That little apple toss is a reference to the 1976 miniseries I, Claudius; specifically to John Hurt’s performance of Caligula, who does the exact same thing in the episode where he is introduced as a character. Takes a bite of an apple and tosses it over his shoulder.

No it’s not the first time I’ve seen an apple toss… but considering the Ancient Greek clothing and spoiled brat nature and flamboyant expressions; it seems like a reference to me. Also the guy kinda looks like statues of irl Caligula so it makes sense

An Edwardian woman from the 1900s, a guy dressed in Roman costume with Egyptian eyeliner, a crocketer, a 5 year old girl, a slave from the 1800s and a fish tank with piranhas in one clip. The 80s were amazing.

That’s because this was filmed as part of a “video album” Soft Cell released on home video formats, the first of its kind. There had been no real music video while the single was being promoted on the radio and dance clubs.

I think I have the answer to this video.. the little girl and Almond are brother and sister. The father (Ball/Cricket Player) separates from his wife (1900 english rich woman), within a disscution (scratch in his face) because she cheated with the Servant guy. Almond hates his mixed race sister because she broken the family, at the point he dont went out with her sister to see 'their father' play cricket.

[Intro] [Verse 1] Sometimes I feel I've got to Run away I've got to Get away From the pain you drive into the heart of me The love we share Seems to go nowhere And I've lost my light For I toss and turn I can't sleep at night [Chorus] Once I ran to you (I ran) Now, I'll run from you This tainted love you've given I give you all a boy could give you Take my tears and that's not nearly all Oh, tainted love Tainted love [Verse 2] Now, I know I've got to Run away, I've got to Get away You don't really want any more from me To make things right You need someone to hold you tight And you think love is to pray But I'm sorry, I don't pray that way [Chorus] Once I ran to you (I ran) Now, I'll run from you This tainted love you've given I give you all a boy could give you Take my tears and that's not nearly all Oh, tainted love Tainted love [Outro] Don't touch me please I cannot stand the way you tease I love you, though you hurt me so Now, I'm gonna pack my things and go Tainted love, oh, tainted love, oh Tainted love, oh, tainted love, oh Touch me, baby, tainted love Touch me, baby, tainted love Tainted love, oh Tainted love, oh Tainted love

I love the 1980s when so many bands, especially British ones, were populated by art school students, and their videos look like experimental films. Marc Almond was doing performance art before he was recording music. Don't try to interpret it logically. Imagine it as someone's dream. On a related note, Marc Almond as a mad Roman is like Kenneth Williams playing Julius Caesar in a Carry On film. "Infamy! Infamy! They've all got it In For Me!"

@@HoffinatorI don’t think this was ever submitted to the BBC. This was filmed as part of a “video album” and I’m sure the design was to make music videos to sell directly to people and bypass the standards and practices of British broadcast television at that time, given Soft Cell’s rather bent style and subject matter.

Tainted Love is a song composed by Ed Cobb from The Four Preps. It was first performed in 1964 by Gloria Jones, then by Ruth Swan in 1975. The popularity comes with the cover of Soft Cell in 1981 on the Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret album. The single will rank first on the British charts and eighth on the Billboard Hot 100. The new wave group Soft Cell became aware of the song as a hit northern soul in the UK and recorded a version with totally different arrangements in 1981. Produced by Mike Thorne, the song by Soft Cell has a more tempo slow as the version of Gloria Jones and is in G major to match the voice of Marc Almond. Synthesizers and rhythm machines replace the original guitar and bass. The Soft Cell version was saved in a day and a half. The final version was produced with the first vocal take by Marc Almond. A clip was made especially for the Soft Cell Non Stop Exotic Video video album. He stages the members of the group Marc Almond and David Ball in togas at Mont Olympe.

This wasn't their song. It was an obscure R & B Song by a singer named Gloria Jones that epitomized Northern Soul. It got it's name from the Black Section of Philly. It was all but forgotten in the 1960's because of Motown & Stax but in England it gained cult status who lived in Council Houses ie Low Income Housing. It was in the Billboard Hot 100 longer than any song in Music History. Rihanna later sampled the song for SOS.
