I completed my gearbox rebuild over the Summer (2023) and it is now back in the car. Having watched you struggle to tighten the big nuts I decided to screw a wooden block just above my workbench and do the job at waist height - much easier! Also, I have stopped using Hylomar Blue on my gaskets (too messy). I now use Loctite 3020 on low-risk gaskets and Delta D203 RTV for gaskets that are at a high risk of leaking (like the timing chain cover for example). Gearbox no longer crunches when changing down to 2nd and so far it isn't leaking.

why are those two large nuts torqued up so tight I would have thought it would be enough to maybe 120 foot lbs and then the lock tab.. what do you gain by massivly tightening up these nuts so much

Interesting video - thanks! How did you decide which parts to renew when you were doing this job? What was wrong with the gearbox that caused you to consider a rebuild? I am planning to tackle one of mine this year when the weather warms up as it has an issue with the synchromesh when changing down into 2nd gear.

Thanks for your kind comments! as for why i rebuilt the gearbox it was mainly because it was of an "unknown mechanical condition" and because i had stripped the engine it seemed daft not to refresh the gearbox. (it also leaked oil) i also enjoy doing things like that!

@@mrfid72 Thanks. Where did you source the replacement parts from? Do you have the gearbox back in the car or is this something for later in the year?

@@grahamwoodier5066 Most of the parts came from mini sport, they do a gearbox rebuild kit for £276, if you go via Guessworks then its a lot more expensive. The engine/gearbox has all been built back up but i have still got to rebuild the front of the mini so it will stay as it is for the time. I want to keep the front subframe bear so i can bolt it back and help to align the front panel etc.
