You can make candle clay pot heaters. Just be careful, but them on a metal tray and make sure they aren't close to or under anything. The paraffin wax could catch fire and leak out. Take a few precautions. You can probably get a similar result from stacking a few bricks over a candle. It's very efficient and economical. Look it up on YT.

Like your video.....pretty cool. I have a (prepper friend) who likes this stuff and I had suggested that he use all the shredded paper he got from work (4 shredders there) as there seemed to be a endless supply of it. He has a second lawn mower that he never uses - places it on the outdoor table and lets the vacuum of the mower pull it up underneath into the blades - cutting the strips yet finer, then into the large grass catcher all neat & sweet! I do like the saw blade idea on final mulching - he uses a paint stir that hooks too the drill but puts an edge on one side of each prop blades with his grinder to get the cutting done. He is using some old bread loaf pans to form the bricks/logs - I believe he uses the smaller loaf pan size for a portable tent stove that does not take standard firewood sizes. He was using 4" PVC tubes cut at 14" for the first run...hope that help someone out there.

Magazines, junk mail and colored gift-wrapping paper may seem like harmless items to burn. Only use plain newspaper or uncoated paper in your fireplace, and use it sparingly. While you should generally not burn paper, it is acceptable to use a small amount of tightly rolled, plain black-and-white newspaper as kindling. Make sure to place it between small bits of wood and avoid any paper with colors or gloss. But the ink printed on the paper releases toxic fumes when burned.

I picked this up in another video. I welded a 7 in saw blade on a 3/8 in rod and use that to grind things up. I made a press like your buckets, but I use a 4 in pvc pipe with holes drilled into the side and built a fence around it. Got tired of having to clean the pulp off my shoes. My press is a ladder type with 2x4's as the rungs with spaces in between at 1 5/8 inches, so I can use a 2x4 to press a plunder down on the pulp and squeeze out the water. After drying the finished logs don't burn well, they just smolder. Put some kerosene on them and they're good fire starters. The pulp log gets pushed out between 2 large blocks of wood and set somewhere to dry out. Next time I do this I'll throw in sawdust and see how that works. Thank you for the idea! (sawdust)

This is perfect 👍 And if there are children in the house, or grandparents, they can help too. You can set up the steps into "stations". Each step, or station has one of the children or grandparent doing their part and that way you're not doing every log all by yourself. Perhaps the adult does the " mixing" step of course, because that part requires an adult, at least if using a saw blade mixer 😉, But the children could cut the paper with scissors, little children love cutting, also it would give grandparents a good feeling to help be a part at that station too. And at the molding station, children can mold the logs into bread tin molds, and children can add the water, yes, it can a become a fun family affair with stations and each person take pride in their part of log making and stock piling. * Also, Have the grandparents save their paper trash and bring it over so you all have even more logs to make! 👍🙂

He has shown us the simplest instructions with the least tools. Like any recipe, give it your own twist. Thank you for sharing this as I have heard various versions but they seemed complicated. Single mother to a disabled son so it's all on me. And simple is better. Although the dryer lint someone recommended adding is terrific because I don't have ample sawdust laying around. Would a little starter fluid sprayed on them as they dry be a bad idea? Too much flame possibly? Well anyway, thanks again
@MonicaMuses-MySync2 жыл бұрын
Maybe a combo rolled paper (with dryer lint, loose threads or fabric scraps, and bit of used candle wax or used kitchen oil) "wick" inserted in one end, with a screwdriver or something, to start the process easily? All basically free! Use what you have! Add another twist ot two, from the comment section. :) I, personally, would not want to add the lighter fluid. Just a thought. I actually have shredded paper I use for my critters and for compost (gathered from friends and family recycling), so I like this fire-brick idea for the excess I usually manage to have!

@ryanfree98613 жыл бұрын
Fireplaces aren't very efficient. They use heated air from the house to burn and will drop the temperature of outer rooms drawing in cold air. Consider investing in a wood burning stove with an outside air intake for the firebox air. You will literally burn 300% more wood in a fireplace than a stove for the same amount of heat!

You should build yourself a small mold that you can put that pulp into and compress it to make them tighter and dry faster. Make it so you can use a clamp to smash down on it. Then, after they dry, you can stack them neatly. Stack all summer, burn all winter. Also, if you start running out of pulp...subscribe to a few free newsletters. Just use some scrap 2×4 pieces and make a rectangle. Add a bottom then put the wet paper into the little mold. Take another scrap piece lay it on top and use some clamps to squish it down and drain the water. I would drill some holes into the bottom and side like he did the bucket so water can drain out. Then take it and set the paper log out for the brick to dry. Easy peasy. No need to buy a bunch of crap.

We shred all of our junk mail too. Plus the accumulation of old financial records ends up in the shredder. In a years time the shredded mass fills a 55 gallon drum. I used to just toss a shovel full of shreds every so often into the wood stove but it always roared and spiked the flue temp. Now if I were to spend a little time, like this guy did, I could have a small stack of slow burning fire logs. I think it’s worth a try.

Then I pour into another bucket with holes and screen wire on the out side. Then place another bucket filled with sand and push down as far as possible. Leave the weighted bucket on top mix more and repeat. When full carefully dump the contents and cut into two or 4 pieces and let dry. The finished products looks like half or a quarter log. When these dry they burn fine.

If you check Craigslist...especially after big storms, there's usually people offering free wood if you cut up their fallen trees and haul it away. It's free, you get a workout and less time consuming.
@Geonious5 жыл бұрын
The alternative is to buy wood from someone. In my area a cord of cut, split, seasoned hardwood averages $200 a cord. Most case you have to load and haul the wood or pay extra for delivery. A 1000 sq ft house will average 3-4 cords during winter ($600-$800 a year). So a one time investment for a good chainsaw, some chain oil, gas (for your truck and chainsaw), and your time and elbow grease will pay dividends as time goes on. As Greg Williams said, there's many places that offer free wood after storms during spring and summer. And, if you get lucky, you can find free wood already cut in log size pieces. You just haul it and split it.
@belavet5 жыл бұрын
I disagree on a few points. Less time consuming... how long does it takes you to drive to the location, saw up the logs into manageable sizes, then split and stack the wood. I am guessing hours, at the very least. Most of this wood also needs to season for a good 6-12 months before it is appropriate for use and to eliminate creosote. Hauling... this assumes you even have a truck or vehicle big enough to haul said wood. You could spend as little as 1-2 minutes a log here if you managed time better. And can make multiple logs at once if you have enough buckets.
@belavet5 жыл бұрын
@@Geonious the greater overall point is time investment ... the claim is cutting your own wood takes less time. As someone who has hauled and split wood, I just don't see it. I would break that tree manageable parts, load it, haul it, unload it, chop it, stack it, allow it to season... of course you know all this. Meanwhile this junk mail takes a few minutes (of actual labor and not just waiting) per "log". Keep in mind that the vehicle itself is an expense too. If you already have a truck, great. For the majority of people who do not, they can either choose to stuff logs into their sedan and blow their suspension, spend money on a truck (which is probably not a bad idea for other reasons too), or simply forego the "free" wood.
@Geonious5 жыл бұрын
@@belavet It all depends on the person. Some people really like the whole experience of cutting, splitting, and stacking wood. Others, would rather pay extra and have it delivered at their door step. Others people use alternative heating sources (gas, electric, solar, etc...). I use propane but I do have a fire pit outside. Because I don't have a need for specific species of wood (hardwood vs softwood) I look for these "free" wood offerings on Craigslist because I can't justify spending $200 on a cord of season hardwood that doesn't serve any purpose besides looking nice. And since it's an outside fire pit I can burn pine without the fear of a chimney fire. I can easily find free pine offered on CL because most people don't want to burn it inside. A cord of wood lasts me 2-3yrs. I put in a weekend of work and I'm set for a few years. The moral of the story is, nothing is for free. You either pay with greenbacks or time and labor.
@belavet5 жыл бұрын
@@Geonious I don't disagree. But the point of contention was that picking up free wood is a net time savings, hence my response.

Had one of those in the 1990's. It rolled the papers nicely, then it said tie it with twine. The fire ate the twine, the log "unrolled" and snuffed the fire. Then wouldn't light again. Might as well just stack the newspaper, works just as well as rolling it.
