We review the 2022 Triumph Speedmaster Gold Line limited edition motorbike and find out how good it really is.
This stunning special edition Triumph Bonneville 1200 is simply amazing to behold.
We give it a thorough test ride as usual and give you all the facts, feelings and figures you need to know. We look at the stying, the brakes, engine, power and torque delivery, seating, ergonomics, handling, geometry and more. We even get the BMW R 18 in for a size comparison. Is it good for plus 6 ft riders? We find out. Is it a good fit for shorter riders?
We forgot to mention the gear-change - its great! Really smooth and positive.
The Ol Man also moans about the usual pointy plastics and tft screens found on so many bikes and why he prefers analogue.
Is the Triumph Speedmaster a cruiser? We discuss this and would like to know what you think too.
You can get a very good impression here too on how this Triumph Bonneville 1200 parallel twin high torque engine sounds with stock pipes.
Also the new puppy makes an appearance and we have a bit of a rant about motorcycle manufacturers in general and 'marketing executives' and 'social media executives' who seem to be missing the biggest marketing trick of all, as Million Dollar Bogan ‪@danielhayes-domore‬ would also agree; KZbin reviews!. We also explain why we have to sometimes include product placement in our videos. We don't do this very often and only recommend products if they are worthy - we turn down many more than we endorse (theres none in this video by the way).

The sense of humor, no bullshit reviews, the editing style is all top notch. I've bought a speed master because of this channel. I've bought an RE Continental because of this channel. I went back and got a ex demonstrator RE interceptor from the same dealer for the wife because of this channel. I need to stop watching this channel for my Visa balances sake.

Im thinking about the speed master now more over t120. Im 6 ft it just looks more comfortable for long riding. had triumph street triple r and I’m glad this bike is analog display and not digital. My digital Tft on my street triple r fried an they aren’t cheap to replace. I did put a lot miles on it especially for a sports bike I think it’s time to switch back to cruiser. Im getting to old to be hunched over😂.

Excellent 👍 choice. I'm 5'9". I road a 2004 Sportster custom for many years as my primary. This is what many true Sportster riders were kind of hoping Harley would get to. It's good middleweight size. Can tour all day with the 6 speed and water cooled design. I rode my Sportster in a club through many states year after year. I switched this year to a Bonneville T100 as my primary. But the Speed master is the way to go. It is a cruiser if you set it up as such. Add the backrest with luggage rack, baby apes, small shield/fairing, and forward controls. Then it's set to ride wherever I believe.

Just bought a 2022 Speedmaster a few days ago and it was thanks to you for your descriptive reviews of it and other bikes. It was down to a decision between the Speedmaster and the R18 for me. I'm 6' 4" and a heavy rider but felt immediately comfortable on the Speedmaster. I didn't go with the R18 because it felt too big for me and I didn't feel like I'd be able to control it well. The Speedmaster was comfortable and no issues with height, reach, or foot placement for me. I've had the Speedmaster for a few days now and it's incredible. At least for me a taller and heavy rider it was a clear choice. As you said in your review you feel "planted" to the ground. On the R18, the foot placement was a problem and I wasn't able to fully fit my size 14 American shoe between the engine and the foot pegs to the point it didn't feel safe, for me. It was a close second choice though. Again, I watched probably hundreds of youtubers but found your channel to be the most influential. Thank you for that. I definitely see me looking to buying an R18 someday, maybe with a few years of experience more in riding and a different footpeg setup. It was just too advanced for me at the point as a new-ish road rider. This is an invaluable youtube channel, THE definitive review site for motorcycle reviews is Mr. Darcy & the Ol' Man! Thank you!

I’m a big guy too. I love the Speedmaster and I’m a Triumph guy. For me, it felt too small for the kind of riding I do. I went with the R18 Classic based a lot on the review the “old man” have. But old is a relative term. (I’m 65) I also was able to purchase my R18 for about $1000 more than the Speedmaster that didn’t have bags or windshield. I think you’ll love the Triumph as it is timeless in its looks and is a great performer. Congratulations.

My father was 5'-9" and his best friend was 6'-5", and they won a three-legged race together because their legs were quite nearly the same length... and they were laughing through it all. The point here is inseam length, and age you will be in 10 years.. But the real clincher for me when, at 58 yrs old, a mere 6-1, but with a 34" inseam I bought a Victory Vision Tour in 2013. At 67 now, I can still ride it for hours on end. I've owned 2 BMW boxers and also a Honda Valkyrie Rune. When I was young I didn't have any issue riding my R75/5 for any span of time. But after breaking 50, my R1150 RT would make my knees stiffen and sometimes cramp my hip after 50 miles. It was a great performer, but at my age then was also emblematic of the expression, "500 mile bike, 50 mile seat." I had the same commute with the Rune, but would use the crash bars as highway pegs. That was the bike I traded in on the Vic which I still ride today. Miss the gawking at the Rune sometimes though...

@@redveston good point. At 6’3”(ish) my inseam is 33”. With crash bars on my R18 and rubber foot rests installed, it gives me some option to stretch out for a short time. Ride whatever makes you happy but the 500 mile bike 50 mile seat may be about as accurate an observation for the R18 as any. 😂

Agree with your comments. I was drawing up a similar shortlist. The Speedmaster was on top of the list, until I rode it. I love the look of the bike but ... I'm 6'2" and it did feel too small. For the bike choice: Keep both of them, i'll take the house. Can't get much better than that, love the look of it. I was about to say i am young and interested in the triumph, but with the 30 years passed i am not sure anymore where to fit. Just bought a used 2022 Speedmaster because of your reviews and others. I always came back to your reviews when I was having doubts about it as I already had a great T-100 to play with and the Speedmaster is a chunk of change. It came with high bars and a windshield, along with a backrest. I am a smaller rider (nowadays!) at 5' 9" and it fits me perfectly. Also 76 going on 29. I have only had it for a day but rode it for a while and I can say it was worth every nickel. Motorcycles are emotional beasts and this one just makes you want to hit the road. I think I will get some camping gear together and head for the Georgia mountains... it is that kind of bike...

I’m 5’10”, 59 years old and absolutely love mine. I bought it for the superb comfort and the power to do pretty much anything. My partner, 50 years old, 5’3” and 8.5 stone if she wears everything in her wardrobe and is soaked to the skin always wants to ride this rather than her Ducati Scrambler. Age and physical size are irrelevant, if it takes your heart then it’s the right bike. Youngsters I work with want to own one, older riders always come to look and talk. I have 3 bikes and a very nice car, but this is the bike that always takes my eye when I open the garage.

I have a Speedmaster, had the foot controls moved to center and T120 handlebars fitted at the dealer. Basically setup like the Bobber but with a very comfortable seat ! I prefer center controls. Moving the foot controls was no problem since the forward controls are mounted using that removable bracket. They did have to change the handlebar cables when switching to the T120 bars to prevent kinking. Totally worth the cost to customize it. Absolutely love it. I also have a 1200XC scrambler when I want to play around more. I’m a very fortunate guy ! Love your channel 👍⭐️😎 !

Mine arrived on Saturday, delivered to my door. I bought it after much consideration, after watching your review. Happily, in New Zealand we have normal-sized plates. I'm recovering from a back injury, but in the meantime, when I'm not doing my rehab exercises, I can go to the garage and gaze at it lovingly. In answer to your question, I'm a mid-60's rider. Why did I buy it? The Goldline models made my heart skip a beat in a way it hadn't since my wedding day. Down here in the colonies, I'm having a terrible time finding boots for my extra-wide 4EEEE feet. R18 is definitely a great-sized bike, but at $35,000 NZ pesos, (reduced from over $40K) it's a tad out of my league. The Speedmaster is a respectable $24990. When people see me riding past, they'll be able to say, "Hey, the bloke who ate all the pies has got great taste when it comes to motorcycles." Regarding your comment at 18.47, the boffins at Triumph should recognise just how much we depend on the likes of your good self when deciding where we are going to spend our hard-earned cash. The least they could do is throw you the occasional T-Shirt. The rake is 25.3º, whereas my 2002 America had a rake of 33.3º. The seat on the Speedmaster is a quantum leap ahead of the one on my bum-numbing America.

I traded in my 2017 Triumph Thunderbird Storm AKA the Triumph Dyna Low Rider for a 2022 Triumph Speedmaster Gold Line. I've had it for a little over a month and I've put just under 800 miles on it so far. The Triumph Dyna was a little large for me and frankly too Harley-like. I feel like light weight and sharp handling are core Triumph values and the Speedmaster definitely embodies those, especially in comparison with the Thunderbird. The quality of the paint is just impeccable, that's what drew me to this particular model. I agree the handling is excellent, especially for a cruiser, so I see why you were reluctant to put it in that category. I'm 49 years old and 6' tall. I have arthritis in my wrist due to a work injury so the beach bars weren't working for me, I went with the apes instead and they're perfect. I also added British Customs straight pipes and an x-pipe de-cat, proper loud now lol! I also went with the lower profile seat, which I'm having re-covered in black horsehide by a friend. As a final touch I'm replacing the headlight with a Bobber unit and I'm going with a shorter front fender to lighten the look up a bit. I love this bike!

My wife bought me a goldline Speedy for my birthday last month (yes I m extremely lucky). I know have 871 miles on the clock as of today, and 1st service was at 600 miles and cost with a triumph dealer £189. I traded my 2008 Speedmaster 865 and what a difference. The new speedy is heavier yet far, far easier to move around and deffo smaller which is ideal for me. I'm 5'10 so you are right its spot on for my height. In my 40 yr's of riding it's THE best bike I have ever rode. With every ride I genuinely chuckle, it's fantastic to ride. So easy, relaxed. Sounds (by the way the sound on video was excellent) and looks great. My brothers own a Rocket and a Thunderbird both of which look huge compared to speedy, but both my brothers love riding speedy. Again its so easy. I agree with all your negatives, front radiator does great mucky quick, tank is a little small with 12 litres, i'm getting about 150 miles per tank. I have bought a dart screen as wind on the chest at 70 mph wasn't great, so the dart is small and suit the bike nicely and reduces that wind impact. I was in 2 minds, Bobber or Speedy? I went with Speedy cos I wanted better long distance riding comfort and the seat is better than the bobbers (which is another stunning bike) and I can have occasional pillion. Top tip. Don't put your hand on the down pipe of the exhaust to steady your self to get down to clean the radiator straight after an hr's riding. Your hand sticks to the pipe and it hurts. ALOT... Finally, you video image quality and sound is excellent, looks great on my big tv. Great vids, really enjoy them, well done and thankyou

I've owned my Speedmaster Gold Line for exactly a year now, with 5000 miles on it and the positive comments are accurate. No mechanical problems, well built, looks good. My "cons" are: Get the mid-range foot peg option (a la the Bobber) and have the dealer install it; the foot forward standard ergonomics are murder on your back. Get an Airhawk seat pad or similar; the stock seat looks comfortable but gets very hard after 60 miles. The tank capacity is too small; you will be stopping for fuel frequently. Of course, that helps rest your back and your butt :-) For what that's worth! This is a great channel by the way.

Think it all depends on your personal build. I have a weak back as I had a sciatica blowout in 2018 and could barely walk for 7 months. The speedmaster has never hurt my back, but my old sportster Iron 1200 did. I have arthritis coming on in my right hip so forward pegs are great for me and they are not rediculous forward. I am 6 ft. 32 inch inside leg. Short people may have a different view. For me I cannot do rear sets due to the hip. All kinds are needed for all kinds of people.

I just bought a 22' Speedmaster Goldline day before yesterday. Some background on my buying decision. My younger brother left this world on his 80's GPZ 750 in the early 90's at 19 yrs old. I gave my parents a 34 yr reprieve from suffering that possible agony again, but they've both passed now as of this last Feb (22). So, out looking at Harleys since we live down the road from Sturgis, then we came across this. Drove the T-100 (900cc) which was a bit less expensive, but then took this for a ride. My last machine was a 1980 Yamaha XS850 Special which I loved, and which my GPZ driving brother creamed the tranny on while I was serving my Country in Okinawa as a young Marine Corporal. This bike made that 34 yr dry spell evaporate! Holy-moly, what a fine machine! I'm 6'1, 215 pounds, and it fits me just fine. Stretching the legs out is wonderful. Turning the throttle is wonderful, and just looking at it makes me smile. My buddy says I'm going to have bike envy at Sturgis this year, but I think I'm going to know something that the rest of them wished they knew... "This bike is the $&!+!" :-) Loving it, perfect amount of bike for me and my 100# North Korean (South) riding partner! Oh, and thanks for making these video's! I've learned a thing or three from them. Thanks again!

@@MrDarcy-OlMan Thanks, and thanks for the reply. I'll watch the review. I noticed my "Owner's Handbook" says "Bonneville Bobber and Bonneville Speedmaster" with drawings of each bike, one above the other, so you can see the differences. Glad I tripped over this gem. :-)

I'm from the U.S., I'm 70 years of age and a traditionalist. I have been riding motorcycles since I was 17 and have traveled throughout the Southeastern U.S. beginning with a Honda 350CC twin cylinder motorcycle. I currently ride a Can-Am Spyder RT Limited, but I would love to get my hands on a Triumph Speed Master. I love the traditional look of the bike, the simplicity of the single gauge, the feet forward riding position which is essential because of arthritis in my knees and hips. I have watched your video on You Tube as well as the video done by The Missenden Flyer and I have to admit the sound coming from the exhaust stirs my blood. I certainly hope to be able to get a Speed Master in the future if I can find a dealer within a hundred miles of my home. Ride Safe.

It is my favorite Triumph as well, and I thank you for convincing me to buy it when you reviewed the red one last year! I bought my 2022 Goldline Speedmaster sight unseen before it even arrived in the shop, and have only become more enamored with it over time. I’m 64 years young, 5'7" 155 pounds (it's perfect for my height and weight) and I have added some accessories to it that turns it into a touring bike or back to its original state in minutes. This bike is super adaptable, with more than enough power for me. You spoke of its features beautifully. And BTW, I disagree with you on one thing… I think you look great on it! But you do on your BMW as well, so, it should be the Mrs. ride! Perfect combo! :)

@@marcverdi665 I bought the Viking hard and lockable leather saddlebags (panniers) with a quick disconnect mount. They are amazing, and they do work perfectly, though we had to tip them a bit down ward in the front so a 2nd rider can easily reach the pegs, and so the QD works right. Not sure Viking will ship to the UK? I’m in Japan with the US military, and I had to have them first shipped to my sister in the US, then shipped to me. Good luck!

@@marcverdi665 Great, in that case, they are always running sales. I bought mine during the holidays in Jan. and got 30% off. I recently received an ad for 20% off. Their prices are super reasonable IMHO, and the quality exceptional. I also ordered the backrest kit from Triumph to fit my huge Viking sissy bar bag, but the backstay is still on backorder. Except for the floorboards, all of the mods I added are quickly reversible, which was my priority as I love the looks of my Speedmaster in its original state.

Hello. You gave a great review of the Speedmaster. Well done! I just bought a 2023 Speedmaster Goldline 7 days ago. I’ve put about 300 low-rev miles on it this week. My conclusion so far: I’ve owned a Moto Guzzi Eldorado, a BMW R1200RT, and various Yamahas, and I can honestly say that this Speedmaster is the best motorcycle I’ve ever owned. It is the most joy-inducing motorcycle I’ve ever ridden. And it puts a smile on my face every time I ride it. I’m 5’8 and it fits me perfectly. The design is thought out in every way. I ride back-country roads and it is perfect for that style of riding. Wishing you a fantastic day. Cheers. Dean Lappi

Hi All Had a Speedmaster for 2 1/2 years and love it A couple of dislikes, the numbers on the speedometer re revs etc, are TOO SMALL, I need reading glasses and cannot read the digits. Dirt on the radiator was always present so I made a plate that comes just below the radiator with an outward channel at the top to trap the dirt - works fantastically well, I have a small screen on the front which is great. The oil level glass gauge is almost impossible to read. The small pillion seat is a problem, so my partner has put a travelling neck brace (U shape) around it, and it has made a big difference to the comfort for her The fuel consumption is fantastic at around 25 +++ km to the litre upwards! There is no centre stand, which I would have liked, I have added a small external clock as I have previously said - cannot read the writing on the speedometer info panel I would have liked a rev counter, even if it is a cruiser There is no storage space for anything BUT I LOVE THE BIKE, best machine I have owned and I am 74 years old and only 1.6 m (5ft 3inches) and can easily get both feet on the ground!!!

One thing I noticed with this (and the Indian Scout) is the really low seat height coupled with a thin front to the seat. For people with short legs they make it really easy to flat foot and that brings a lot of confidence when pushing them about or at a stop. This seems a fair bit more comfortable too so if you're getting back problems or just want a relaxed rather than mad ride this could well be the bike. This engine doesn't make big numbers on paper but it just rides really well.

5'-8" and 57 years old here, and I've had my eye on the 1200 Speedmaster since 2018 as my perfect next bike. Pulled the trigger last August with a deposit and my dealer finally got their hands on one last November. Trying to sell my 2013 FLD Switchback first but this is a crummy time of year to sell a bike (even in southern Arizona where we ride all year) and I'm running out of patience! Especially with Hepco & Becker Xplorer bags, a Puig batwing demifairing, the factory tall bar kit and assorted other bits laying about my living room teasing me. Pyramid Plastics sells a front fender extender by the way.

Because realistically, my next bike will be my last, and as I get older, I have to think of things like weight. Your reviews are brilliant, and have helped me make a sensible, I think, decision. So second hand breakout, for 18g, or brand new speedmaster around 14 and a half. Mr Triumph, I’ll see you soon 😊 ps. I’m only 5ft 7.

Great stuff. I’m a recent returnee to biking, 48 years old and 6’ tall. I would definitely consider a Speedmaster if I could master the forward controls. I see it as a Bonneville cruiser more than a typical custom cruiser, but with a sissy bar I think it looks very cool. Interesting you mention the history of the monoshock back end. As somebody who started riding in 1990, I was buying second hand bikes from the early 80’s and in the early 80’s the twin shock was being replaced everywhere by the monoshock. I was determined never to own anything with olde worlde twin shocks. Fast forward 30 years and I still can’t quite bring myself to consider a twin shock bike.. which is unfortunate as I like the retro and custom bikes. So I absolutely love the hard tail look of the Speedmaster. 🤷‍♂️

Another excellent review! After sitting on a 2022 Speedmaster and watching your previous review video - as well as Freddie Dobbs’ reviews of the same - I decided to get one (in the gorgeous Hopper Red). It has been glorious. I’m 5’10” and as you state, it’s the perfect size. I think I would like the handlebars to be risen an inch or so, but otherwise it is a fantastic riding position, very comfortable. Forward controls took a little getting used to, but they’re not as forward as a Harley cruiser’s controls or certainly highway pegs, and after only a couple of months of riding and recently going to my favorite local dealership to sit on the T120, I felt like the T120’s pegs were in a speed twin position lol. I agree with your opinion that the Speedmaster is a street bike with a more relaxed riding position, but not a cruiser. She does get compliments everywhere I go, and most people comment on that aspect: that it’s like a classic Bonneville but with a touch of cruiser vibe. I just crossed 1,000 miles on her (I’ve christened my Speedmaster “Harper”), and I’m looking forward to many more adventures with her. Keep the fantastic videos coming.

To my eye the Triumph is perfection; it also has that lineage from the great British motorcycle tradition. The Ton up boys would have loved to have ridden it from Chelsea Bridge to Brighton and back. The R18 looks like it should have a sidecar and a machine gun mounted on it. Love the channel and reviews. I purchased a Street Twin recently found the review on this channel very useful.

I found your videos very helpful when deciding which bike to purchase. I've just (3 weeks ago) picked up a brand new Speedmaster Goldline and I'm loving it. I did have a test drive on a R18 and very nearly went for that but nostalgia and practicality made me go for the Triumph. I'm a lot shorter than you (5'7"), both bikes seemed fine size wise for me but my hips were aching after ridding the R18. I am an old man now (60) after all.

Another main advantage of monoshock rear ends, especially on dirt bikes, is you can have much greater suspension travel as the shock is mounted further away from the rear axle, hence the wheel can move through a much longer arc for a given spring compression. The Speedmaster obviously has a monoshock rear end purely to achieve the hardtail look IMO. At 6' 3", looking big on the bike wouldn't really bother me, my Street Scrambler also looks quite small with me on it.

Triumph did make a giant Bonnevillle cruiser called the Thunderbird and dealers couldn't give them away. It was a nice bike too. Stronger engine and way better brakes than HDs at the time. Triumph needs to bring back the the Thunderbird range. Call it the T160 or even T170. Do the Rocket3 treatment so a bit less weight and a bit more tech and boom they will be on a winer! Cause same like You I'm Tallish 6.1 and the Bonny range is to short small for me. That is why I bought a Moto Guzzi California Audace 1400. Which is a the closest bike to the R18 one can buy. I totally agree with you regarding a bigger Triumph. Currently have a 2011 Thunderbird Storm and it is a truly great bike. Especially for Australian conditions with its torque and 22 litre tank. I have approx 78,000kms and has not let me down. Many fellow Thunderbird riders have traded them in on American bikes as Triumph have left this market. In talking with these riders they nearly all say that they would of upgraded to a new Triumph if there was one. At 62 and 5''8"" I am looking at the Speedmaster in the future. However, there is one hold back and that is the small petrol tank. some towns here are over 250kms from each other. Which is a shame.

I love this bike. When I buy a Triumph it will be a Speedmaster. I like them in black but the Goldline looks better. After months of watching your videos it came down to the Thruxton RS, the Rocket 3 GT or the Speedmaster. The Speedmaster is the bike I keep coming back to every time. I'm 6' 1" and well over 19 stone so the shorter size might be a problem but I think its a problem Ill get over. I cant wait to get out on the glorious New Zealand roads A South Island trip is on my bucket list. Thank you for your content. Keep up the good work

Such a nice looking bike. I do agree about the license plate. Those things are gigantic. In the US they're about the size of a small envelope.

Indeed. I doubt our ridiculous government will ever change it!

Never thought about the SpeedMaster. When they were 900's they were under powered. Now, not so much. I must be getting old, I like the looks of the bike 😄

Bought a 2022 Speedmaster. Love the bike. I'm 5 feet 7 inches and 71 years old. I don't think it's a young (20's) persons bike but it you never know.

I own 900 scrambler, that was my 1st bike. I drive a lot with wife. I am 42 this year, and I consideration upgrade to this one. And my son gets my scrambler... seems like a good plan!
