed in the Preakness and still hit the tri at Belmont. What an odd yet tenacious and loveable little horse. Too bad we will likely never see a Giacomo or Mine That Bird type horse in the Derby ever again, neither of them would have gotten in/been eligible if they had ran in the Derby in 2013 or later, the points system has really changed the shape of the race. No more cheap speed or early speedball types - the opening quarter here was suicidal and Pioneerof the Nile did very well to fight on for second. If he had been further back he might've been closer to MTB... although with those opening fractions it was the perfect setup. (And personally I think it's a shame, I mean you can't tell me a 50-1 longshot going 20 lengths from last to first by nearly 7 lengths isn't exciting as hell!?) And what an amazing hat trick by Calvin to pull off the Oaks/Derby double on the same weekend on a Frontrunning presser and a deep closer. Must have been a fairytale year for him.

My favorite Derby EVER!! Also my 'favorite' Derby call, in that Mine That Bird is mentioned exactly twice, far back and ... oh, wait ... who just won??? Seriously, how many lengths ahead do you have to be before somebody notices you? It's not like he won by a nostril. He killed. Guess Mine That Bird knows better than anyone how Secretariat felt, who was also basically ignored in the Derby call. With Secretariat going in as a race favorite, it wasn't quite that bad. What Mine That Bird does from 2:32 to 2:38 is just so ridiculous. The slomo is great but actually following it in real time makes you see how explosive he was. He not only blew away the rest of the field but he stayed in full throttle while making a sharp right and then a sharp left. For being such a long shot and so far back, I think this just edges out Secretariat as the greatest run of all time. And for my money Tom Durkin makes it even better by completely missing Mine That Bird TWICE -- first for being so far BACK (1:55), and then for being so far AHEAD (2:50). Incredible stuff.

Good evening. in a "50 to 1" scene, a gentleman during the Pre-Derby party says "This year we have owners from England, Dubai, France, ireland and even from New Mexico!" (laughs) You know who opened that door? Venezuelans Gustavo Avila (jockey) Juan Arias (trainer) and Juan Quintero (groom) when they traveled to Louisville in 1971 to win, against all odds, 97th Kentucky Derby with Canonero II, a horse born in United States and bred in Venezuela. His owner, Pedro Baptista (RIP) couldn´t travel due to financial problems. Their performance was very similar to Mine That Bird´s one. Greetings from Venezuela.

Yes, its the Derby and there are a million horses, and yes, hes one of the all time greats, but I think if you asked him, he would even tell you it was not a great call of the race. That being said, an UNREAL trip on Mine that Bird by Calvin Borel. So patient, and he never had to check despite having to pass 19 horses while using the rail the entire way. I come back every now and then and watch this race again, "for the lift." I was there that day, watching this race in simulcast at a nearby casino. I wasn't entirely new to horse racing, but with significantly less experience in horse rating than I am now. But on that day, I remember not only being annoyed by the boisterous crowd in the game room (Derby day) and standing room only...I was using the DRF form at that time "often enough" and said to this lady next to me, in reading this horses's running lines-- "look at what this horse can do!" She just kind of stared back at me with a blank look on her face. (And I thought "newbie") I even left the casino early that day, thinking I'll catch the results on the internet when I get home--"got wiped out early " on my funds that day. Can you imagine how I felt, when I got home and checked the results to see that this horse came in for the win at 50-1! No problem though, I've learned to wait for horses like this ever since. It was comforting to know (and still is) that I had elevated to a new level of "handicapper's ability" w/ this the race of 135th KD and my ability to see the potential of and witness the astounding ability of a horse's elegance and grace under pressure that day in Mine That Bird!

zdlr Movie was slow & hokey, but fairly accurate as far as I know the background. Pretty thrilling though when they finally got to the race itself. Calvin Borel's appearance made all the difference, & the shot of him in the gate snorting like a racehorse was perfect. I whooped and hollered like it was all happening for the first time.

zdlr It was great! I loved every single second. I laughed, cried, and cheered! #ChristianKane did an amazing job portraying Mark Allen. This is a feel-good movie that the whole family can see, and we need more of those. I plan to purchase this DVD when it comes out, so my family can watch this over and over. It is definitely one for our library of movies.

***** I loved it from start to finish.. it was a true story.. so yeah.. not everyone lives a life of full of thrills and chills.. it was about the relationship of the men who owned the horse.. and between the horse and men.. and what they endured on the way to the winners circle.. saw it three times.. and loved it more and more each time! #ChristianKane and #SkeetUlrich played their parts to perfection... and #CalvinBorel .. well who knows how to play himself better than the man himself?? awesome from start to finish.. I highly recommend it for everyone!.

I remember being in high school, idly flipping through the sports page looking for baseball news, and casting my eyes on the upcoming horse races (not the Derby). Saw the name Mine That Bird and it never left my mind due to its oddness, or something. Crazily enough, I just minutes ago realized who he was! He won the Derby WTF?!? Came here for the highlights and just wow holy shit.

When I showed this video to my boyfriend, he said, "Whoever owns this horse should fire the trainer and jockey. What an embarrassment" as he pointed to Mine That Bird trailing the field. As they were coming down the back stretch, I commented, "Wow, the announcer even forgot Mine that Bird was back there." Of course, I knew the outcome of the race... As the race ended, I said, "Remember that horse you said was an embarrassment? He just won." And then I replayed the last 1/3 of the race showing Calvin Borel's brilliant riding through the field. My boyfriend was basically speechless.

According to the movie, "50 to 1" the race caller was watching with binoculars only. Naturally the binoculars help to see the number on the horse and jockey, but on the stretch he should have watched on the monitor. And IMO it was unprofessional of the race caller to not know the No. 8 horse was Mine That Bird. Football casters memorize a lot more player names and numbers.

This just cracks me up. He's four lengths in front before ever getting a "call." This was fictionalized with humor in the "Mine That Bird" movie, with a racing office clerk trying to get the announcer's attention to tell him Bird was making an awesome move. Seeing the actual footage, you can tell the announcer had to check his program to see who was in front, it was so implausible. And best of all, "Bird" ran great races in the Preakness and Belmont as well. If he'd been running in the 1980s when racing had a million-dollar bonus for the best Triple Crown performance (1st-2nd-3rd), he'd have won that,
