Hehe, maybe, science always looks like magic :D But in reality it's just repeat of your vision before, so in practice nothing more then tool, it doesn't guess for you :D

@@NordicLab Finally more of these decent videos on RA4 printing on KZbin :) I also got a Phillips PCA 060 color analyser but never made it through the struggle to work through the very brief manual. For some years now, I trained my eyes like Ribsy said. But now that I've seen how you use it, it does look very simple and I will give a try.

Thanks for sharing, it definitely demystified some of the darkroom process.

Great video again, I picked up one of those test printers as it’s such a great way of experimenting with the colour balance, like a mini colour round

Great video! thanks to this video i now know what the philips PCA 061 is and realised i had it laying around. the cyan is going to 0 but the magenta is always to + no matter what I change and the yellow is always at - no matter what I change. Do you maybe know why that could be?

It can be what it’s broken, i have problems with mine before. I made some new color calibrator device, but stoped development because of lack of interest from the market

@@NordicLab I just watched the video a couple times again and I've noticed that when you change filters on the device it makes a sound when changing them, mine doesnt make a sound when i change the filters. Can this be fixed easily? Because I think that is why the dial gets "stuck" when changing filters.

Could you make a video with a detailed procedure on how to use this Philiips color analyzer.

I'll try later, but it's quite boring to make and it's already plenty material on channel about it 🤫

Can I ask, the diffuser for the color analyser, does it come with the analyser? I have a color analyser Durst labometer but no diffuser. Can I use a sheet of frosted plastic?
@NordicLab
@NordicLab 3 жыл бұрын
This diffuser came with analyser, but put it in red filter holder in enlarger. This Is just soft plastic, so you for sure can use any heavy frosted plastic (or maybe reflector from the bike?) for diffusion and put it close to lens. If you not change it and set calibration knobs for parameters with it - it should work. But better to find instructions from yours analyser and check if it comes in kit.

@@NordicLab great thanks you. I have a number of diffusion mixing chambers which have frosted acrylic squares that I can use. Do you find you have to take a few readings as the diffused color is not exactly the same across the page? Thanks this is very helpful

Hello Aleksandr! Congratulations on your videos, I love them. I wanted to ask you because I just bought an analyser and it came without a diffuser filter and I wanted to know which one you use. Thank you!!
@NordicLab

Any type of plastic diffuser will work, just calibrate on it and use it always. This filter just should blend all picture in one color blend, thats it. Good luck with calibrations!

Great video and actually is the only video about color analyzer guide. Just one question Aleksandr: what are the knobs CMY on the analyzer for? I saw that you didnt touched them so I assume are irrelevant. keep it up and thanks for your videos🙏🏽!
@NordicLab
@NordicLab 3 жыл бұрын
It's for initial calibration of the values from reference print. When you have "good print" you adjust this knobs to make a zero position on scale and layer you can "copy" this good print balance by adjusting head instead. Thx for support!

Hi Aleksandr! I’ve really been enjoying your videos. I was recently given two of these color analyzers and I’ve had difficulty getting started. I noticed that your Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow values are set somewhere between 0 and 20 and then you are using your color head to center the meter. My question is, how did you determine the starting values on your calibrator (0-20 number on the dials). I can’t seem to find that information anywhere.

You need "ideal test print" for what. Just google manual for the device, it have quick start instructions.

Have you found this color analyzer useful? For the most part, I can correct my prints just by looking to them quite easily, but there are some pictures that are much harder to get the colors right. One particular problem are snowy winter landscapes. I have heard different opinions on this matter. As you have used your Philips for some time now, what is your opinion? Is it worth to buy one?
@NordicLab
@NordicLab 2 жыл бұрын
As answer you can check my more modern videos, but in general you can make single exposure prints without corrections. So it helps, but for sure not necessarily you need it.

An analyzer can be really useful if you have to print negatives taken on different films and with different lenses, or under different lighting conditions. At one time, I used a Pentax with mostly Takumar lenses, but a Zeiss Jena lens gave a much bluer image. The analyzer gives a quick way to zero in on the optimum filter settings. It is also useful when adjusting the exposure for different size prints, although with very big changes in enlargement it is better to recalibrate the analyzer. This Phillips/Paterson analyzer is the integrating type, but some others can make spot measurements, which can overcome 'subject failure' - where the analyzer is fooled by a dominant colour, such as green grass.

I’ve had the PCA 061 since the early 80’s. It never did it for me. Experience and a ton of wasted prints in the early days. But back then it was EP2 paper and chemistry.was gutted as it cost me a fortune to switch over to RA4
