As a professional tile installer and business owner love the video and anything DIY I think it’s awesome to show people the process. Just wanted to throw a few things I noticed that could help on your next project! For any tile that is longer then 15” you should try to use at least a 1/2” x1/2” towel for better coverage and also like you did back butter the tiles. Love schluter use it on every job, not sure if you did but after you waterproof you should like the thinset cure for a full 24 hours and then do the water test since the Schluter can’t absorb the moisture like cement board it’s good to let that cure. Over all I would do things differently but everything you did was correct and you shouldn’t have a leak! Again just want to help pass some information for your next project, keep killing it!

Looks good. One bit of tiling advice, make sure you are always combing the ridges perpendicular to the length of the tile not parallel, that allows the air to escape easier for the ridges collapse when you set the tile. Gives a stronger bond with better coverage.

Couple notes: the drain grate needs to be tapped down just lower than the tile when setting shwr floor. So water doesn’t pool around drain. Bullnose tile on outside edges, could’ve been trimmed to line up with main field tile grout lines. Painters tape is your best friend when using black grout lol They sell an aerosol can of knockdown texture for patching that ceiling back where it matches existing knockdown. Might be a nice finishing touch. They make an inexpensive pipe cutter for attaching to drill. You could’ve just cut the 4” and pulled it out to make room for Schluter drain flange. Just thoughts for the next one. Great video. Good content :)

Great job I really like it. One thing I want to add is these type of tiles do not need to be sealed only the grout.
@nob.s.renovations89464 жыл бұрын
Grout definitely does need to be sealed because with time water will absorb through the grout and get stuck between the tiles and the water proof membrane. Also it will cause tiles to crack and your grout will grow mold and mildew and start to look unpleasant to the eye.
@demitra434 жыл бұрын
@@nob.s.renovations8946 Yes sir. Also depending on what kind of sealer you use it should be reapplied accordingly. Another good tip is to keep harsh cleaning products away as these actually just work against the sealant. It may look clean for the moment, but you've just created porous grout. 👍

I thought you can’t use anything under 2x2 for the Schluter pans? Penny tiles cause too much point load on the foam
@scorpio65874 жыл бұрын
I believe I heard that from TileCoach.
@FusionXLS3 жыл бұрын
You can always call Schluter to confirm, but they allow penny tiles on their pans with one exception: no canes/wheelchairs/etc. in shower. Basically, nothing that has a small area point load.

Learning has occurred! Seems like a good idea to use the Kerdi membrane w/ green board instead of the Kerdi board. I like the idea of just overlapping the membrane 2 inches instead of using the Kerdi band for the seems. Probably keeps the cost down too, I would assume. I didn't catch in the video, how did you fix the drain issue? How well did you match the texture on the ceiling? I have texture all over my house and hate it! Trying to see what best practices are out there before I tear into some of my drywall. Keep up the good work bud!

Minimum code allows you to drywall a shower surround with mold resistant drywall and cover with a water proof membrane (aqua defense, red guard or schluter) Next would be a cement board, dens sheild or the cherry on top would be the shcluter foam board it's self.

Hi, I noticed the wall between the shower and the door to the bathroom is about 10 inches wide, did you check to see if it could be made thinner and given the shower an extra 4 inches. I know that does not seem much, but in a small shower like that one 4 inches would made a big difference
@tylernettestad4 жыл бұрын
That’s a lot of work for four inches. It would also cause the drain to be slightly off center. Probably some of his reasoning.

Was the original intention to have the shower head in the ceiling instead of the wall? I’m just curious why you demo’d the ceiling if you didn’t place the shower head there?
@cocainejohnson24334 жыл бұрын
He Demo’d the ceiling to see if he had the space to run the plumbing lines in order to install the rain shower head, but I’m assuming there wasn’t space since he didn’t go that route
@victorvek52274 жыл бұрын
@@cocainejohnson2433 I mean, you can fit 1/2” PEX tubing almost anywhere. I think I’d have rather lowered the ceiling by another sheet of drywall just to avoid that shower arm in a phonebooth and achieve true top-down rainfall.
