Rick Rubin AND Johnnu Cash are amazing ! People in the comments seem to forget that SOCIETY had given up on Johnny Cash 😒 and it was RICK that brought him back! Now Rick being the minimalist he is will never take the credit he truly deserves for what he done But THANK YOU RICK AND JOHNNY for believing in each other and working through the pain !

Up in the hills of Tennessee we would have said that Columbia "got too big for their britches" or they "got above their raisin'." They became gigantic and they stupidly forgot the man who made them gigantic. Johnny Cash is like Hank Williams. His music will be around for generations to come...long after Columbia is gone and forgotten.

Mr. Johnny Cash put country music on the map. When he met Miss June Carter he set the ring on fire. The magic came alive with the love story we all witnessed.I always appreciated his honesty in music. So wonderful to hear KK render hommage to the real legend of Johnny Cash.

What is funny is the country music establishment turning their back on Johnny Cash around the middle 80's to early 90's, shunning his work with Rick Rubin for the American Recordings series, only to finally give rightful praise to Cash (after disowning him for so many years) right around when Cash's health was in rapid decline. They hail him as the number one icon of country music, when Johnny himself hated categorization. He's right. He has a foot in many genres, besides country music. In the broadest terms, he's a singer-songwriter like Woody Guthrie.

well said-awesome comment! I'm very new 2 Johnny-Im only 26 years old & it boggles my mind that the label he trusted, befriended, was at for decades & made millions of dollars for, turned around & dropped him so easily? So cruel. He was a great person, a phenomenally talented singer and song-writer & deserved constant respect--long before "Walk the Line" was filmed & it became vogue to like Cash-IMHO...

Well, I love his work during his time at Sun Records. I'm sure you have heard that stuff though. "Hey Porter", "Folsom Prison Blues", "I Walk The Line", etc. But I also liked his stuff with Columbia. His concept albums such as "Ride This Train". His prison albums are groundbreaking. "Live at Folsom Prison" and "Live at San Quentin" are highlights. His final work with Rick Rubin is fantastic, such as the "American Recordings" series. Are you wanting me to list specific songs or will this suffice?

It shows people recognise how great a man & how influential he was. I'd never seen the list thanks for pointing it out. I was looking through it & the top 6 would be my top 6 but i couldn't put them in an order, they are all amazing. Cash would be my #1 though. It was great seeing Jimmy Rodgers in it he is often forgotten probably due to how long ago he died. As it said he was the Father of country music. I would have squeezed in Tom T somewhere.

People are essentially a product of their own time. As much as I have always respected JC, the country music of the late 80’s-early 90’s was simply superb. Having been born in 1964, I don’t get today’s music..nor do I really want to. It just doesn’t seem to have the same soul. But I have developed a deep appreciation for the classics I passed up in my youth. Peace!

I was born in '61 and grew up around country music. The junk from the late '70's onward was NOT "superb", unless your idea of "superb" music is taking the worst aspects of commercial rock and the worst aspects of commercial country, slapping them together, and selling it to clueless hipsters as country music. One good thing about life in the 21st-century is that young indie musicians have followed the music back to its roots and are performing real country music without sounding like they're trying to imitate the old stuff, in spite of the fact that the Nashville money machine continues to push its commercial shlock.

2 very brilliant figures here , icons . Rick Rubin and Johnny Cash . Wow ! The Cash series is absolute mind blowing . This is NOT country music ...... this is the broad perspective of 2 geniuses putting it all together . The backing and the musicians involved with the American projects also , Tom Petty , Flea, Chris Cornell ...... etc .......

I noticed that this CMT program excluded one of the biggest traditionalist Country stars in Nashville during the late 80's and early 90's, and that was RICKY VAN SHELTON. He was untouchable in talent and record sales. Columbia screwed Ricky too. It seems Nashville don't like people who tell it like it is. (insert middle finger here for Ricky).

Record sales might have been the be all & end all for record companies but in 50 years from now Cash & his generation will still be remembered as the true greats, the 'newer' artists will be remembered because of their sales but not for their music.

Look at his 1994 interview here with full cheeks, dark hair and a powerful voice and then look at his 2002 interview here. He's gaunt, little hair left, weak and trembling voice and his mouth barely moves. He aged TREMENDOUSLY from the 1994 to 2002. It's as though he aged 40 years in a span of 8.

He already saw what has happened. He saw the start of the downfall. However, you forget that since he's in heaven, he may still be able to see, but it wouldn't bother him. He is, however, seeing the great country music from people like Cody Jinks, Christ Stapleton, and many, many more. Lastly, Today is Johnny's birthday!!

Nashville prouds itself on on the fact they didn't produce the first platinum album, lacks Sr. in the Opry, and robbed AP Carter blind. Oh yeah, Toby Keith's making 500 million and letting Mercury know it.

1980s Is when country music started going bad. It's such a shame though. The country greats were still there, but the awful garbage country music started to slowing infect the music. Such a shame man........ At least you got like Chris Stapleton today. But he is the only good one today.

To be fair (& accurate) it wasn't John Cash vs Music Row. That's not accurate. it was more like the Label (RCA, Columbia, Capital, Decca, Atlantic, etc.) Producers were told to, no matter what, make it radio friendly. That was rule #1 from New York or LA. They were following a formula for air time. The only way anyone got to try something they wanted to, if it didn't fall in the perimeters of what the producers wanted, then you were told an excuse why you couldn't or it wouldn't work on the record (for some reason) Waylon Jennings wanted more base drum on one of his songs and the producer said no! Waylon said " why the fuck not" he asked? The producer said "too much base will just roll around on the record, radio won't play the record with too much base. And the big one: that ain't country! They bossed every artist at the label, every Label was the same... more or less. Not just country music either, Nashville Tennessee cuts all types of music. Different genre, same treatment! If you think I'm exaggerating, look up what a non-performance clause is. And every artist on every Label has one!
