She sang it lying on her belly on the edge of the raised stage so that she was closer to the face level of the seated diners, pretty well as among them as possible. Such relaxed mastery of styling and intimacy of performance . . . man oh man, that was an initiation into that calibre of nightlife. Ah, Eartha, you brought us so much! Thank you! All these many years later it's still a clear memory, her lying there and warmly purring "I want to be evil, I want to be bad" to a captivated, entranced audience.
