I FINALLY watch THE LAST SAMURAI (2003) for the FIRST TIME! 🔥
------------------------------------
Movie Summary:
Capt. Nathan Algren (Tom Cruise) is an American military officer hired by the Emperor of Japan to train the country's first army in the art of modern warfare. As the government attempts to eradicate the ancient Samurai warrior class in preparation for more Westernized and trade-friendly policies, Algren finds himself unexpectedly affected by his encounters with the Samurai, which places him at the center of a struggle between two eras and two worlds.

Loosely based on a true story. TC spent nearly a year preparing for this role. A lot of people think that TC is The Last Samurai because he survived...he's not, it's Katsumoto.

While many people who know the culture of samurai well will tell you that there were alot of things inaccurate about this movie, they will also tell you they still appreciate this movie as it is the best movie ever in terms of honoring the samurai and what they stood for. Personally my favorite as well!

So glad you watched this, as I said before this is my favorite movie of all time. Words can't explain how much this movie means to me. It's completely different from any movie I've seen, it's my comfort, my motivation and "religion". It tells me what's important in life, the thing that no matter what you can't give up in life even though there are many bad people and life is messed up sometimes... most importantly you should never forget your honour. Soundtrack here is... masterpiece. Hans Zimmer is my favorite composer and that's not surprising. That man is a legend and I'm so happy that he is part of my favorite movie. I've watched this movie like 5-10 times, maybe even more, same emotions every time. I like Tom Cruise but to me this is the most different movie he has done, it truly shows his acting skills and I loved it. Don't get me wrong he is great in other movies but most of the time its action movies without that much acting. This is definitely his best movie to me. To answer your question, yes, he did his stunts as always in this movie too. Also, the first time I watched it I thought Nathan was the last Samurai too but then... after watching couple times, the last Samurai is Katsumoto and Nathan tells his story. I have to add 1 more thing: I thought it would be better if Nathan died at first but then I realized, if he died nobody would be able to tell Katsumoto's story. Nathan got really close with Katsumoto and he was probably the only person who could tell his story that way, also what makes it even more impactful is how Katsumoto acted towards him, took care of him, made a true warrior out of him... Yes, those soldiers could've told the story of how Samurai fell but not how they lived and what they did. I will miss... our conversations...

The emperor was still a kid in the early part of the movie. In the ending scene, it shows that he aged which indicates that Tom stayed in the village for years. The movie also portrays that the emperor has matured; far wiser than before.

Tom Cruise's character is not the last samurai. The title " The Last Samurai" is plural and is about the last samurai warriors who wanted to preserve the old ways and resisted the modernization of Japan (which has happened in real life, even though most of this movie is fiction). Just thought you might wanna know. 😁 Good reaction 👍

the alternative ending you`re looking for "is" the ending. The narrator says that Nathan may have died from his wounds, no one knows, but that he would like to believe Nathan found peace. The narrator is a writer that even romanticizes scalping, so it would stand to reason he prefers the satisfying ending you`d find in a book, instead of the harshness of reality. The audience gets to choose to be comforted or realistic. Its a great ending and one of TCs best movies.

Common mistake: Tom Cruise is NOT the last samurai. Ken Watanabe is the last samurai; Tom Cruise is the last warrior left that understood him, and told his tale to the Emperor, so that the ways of the samurai would be immortalized in Japanese culture through his sacrifice.

This movie is fiction but it's inspired by real events (not based, just inspired)... they added an "american captain" because Hollywood... but that's how we can witness this story, through his eyes, so I think it's ok. The character Katsumoto is based on a samurai called Saigo, his rebellion was known as the Satsuma Rebellion and the last battle where they all died was the Battle of Shiroyama. This battle was pretty much like in the movie, 500 samurai against the Imperial Army, the difference was 60 to 1. First there was a huge combat, a big massacre, and finally the last charge of the remaining 40 samurai who ended up dying under a rain of bullets. This was the end of the samurai and people start calling Saigo "The Last Samurai". Really great movie, in my opinion this is the best Tom Cruise film. P. S. There is a band called Sabaton they have a song about this historical events, the song is called "Shiroyama", maybe if you're interested you can listen to it.

I think I've watched just about every reaction to this movie that's out there, and yours just went right to the top. I've seen some really good reactions, and others that were literally unwatchable due to the ignorance of the reactor (intentional or otherwise). I'm an American, but my heritage is Japanese, so I know that there are certain aspects and nuances of the culture which can be enigmatic to someone who isn't familiar with them. So first of all, kudos to Mr. Cruise and Mr. Zwick for capturing so much of that essence! And secondly, a huge thumbs up to you for picking up on it. You "got it" 100% in my opinion. (Maybe it was that sword you were holding?!😉) But I don't think I've heard any other reactor wonder, are they going to be OK with Nathan wearing the red armor at the end. Very well done!

To respond to all your questions x) : - I've never been in Japan yet, but I'm acutally going to in may 2024, really excited about it. - In my movie ranking, probably not in my top 10 since I've seen a freaking lot of movies, but still maybe in my top 20-30. For movies with Tom Cruise? This is my favorite. - I have 5 katanas, 3 swords, 1 short-sword, and 4 daggers. And I plan to have a lot more in the future XD (And I also have a cosplay Dane axe, which is double-handed in case you don't know. I would love sooo much to have a real one, big fan of the vikings). - And I think that you can partly shape your destiny, but that some parameters are out of your control (Like where you were born, the education you received, the skills that you can acquire or not even with work, etc. Or even things that you absolutely can't predict and avoid, like an accident for exemple).

I'll just respond as I go through the video😂 While on set, Cruise is known for being laid back at times and very intense at other times. While some see this as just his passion for the movie, and that's likely true, I can also definitely understand why that would be intimidating to be around lol. I'd probably be scared too if he lost his cool and yelled at me on the spot for not doing something the way he wanted it on the set. The only ones not intimidated by it are the other actors, directors, etc, who aren't at any real risk by his anger. So basically, he's chill most of the time, but his mood can switch in an instant, which would be very intimidating to be around all day

Its my fav movie of all time. I have seen it many times. Fyi: Samurai is also in plural. So either its Katsumoto thats the last Samurai or its all of them. No the whole point of the ending is "(he) found some small meassure of peace, that we all seek, but few of us ever find". You cant take that line out. Btw Cruise is regarded as the hardest working actor on sets in Hollywood. And he expects the same commitment from everyone involved. Now thats said there is only 1 actress thats said something negative about him and thats that girl from MI2 (dont remember her name). Everyone Else absolutely loves him and cant say enough good things. Just look at Henry Cavill, Simon Pegg etc of what they have said about him. And even Matt Damon that havent worked with him but of course have met him. *destiny: no, look at the definition. Its a reason its called destiny. I tell you, you cant change it. I think it is as Nathan sais it, you do what you do until your destiny is revealed.

I've seen this movie thousands of times and it's probably top 7-10 for me, my favorite Tom Cruise movie the Samurai is considered the greatest warriors ever because there discipline and honor plus the Samurai sword is the sharpest sword ever made and the most durable also

This was a real period in Japan and many think it planted the seeds for WW2. They transitioned from warlords to an industrial nation with dreams of empire. Later they ocupied a cunk of China and wiped out two Russian fleets. The US stood in thier way for further expasion when they hit us on Dec. 7, 1941 in Pearl Harbour.

Your destiny is your destiny. It cannot be changed. You might think you can change it and you take a different path to make that change but in reality, that is exactly what you were supposed to do. Since none of us actually know what our destiny is, whatever you think it is, is most likely not what it is. You may think you are changing things, but you are actually taking more steps towards your destiny.

Say what you want to about Tom Criuse's personal life. But he is supremely dedicated to being the best he can possibly be at whatever he does. I have little doubt he is still excellent at anything he has ever learned just on his own principles. Kung Fu doesnt mean martial arts. It essentially means taking the time to perfect anything one does. Mr. Cruise is the embodiment of that idea.
