Thank you so much for uploading these videos I didn't understand anything in chemistry until I started watching your videos, you are so good at making concepts in chemistry that were difficult for me to understand into something very easy. I really wish you were my class teacher unfortunately I a stuck with a teacher who was an Oxford graduate ,who can't seem to let those Oxford glory days go... like if you have a teacher similar to this : someone who just likes knowing they are smarter than the whole class and constantly making sarcastic comments and when the whole 2 chemistry classes do terribly multiple times not being able to realise she is the problem.

Hi, I spotted a mistake when talking about the ez higher priority elements, it's the atomic number you need to take into consideration not the mass number of the element.

at 8:53, why do you write one ethyl group as H3C and one as CH3? Why not just write both out as CH3?

Because then it makes it look like the hydrogen is attached to the carbon instead, which you could lose marks for in the exam x

@angelf7222 жыл бұрын
I'm late but for the last question, isn't there two of the same groups?? CIP system isn't needed?? So off the two carbons on the double bond, one has hydrogen and CH3, the other has CH3 and C2H5. Each has two different groups, so this is Z isomer, as the same CH3 groups are on the same side..? So the correct answer would be if CH3 was in the opposite side?

why does But-2-ene have e-z isomerism because i thought that the CH3 was part of the chain and so not classed as a separate group? I have my exam tomorrow and I'm really confused about isomerism!!
@JazzyBee1538 жыл бұрын
sorry if this is too late. When you're drawing E/Z isomers you just draw the double bond out fully. Then the structural formula for either side of the double bond. So if the CH3s are both on the top/on the bottom its Z, if theyre diagonal to each other its E :)
@MrERintoul8 жыл бұрын
What Jasmine said! The alkyl groups ARE part of the chain and they are named as such. However, it is their attachment to the C=C that governs E or Z isomerism.

What is the two substituents with the highest atomic number were on the same carbon? Do you still find the group on each carbon with the highest atomic number or would it not be a stereoisomerism.
@tanzeelahmadhashmi62098 жыл бұрын
thanks for the video I really understand it now but I've got a question; Can you have E-Z isomerism in pentene when there is a methyl group on one side and 2 methyl groups on the other?
@MrERintoul8 жыл бұрын
+Tanzeel Ahmed Hashmi I'm not sure that what you have described would be pentene... Do you mean methylbutene? Either way, in a situation where you have one methyl on one side (with a hydrogen atom also attached to the carbon of the double bond) and then two methyl groups attached to the other carbon atom, you cannot have E-Z isomerism. No matter how you switch the groups around, the molecule will always be the same. You get me?
@tanzeelahmadhashmi62098 жыл бұрын
+E Rintoul oh yea I'm sorry I meant methylebutene and thank you so much I got it and understand it now! :-)
@mubss93459 жыл бұрын
why do you separate the isomers horizontally then vertically that is the only thing that confused me
@MrERintoul9 жыл бұрын
+Mubs S You need to look at priority on each side of the molecule, hence me saying to think of them as left and right. BUT, the actual EZ notation comes from looking at where the highest priorities lie, hence me talking about looking at it horizontally!

Eric, can you reply me with a place for purely organic chemistry past paper questions if you know of any? Had a mock today - Got 34/78.... Been watching your videos and I just cannot believe the difficulty of my AS-Level test today. The polymer section, the mechanisms of Alcohols as well... Even simple parts like naming compounds but the problem was that, they were in the format of say, CH3CH2(CH3)2CCH???... etc which confused me

Thank you, I really find the questions helpful.
@pierrekostanteen46856 жыл бұрын
Shouldn't you be considering the atomic number not the atomic mass when assigning C.I.P priority ? Although it doesn't make a difference when working out the form of isomerism as long as your consistent but when attempting written answers you shouldn't mention relative atomic mass you should mention assigning property via atomic number.

what if some1 wants to retake chem1,2,4,5 exams in 2016 will they be able to or not?
@MrERintoul9 жыл бұрын
+NirajC72 This is a cracking question. First off, units 4 and 5 will be there, as the June 2016 series will be the last so that's not an issue. But, there is a potential problem with resitting the AS units as by that point, there will be a new specification. I think that AQA will make another paper each for Units 1 and 2 for those who wish to resit...
