Probably never has there been a greater tribute. No cheesy sentimentality, no kitsch. It is poignant, simple and powerful.... RIP John.... the world needs your message more than ever........

What a song!! I saw this man perform this song in Chicago Il, back in the mid 80's ( 83-84?), I believe ( if I'm not mistaken ) @ the Rosemont, and he had to give it an extended bridge ( quite a long piano solo ) to regain his composure. He was crying and his voice was shaking. It was BY FAR one of the most INTENSE situations I've ever seen on a stage. ANY STAGE!! Now, intense is not normally a word that is used to describe Elton John but if you was there, than you know this man has an inner INTENSITY that burns when let loose.. Hats off to you Mr. John.. Forever the man, Forever the Fan!!

How the time just flies by. I remember when this song was released. I also remember watching that Monday night football game when they announced Lennon being murdered. I was only 6 in 1980 but i remember my father being very sad. He had to leave the house and go for a walk. He didn't come back for a couple hours and he came up to me and said hey son, I love you!

This song wasn't just written for John Lennon. It was written for my mum.she could turn a filtering plant into a fruitful forest. She died in a car crash at 59 years old. Way too soon. She was my best friend, she was my dads highschool sweetheart, she was a wonderful grandmother, best friend to many and loved by many far and wide. We played this song, alongside a video/photo collection from her child hood to weeks her life just before she left us. This song was the perfect song for her and Thankyou Elton for writing it for your friend and my mum 💜

I think this is the best of the John Lennon tribute songs. Paul Simon did one (something about the late great Johnny Ace) and George Harrison did one All Those Years Ago (I'm sure both songs were heart felt). I feel Elton'e song expressed the loss he and many others felt better than the other songs.

What happened here, As the New York sunset disappeared? I found an empty garden among the flagstones there. Who lived here? He must have been a gardener that cared a lot, Who weeded out the tears and grew a good crop. And now it all looks strange. It's funny how one insect can damage so much grain. And what's it for, This little empty garden by the brownstone door? And in the cracks along the sidewalk nothing grows no more. Who lived here? He must have been a gardener that cared a lot, Who weeded out the tears and grew a good crop. And we are so amazed! We're crippled and we're dazed.... A gardener like that one, no one can replace. And I've been knocking, but no one answers. And I've been knocking, most all the day. Oh and I've been calling, oh hey, hey, Johnny! Can't you come out to play? And through their tears, Some say he farmed his best in younger years. But he'd have said that roots grow stronger, if only he could hear. Who lived there? He must have been a gardener that cared a lot, Who weeded out the tears and grew a good crop. Now we pray for rain, and with every drop that falls..... We hear, we hear your name..... And I've been knocking, but no one answers. And I've been knocking, most all the day. Oh and I've been calling, oh hey, hey, Johnny! Can't you come out to play, In your empty garden? Johnny? Can't you come out to play, in your empty garden?

Welsh TourDrivenGolfer Hey your right. Just looked up the set list, and I remember Quarterflash opening for him. June 27th 1982. The Elton concert caused my girlfriend to break up with me at a Missing Person's concert at Magic Mountain. LOL Long Story- , And Elton was so high on coke, and all the songs, even the slower one's were sped up. Which sucked. He came out dressed as a military looking general in drag. SETLIST Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding All the Girls Love Alice Someone Saved My Life Tonight Better Off Dead Ball and Chain Empty Garden (Hey Hey Johnny) Goodbye Yellow Brick Road The Bitch Is Back Pinball Wizard (The Who cover) Ticking Elton's Song Chloe Where to Now St. Peter? If you read a detailed narrative (such as Wikipedia's "Death of John Lennon" article), it is SO heartbreaking. He was only there at the Dakota because he wanted to say goodnight to his son Sean in person, instead of going straight from the studio to a restaurant. The first time Chapman approached John, John signed an album cover for him and asked "Is this all you want?" As if he was inviting Chapman to have a conversation or ask questions or something. He was used to fans hanging out in front of the building all the time, but by all accounts he was nice to them, and they were nice to him. John Lennon was a strong man who beat heroin addiction, who won his wife back from a separation, and made time for Sean more than anyone else. Even when Paul McCartney would show up, unscheduled, with a guitar, John would say he was busy with Sean and asked Paul to please start calling ahead of time instead of just showing up. Imagine that: Being too busy to play with Paul McCartney. Your child being more important than the partner who helped you become rich and famous. He was a good man in his last few years, by _any_definition! And that crazy fucking coward didn't even have the balls to shoot him face to face! He fired four bullets into him from behind! And then he blamed one of the greatest novels of all time for his stupid fucking murder! Catcher in the Rye is _essential_ reading and a pure pleasure!

@jeffadams21348 жыл бұрын
Well said, Ben.
@BenCulture8 жыл бұрын
I didn't say that, Jerry. The younger John Lennon was worse than just a bad parent to Julian. He was a bad husband to Cynthia, and an overall bully, as well. I said "He was a good man in his last few years". The phenomenon in which a rock star's first set of wife and kids get neglected and screwed over is not unique to John Lennon. Virtually every man who becomes mega-famous neglects his current wife and children. All four members of Pink Floyd have admitted to this, as has Ric Ocasek of the Cars, who has had three marriages and six kids. You can't work obsessively towards mainstream stardom while simultaneously providing quality time. One thing or the other will go neglected. Just a sad fact. Is a man a "piece of shit" for being highly ambitious? Julian did get particularly screwed, though, no denying.
