These are masters in total service to the music. Such a majestic and devoted performance. Memorable and undimmed in brilliance by time. What dignity and beauty we seem to have set aside since then.

There can be no doubt that every bow stroke and move of the baton brings life to the music - only what is necessary is done- no histrionics, no facial contortions of angst, bravado, and melodrama-only the sound that Milstein creates on the violin, and the sound that Boult elicits from his orchestra in the service and dedication to this timeless masterpiece that Beethoven has given us. They are worthy of each other in every way.

Absolutely one of the classic recordings of the violin concerto by Beethoven, one of the hardest concertos to play ever. Here, you have Milstein with his unsurpassed bow technique and great singing sound. And Boult, with his unparalleled baton technique which shows every musical detail minutely and concisely. So, we see no hysteria but pure dedication to the music. Let’s not forget that music is, first of all, for ears. We can relish ourselves with great music making in this precious document. Thank you for sharing this video with high quality!

It’s absolutely marvellous to be able to watch and listen to one of the greatest violinists perform Beethoven’s masterpiece in one’s own lounge. Technology today is just wonderful. The conductor and orchestra are exceptional. These excellent masters have now left the stage, but before doing so, they’ve left us with a myriad of young virtuoso’s today, who in their own right, never disappoint.

In my mid teens, I started to buy LPs of Nathan Milstein. I think one is his Encore and the other one is the bigger pieces with orchestra. None of this can be found in CDs, but individual pieces are included in his CD sets. Later, I brought his Mozart Concertos and Bach's Sonata and Partitas. They are incomparable. Sir Adrian Boult conducting Beethoven was my first exposure of the Symphony music. I even name my son after him.

@David Edwards ~ Elisabeth Matesky here, happening to see your Reply which is to me most observant and Right On re Mr. Milstein's Mastery of the Bow ... NM invited me to private study advanced NM Bowing once I had played Chaconne of Johann Sebastian Bach to him at his Invitation in September 1968, going round to his new London home in Chester Square, to play! I had been with his revered Leopold Auer St. Petersburg Authentic Assistant, Sascha Lasserson, studying & on my Fulbright Fellowship, RX'd by my 'Other' Mentor, Jascha Heifetz, to when moving to London, study with Sascha Lasserson, whom both NM and JH so admired from their boyhood studies with Auer. Mr. Lasserson introduced me to his great friend/Auer classmate, Milstein, following, oddly, the LvB Violin Concerto and with the Philharmonia in the RFH/London, evening of 28.9.1968, and NM invited me to ring him at his home to arrange a time/day to come round to play the Chaconne of Bach! It went well after my US Concert Tour of over 66 Concerts, and NM began immediately to start helping my Franco-Belgian Bowing early on taught to over a first year private studies twice weekly for 3 to 5 hours each 'Tutorial' a week, mirror NM's own rare DNA Bowing which was/remains fabled and the 'Key' to his remarkable Artistry ... More but need to return to sleep over here in the US! I am so Delighted You noted the rare NM Bowing he so graciously shared with me until I 'Got It' with NM's gloried mentoring Liberating my playing to then mirror one's inner ideas on interpretation of The Master Composers on the Violin ... Best Wishes from America ~ Elisabeth Matesky/ US 11th January, Anno 2 0 2 5 ~ * A Word: I private studied with Mr. Milstein for 3.5 Years Twice Weekly lasting 3.5 to 5 hours each time w/NM's wondrous mentoring liberating my concert playing to be signed on Same Concert Artist Mgmt/ London for All Europe/et al with Violinist Roster: NM, Ricci, and Henryk Szeryng, as youngest Violinist with such fabled Violinists! I felt it important to mention due having Wigmore Hall debuted and a BBC Radio/Television Artist under contract plus a fully developed International Concert/Recording Career in Europe/So. America, Asia, & in my own Country US, upon returning yet loving London, my beloved home ... The End!
