A capacitor bank "battery" was commercially sold in the US to work as the 4th battery in conjunction with another 3 normal lead/acid truck battery. the idea being that the trucks charging system and 3 normal batteries kept the capacitor bank "battery" charged and it alone did the cranking of the engine on start up. That way the capacitors do all the hard work cranking. This is very useful in below freezing temperatures when a chemical battery is sluggish due to low temperatures. Capacitors are unaffected and can improve starting while also saving the normal batteries from being damaged.

Running 300 amps though a poor contact will most certainly create a significant voltage drop. if your car is cutting out because of a voltage drop in the contacts, then it wont make a difference with a larger capacitor bank. Even a brand new lead acid battery will fail to start a car if the contacts are making a poor connection.

It doesn’t work that way if you try to make electric at Hoover dam with a drain off garden hose to generator doesn’t mean you don’t have enough water but you don’t have big enough Flow of water Use tiny wire tiny Alligator clamps thin Circuit board But it fun to watch some thing like this when he think l’m smart But good concept ( You know ) duh

If the circuit board, the two cables connecting the circuit board to the battery & the alligator clips get hot after cranking the engine car, they are small enough to handle the amount of current required by the starter motor. In my opinion, the capacitor pack is not be used alone in cranking the engine. It is to be used only when the lead-acid battery power can no longer crank the engine by itself. Then this is the time to use the capacitor pack by connecting parallel (+ wire to the + terminal & - wire to - terminal of capacitor pack & battery, respecrively) with car battery without disconnecting any of the battery terminals. Like using a battery charger with jump starting capacity/mode or from other fully-charged battery connected in parallel with the discharged battery of the car.

Hi Mr. Electron, The wires you used were quite thin and the circuit board on the supercapacitor bank also offers a lot of resistance. Thus there was a lot of power loss in that process. Please try to use thicker wires. And also use a supercapacitor without the circuit board.

At 12:00 removing the positive is not as good as an idea. Always prefer to disconnect the negative firstly so that the chassis is no longer conductive.

Could those caps carry that starter that long and strong ? I would think it should last 1 to 2 secs at best ...

The voltage of starting motor is 12.5V and the current of starting mostly is as high as 200 A-400A, (peak 400-700, depend on the number of cylinders, working current at least 200 A). 12.5/200=62.5 mohm. Thus the ESR of these capacitors must be less than 10 mohm(optimum). In fact, the ESR of those capacitors vary from 4-50 mohm ( depend on the brands). Furthermore, the gauge of your jumper cable is too thin and it can not support such current. Try to connect two series of the circuit in parallel and change cables at least 4 gauge (21 mm2 or D 5.5 mm) copper wire.

Capacitor in series is 1/(1/c1+1/c2 )so its 500/6 83.3f and considering the voltage drop and lower limit to 11 volt from 15v to 11 volt you can draw power which is again brings down your overall power

In this case I think the main fault is in the union of the terminals. Two small alligators do not allow the passage of so much current and the voltage drops

Pro tip, consider increasing the amperage of your capacitor bank to match the car battery current. Most likely this is how it should be 12V × 50A = 600W

That capacitor protection circuit seems to be limiting the surge powerflow. Ditch them and try.

The capacitors connected with a 5 to 8 amps load wire, but car starter takes above 10 amps load. Thats way the starter terminal wires fitted in car are hevy wires.

Make proper contact with terminal for maximum current i have used this capacitor bank to start a car with low battery and it started flawlessly no troubles u can use it as bank to start car with low battery or a capacitor and lead battery hybrid in cold weather...

sloppy work and dangerous for amperage of this kind. start off by making the electrical conections on thise alligator clips mor.e solid. at least run a longer wire though a clip hole then crimp the clip over the wire before putting on its cover.

Total capacitance add in series by 1/(1/c1 + 1/c2 +1/c3 + 1/c4 + 1/c5 + 1/c6). if all capacitors are 500 farad capacitors, then your capacitor bank's total capacitance is 1/(6/500) = 500/6 = 83.33 farads. Six 3600 farads capacitors in series will give you 3600/6 = 600 farads.

@@jaffersadhik1923 Please reread what I said in my original comment. The second example stated, six 3600 Farad capacitors in series is 600 Farads. Let's work that out.... 1/(1/3600+1/3600+1/3600+1/3600+1/3600+1/3600) reduces to 1/(6/3600). That can be reduced again to 1/(1/600), and the reciprocal of 1/600 is 600. More appropriately, six 3600F caps in series = 600F On the other hand, my first example in my original comment used what he used, six 500F capacitors, and that works out to 1/(6/500F) = 500F/6 = 83.33F. Unsurprisingly, you and I are both in agreement that adding six 500 caps in series is 83.33F. Because that's what the math says. And, my second example in my original comment is just extra credit.

Dear sir, great video. After watching this, I purchased 6 pieces of Supercaps (4 terminals type) 3V 500F each and connected in Series. I removed the battery terminals and connected the vehicle's (bike) positive-negative to my supercapacitor assembly's, the starter motor is not cranking. Please help.

Yheap it works, but... Your capacitor bank is too small to maintain the voltage, after 5 drill running the voltage goes from 14.4 v to 12.2v... Capacitors supports to discharge themselves very quickly, that's not the case of battery, so : When you start a motor the max power consumption is needed to load the rotation, that could destroy a small 12 v battery like them you could found on motocycles, but... If you make a simple circuit with 12 v Battery then power bank capacitor then the inverter, this will be more safety First the capacitors will discharge themselves quickly, but the battery will charge them behind, the voltage of the circuit will be more stable, and the peak power will be absorb by the specific way of working of the capacitors ;-) They are made for this, this solution will permit you to use powerful motors that couldn't be started by the 12v battery without damaging it

-careful handling that many amps with both hands like that, if that kind of current passes through your heart it can kill you. i know its only 14.8v but capacitors have such a huge output that it could still pass through reasonably easily.- nvm im dumb i looked it up youre fine lol also try starting your car with jumpstarting cables. starters need LOTS of amps, somewhere north of 350a. once i was helping two people jump start a car and the ground terminal on the car we were starting was hard to reach. we tried hooking up the ground to some metal on the car and we would see some small sparks going through but the car wouldnt crank. it was only once i got the clip to fit (it was tough) that the car could get enough amps to start.

6x300F caps start car starters with no problem and it will crank for 30 seconds after as well. 6x500F caps you have will too do even more. Your connection were NOT correctly attached.

13:28 what you hear, that ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta is from the starter motor, from what is called "bendix mechanism or drive" who aproaches starter motor gear to flywheel motor gear, if it doesn´t have enough voltage, it makes that sound, because inside of "bendix mechanism" most cars have two coils or solenoids, one to make jump the mechanism and other to retain that mechanim in is place while ICE is starting (or can be donde with just 1 coil) but is the same noise, ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta because there is not enough voltage, apart of enough ampers to drive the electric motor. Have you update the ultracapacitors and did you started the car well? Thanks you.

2-3 minutes, only, because 2.7 volts 500F supercapacitor has only 0.375 AH, so, it can only provide you 2-3 min. of 100watts load

Capacitors don't store a lot of energy. It would take a huge capacitor bank to be able to run an e-bike for more than a few minutes.

You have conected the "battery" directly to inverter because of "high" current of 6-7A of the grinder machine, but at the same time you are trying to power a several hundred amps of starting motor using the same thin wires, that failed with the grinder! Are you nuts???

it should be used to start the engine...... you have to add more big cable to 10 mm². 500F has 6000 Coloumb......if it is used of 300 Amp to start the engine.... so ..... only need 20 second to be empty......

you only have 83 farads at 12V here. connecting caps in series lowers the capacitance. 500 / 6 = 83.3333

No disrespect but those caps are 500F at 2.7v. "Series" ADDs VOLTAGES (6 X 2.7V = 16.2v tolerant) and CAPACITY is the SAME as a SINGLE CAP. i.e. 500F. But in "parallel", VOLTAGE is 2.7v tolerant and CAPACITY is ADDITIVE (6 X 500F = 3000F). Yes? Please correct me if incorrect. Cheers Dr. Love :)

@@ovalwingnut I think you are incorrect. Capacity in series is measured by dividing the capacitance of smallest capacitor by how many you have connected in the circuit. Just like you connect 3 1.5 v batteries 1 battery is 1000mah, second battery is 2000mah and third is 3000mah. Since each battery is drained at the same rate voltage of each battery will drop as usage increases. in series will give you 4.5 v to start but capacity at 4.5 volts will be 1/3 of the capacity of the smallest battery if you care about getting constant 4.5 volts. Of course you can get higher capacity if you do not care that the voltage drops below 4.5 volts. So in this example your capacity at 4.5 volts is 333.33333 mah.

@@ovalwingnut actually I made a mistake. The lowest capacitance of the capacitors is divided by how many you have to get the capacity of the series circuit at rated voltage of the capacitors. For example I have 6 3000F capacitors and each is rated at 3V in series they can handle a total of 18 volts with a capacitance of 500F. This is how someone explained this to me. In a parallel circuit I would have 18000F but only 3V.

So frustrating. We want to know if the SuperCapacitor is worth its weight and size, on something practical. Like converting the charge from going downhil to climbing the next hill in eBike. Or to drill some holes. How many holes? you stop that three and say "1st hole" pause.. grrrr we can see that... my guess is that noone is going to buy the supercapacitor, for any practical use... Sigh.. i still dont know if its usefull to study for an ebike application like reGenerative braking.
