Mr Darcy & The Ol' Man

We go into all the reasons why we think cruiser motorcycles are the number one choice for bikers, and no matter what bikes we review, from adventure bikes, to naked, to street bikes, to dual sport, to sports bikes, we always feel pleased when we jump back on our own bikes and feel happy that we own a cruiser.
In this video, Darcy & The Ol' Man are riding the Harley-Davidson Softail Standard with V&H Twin Slash slipons, and the BMW R 18 First Edition in bog standard form.
If you ride a motorbike that we would describe as having pointy plastic and a high revving engine, YOU need to trade it in for a cruiser!
We talk about the styling, the engines, the torque, the size, the appeal.
One of the bikes even has a reverse! And in this film you'll see why this matters! We also show how cruisers are a good choice for taller riders.
We review the main points that matter and you can make a decision if you think cruiser motorcycle is for you.

When I first started riding in 2020 at the age of 51, I didn’t know what I was looking at with all these different styles of bikes that exist today. Strange looking, insect/alien things with a handlebar and an engine. When I saw the “cruiser” style I felt home. Reminds me of what I remember a “motorcycle” should look like.

As someone who rides a Honda Rebel 500 everyday to work I can tell you I absolutely love it! And in the past I’ve had a Yamaha XS650 Honda CB550 Shadow 1100 a V45 Magna 750 and a Virago 750. And I can safely say only the Magna would’ve spanked my Rebel. All the rest would have lost to this little bike. So it’s got more than enough power for me these days and I really like the modern classic look. But I would NEVER EVER have an Automatic 😴 Anyway Love the video Gentlemen 👍 PS I like the look of the BMW better,Sorry Darcy🤷‍♂️ and he should leave the pipes alone. I mean it is a BMW!!!

If it was me and I had the luck to own that BMW I wouldn’t replace that exhaust at all. It has a really beautiful shape and complements the bike, and with that beautiful location that you live at why would you even need a loud exhaust? I’m sure you can easily hear that engine cruising at those beautiful country lanes…but that is just me and my opinion.

I have a BMW R1250GS and a Harley-Davidson Breakout 114. Technically, the GS is superior in every way. It’s faster, the brakes are better, it handles better, the suspension is sooooo much better, it’s more comfortable and it has better wind/weather protection. In comparison, the Breakout is a Neanderthal of a machine. It’s raw and brutal. And that is why …….. I absolutely love it. You have to really ride it. Be one with it. Makes me feel alive.

You nailed it and why people love Harley's just like they loved old British sports cars. Rawness, crudeness puts the rider in touch with their primal selves. Isolation makes a rider feel nothing other than a tach needle spinning on a dial.

I love cruisers, too, but they are are not practical as commuter bikes that need to navigate high-speed, busy American freeways. The taller German and Italian "plastic" bikes provide far better visibility, agility, and safety. But their aesthetics stink. There is perhaps one exception: the BMW K1600 Bagger, a fine-looking machine with terrific power and safety features. Any chance you guys can review one? Love the channel!

I love bikes with a classic look, but I don't like cruisers with their low seats. I prefer a seat that is about the same height as the tank, and mid rear controls. If I can't stand up on the pegs to clear obstacles I don't like it. That's why I prefer what Royal Enfield is doing over anything that Harley has for sale.

I've been flirting with the idea of owning a cruiser for a while, even had a few test rides on a Harley. Ended up going the other direction and buying an Africa Twin, but I think my next bike will be a cruiser. Your R18 is really growing on me, great value too, well at least in Australia where the price slots in between the Softail Standard and the Street Bob. Looks like more bike for the $ than the Harley's mentioned.

Before that I used to owna Street Twin and Before that a Hyosung GT650 R, the Yamaha is the only bike that stayed with me for over a year (let alone 2), I have to say I don't see myself ever selling this bike because its just too unique and too beutiful to let go, I only wish it had more than a measly 55 HP, but then again it is still stock, I hope to push it to 70HP some day.

I think cruisers biggest problem is their desire to be some sort of "luxury" item, prices of Harleys and Indians are obscene (The BMW probably too), especially if compared to the raw specs of them - and yes I know the specs isnt the whole story. But how are you gonna entice new riders to the cruiser type with prices like that?? Thankfully we have the Rebel 1100 to help with that.
@greysea4841

Hello there, I will be new into the bike world again as I am considering buying one. I am used to driving cars as in India where I live, it is more convenient as the weather here is hot most of the year except for the 3months of winter here for and sometimes in between on a good day for which I am planning to ride. And the road conditions mostly are for slow rides and can be sometimes bumpy and you can be ' offroad' without any ⚠️. I know how to ride as I did in my early youth days (now I m middle aged) and I'm considering to get one and don't know how and when I will use it. Just want to ride for the feel of it. One thing I would like to know from you passionate riders as this might help me make a decision, why is riding a bike better than driving a car , especially on long tours because I wonder why the people who get a touring bike, don't get a car instead and be comfortable with all the things they want in the bike already there in even an average car . Please reply. Thank you. P.s . In India mostly there is a perception that people who canot afford a car , buy a motorcycle and people who cannot afford a motorcycle get a cycle etc.

Thanks for your comment . Motorcycles give you a sense of freedom that you don’t get with a car. You aren’t affected by traffic jams so much, and they are more economical to run. And they are cool 👍🏼👍🏼

Leave the exhausts as l am afriad more laws will be incoming and they are very different.
@MaaZeus
@MaaZeus 2 жыл бұрын
And stupid laws like that should be actively rebelled against. It is a massive over reach when they start to prevent you modding something YOU OWN but is not a direct hazard to anyone else and a danger in traffic. Anywho, obnoxiously loud pipes are bad but so are overly dampened ones. It is quite discouraging when you have a big bike and a big exhaust but the sound is equivalent to a sewing machine with a bunny fart undertones. So far from what I have heard even today Triumph makes good sounding exhausts STOCK. Better with an aftermarket of course but still good when left stock so it is not like the current emissions and noise pollution laws are to blame. Most bikes today simply come with a badly designed, overly neutered exhaust. You would not get such an exhaust if you were to buy a Ferrari or Lamborghini even though they fall under the same noise pollution laws, they understand the beautiful song of the engine is a big part of the driving experience.

Reconstruct the front / drive of your old farmhouse. It was ok for a tractor and horse and cart before that...before that a chariot with rotating knives? Use concrete, chippings, recycled brick. If that was my place I would build a retaining wall and then a levelling deck. As I'm more Aussie than I am Welsh, I would build a verandah as well. Plan as you approach, and turn it around while still mobile. If you have a flat garage there are trolleys that lift and rotate the machine. Convert the Harleys starter motor....somehow... to engage when in reverse and without a spark.

I get the appeal of cruisers from the point of view of big torque and more relaxed riding, but the whole Harley / Hog / ape hangars thing turns me right off. I have ridden a Fat Bob, but to be honest the apes and loud pipes made me feel a bit of an idiot riding it through Swindon. And the “ culture” around it makes me cringe a bit. Just me. Everyone’s different and at the end of the day we are all riders. Equally, I’m not keen on dressing up like a power ranger and riding a sports bike with my arse in the air either. Respect to all riders !

You two are spot on in every point you make. Cruisers are it for me, especially in my 60’s. And I thought about changing out my new Speedmaster’s stock pipes, but I like the sound as is, and don’t think V&H slips ons will make that much of a difference. I also like the look of those stock BMW pipes, so it really depends on whether you like that stock sound. Mr. Darcy’s Harley sounds sweet - not too loud, but a nice grumble.
