In this tutorial I try to cover the Electrolyzer, this is a rather large topic and I try to cover as much of it as I can without letting the video run to long. Their are several designs and variants of O2 production out their are I try and cover the ones that I think are the most useful.

Thank you for the guide! I just managed to get my first hydrogen powerplant running, following the second (?) version you showed. However, I initially got oxygen mixed in with the hydrogen during the first run, which broke the generator. I tried creating vacum by running the lower pumps, but the oxygen levels shot right back up to 2k oxygen pressure when it reached sub 500. After a while I figured I could pop a gas-filter between the gas tank and the gas generator to filter out the oxygen. Eventually got the oxygen out of the top segment! Wow, that was a lot of text to say: I had a problem but I figured it out, thanks for the guide!

@LamontGranquist 3 жыл бұрын
For the full rodriguez, the second power transformer is useful to pull off normal wire and run off to your sieve and pump. It also seems to be useful to throw a switch in between that transformer and the two electrolyzers allowing manually shutting down half the electrolyzers if you've accidentally way overbuilt your oxygen generation capacity.

Forgive me, I’m new to the game. How do you combat eating through the maps water supply? Do geysers produce enough steam/water/ect. to keep up with demand for your base and this form of power generation?
@FrancisJohnYT
@FrancisJohnYT 4 жыл бұрын
This is not about power production this is about O2 production. The Hydrogen is technically a waste product it just so happens you can use it to provide power to run all your O2 production. Also wate vents on average produce about 2kg/s of water though it varies. So 2 water sources on a map is usually enough to support a massive base.

@@FrancisJohnYT In sandbox I found that you can cool a full Rodriguez with an AETN if you pre-chill the water. According to the min/max-theorycrafting in the wiki you shouldn't do that because of heat creation or something. But as you did in the video you can cool the oxygen within the SPOM with the water. And then the AETN can cope with the rest. To me it seem that running an aquatuner now and then to chill down a cool steam vent during eruption is much better than running it full time to cool the oxygen. Going to to that in my current game since I have the AETN and vent right next to each other :) Though a 3/4 Rodriguez may be enough for me

0:14 the mass ratio is actually correct, I just realized this after thinking it was wrong like you did for a long time. It's a mass ratio not a molecular mass ratio. 1H2O -> 0.5O2 + 1H2, O2 mol mass is ~ 32 g/mol, H2 mol mass is roughly 2 g/mol, so you'd expect 16g O2 per 2 g H2, or 8:1. ONI gives 888:112, which is pretty close. Very interesting, love this game and your content man

SPOM is even more complex. Different pump configurations can provide different H2/O2 ratios. Game mechanics for gas distribution sometimes transform some gas block to another gas type when gas block tries to move or expand. So there are cases when O2 block can turn H2.

The interesting thing is that if your willing to put in a bit more work on these designs, you can use your electrolyzer as a heat deletion system.While the oxygen will be hot and needs some work to get it from cooking your base, the Electrolyzer can match the steam turbine in terms of heat deletion. Though if using a Thermal Aquatuners is still required unless you just feeding it fresh made water from something that is very hot.Alternatively a AETN can be feed the surplus hydrogen for cooling instead.
@FrancisJohnYT
@FrancisJohnYT Жыл бұрын
There are a few niche ways to delete heat, you can also use plant to eat a bit of heat. Someone made a great one using pills on conveyor rails. Turns out at the time fridges dropped the temp of things really fast so pass the pills though one and you could demolish huge amounts of heat that way. The steam turbine ended up winning due to also being a power producer at the same time.

On the full Rodriguez, I keep getting Oxygen intermingled with the Hydrogen out of the top pump, which damages the generators. Sensor settings are correct (250g at top and 450g on bottom ones). My base is not using all the oxygen (overpressure at vents). Does this cause the problem? I built this with the hope that it would be more than I need, but could grow into it.
@FrancisJohnYT
@FrancisJohnYT 4 жыл бұрын
When you first switch it on you have to run it flat out for a good 300-600 seconds. That way the gasses sort themselves out, if you don't run it flat out the gasses stay intermingled and it never runs quite clean. If you build a couple some gas tanks or high pressure vents you can run it flat out and get it working clean.

my personal favourite way to create oxygen in oni the video i saw was made by brothgar i used the idea (cause i hâte morbs and making them produce oxygen for me sounds great) i tweaked it and made it more compact and gave it a counting system (using the new “single digit counters”) (the counters are activated by the pressure plate that opens the door on the dropping mechanism) and a made it so it won’t activate at night (i put the out house spawners next to each other/side by side) so they won’t interfere with each other (i believe i got the timings synced but i’m not sure) i’m pretty sure that there’s 44 morbs currently

The save game file is linked in the description if you what to have a look at it. But from the sounds of it you may not be running it flat out, you have to run it without letting the gas pipes back up for about half a cycle. This lets the hydrogen fill the top. You can either use high pressure gas vents or a couple of gas tanks to store the output.
@totally_not_a_troll
@totally_not_a_troll 5 жыл бұрын
TBH, my favorite "SPOM" design is: 1) Go to frost biome 2) Make it there 3) have hydrolyzer in middle and one pump above, one pump below 4) pipe goes from the top, around the room to the bot and out 5) bot pump has 5-ish bridges INTO that pipe (this makes it add all it's gases to existing gasses of the same type already in the pype 6) a single gas filter at the end ___________________________ This consumes the least energy, is much less labor intensive, produces almost the maximum possible output, is not prone to faults of any kind. Later you have to do the cool water trick though, frost biomes do melt :P
@FrancisJohnYT

No argument here, that is super handy. But maybe keep a few of the designs on file, some of the new maps don't have cold biomes. Also some of them don't have gold amalgam. It's pretty rough.

Its either an inconsistent water input, blocked oxygen output or power issue. Right now i guess its because i have 2 of these outputting to only 2 pipes for oxygen out. Hi! I love your guides so far, they've really helped me understand more of the mid-late game options where the game's built-in tutorials fall off. With all that said, I'm struggling to understand something about the full-Rodriguez design. With the half-Rodriguez, you're able to pull the full volume of gases generated by the electrolizers without causing a problem. So why doesn't anyone add a 7th pump in the bottom of the full-Rodriguez to get a full 3.5kg of o2 out? The only answer I can find on forums is that it makes keeping the pressures stable a more complex problem, but I'm having trouble seeing it.

Why does one of your designs (the one with the gas tank) with 2 electrolyzers work on 2 gas pumps (for oxygen) and the next design require 4?
@FrancisJohnYT
@FrancisJohnYT 5 жыл бұрын
Every design is a compromise. 2 gas pumps does not take full advantage of electrolyzers output but you get exactly 1kg/s of O2 in a four tile high package. 4 gas pumps does take full advantage of the electrolyzers but depending on your base you may need to load balance the 1.75kgs output. Yeah that's the nice thing about these designs. I currently need the power more than the oxygen, so the "4 tile high" build will work perfect. The O2 will be enough for my extra dupes, and I can use the H2 for power in a build that is already a net positive in power. Which also works because my gas gyser is about to go dormant. Makes for a good stepping stone for when I'll need a more O2 heavy build

I did some testing on Hydrogen/Oxygen volumes out of a Full Rodriguez vs an unfiltered setup consisting of mini-cells 6 wide by 2 high with an electrolyzer in the middle and pumps on either side. Image here: imgur.com/a/yal4FZd You can route the output of each pair of pumps through a filter of some sort, either powered or unpowered using gas bridges and gas valves using techniques I learned in Brothgar's video here kzbin.info/www/bejne/mKvapJqBlNeompI. The results running each setup for one cycle was that I got nearly identical quantities of Hydrogen and slightly less Oxygen using 3 electrolyzers and 6 pumps in a cell configuration as I did from a full Rodriguez. Full Rodriguez: 2160W, 13.97Kg H, 1639Kg O. 3 Cells: 1800W, 13.8Kg H, 1533Kg O. For my base's Oxygen needs, I am using a Full Rodriguez, but after these results, I'll be using 2-4 of my mini-cells in space for my rocketry program. Modular, easily expandable, and more efficient (for Hydrogen at least) than a Full Rodriguez.

Either the wiki and this tutorial are outdated or my game is bugged. My Electrolyzers are outputting air at pretty much exactly the input temperature of the water, which is 30 °C because I'm using po2 from slime biomes, cleaned trough the Water Sieve, which also doesn't heat/cool the water at all. Which is all super weird, I remember heat being such a big issue from playing during EA, so I a built a massive cooling system involving the anti entropy thermo-nullifier, which turns out to be complete overkill because instead of 70° hot air I get 30° warm air that my cooling setup cools to like -30 C° lol

Give it a bit of time, all of the equipment in the SPOM have default temp when they are build of 20C-40C it will take dozens of cycles for the hot O2 to heat it all up to temp. Give it about 100 cycle and you will be glad you setup the nullifier.

@@FrancisJohnYT That's the usual heat up over time from the machinery emitting heat, but I'm talking about stuff like the water sieve always outputting at 40° and the electrolyzer at 70°. For some reason, the temperature evens out with its surrounding extremely rapidly and, in a survival setting, it can seem like the output is not 70C at all. It is definitely not a fixed output temperature. It is input temp plus a little bit of heat generated by the electroyzer. Same way with the Water Sieve. One thing I found is that there are situations where you don't consume enough of the excess hydrogen. At the beginning that extra hydrogen can be your main power. But it eventually becomes a subnet that may see little use. I just had a situation where hydrogen started to appear in the oxygen line. Bad if you feed that line to atmo suit docks. Eventually the hydrogen should be put into the main power plant and the prioritized over natural gas. That way everything in the base can burn it off.
@TheMule71
@TheMule71 4 жыл бұрын
In my experience, that is far more common. You should never let hydrogen back up. With a couple of bridges and a well placed element sensor, you can detect when the pipe is backing up and if you plug the sensor to the automation of the local generators, you can have them burn the extra hydrogen. Oxygen backing up is rarely a problem, if you set the pressure sensors correctly. The electrolyzers go overpressure and the production stops. You can remove the generators and dump extra oxygen into space (or feed it to those-nasty-slicksters-nobody-likes for food) if all you want is the hydrogen (for example, rockets, they consume equal parts of O and H, so either you keep petroleum engines around, or you have way to much oxygen) and you have external power.

In a setup with 3 gas pumps and 2 electrolyzers (about 8:52), if each electrolyzer produces 888g/s of oxygen, and each gas pump only pumps 500g/s of oxygen, why doesn't it eventually overpressure, or pump oxygen into the hydrogen part of the room?
@FrancisJohnYT
@FrancisJohnYT 4 жыл бұрын
Only one element can occupy a tile at a time. So at the extreme end of that if you have a two tile room with 10000kg of water in one tile and 1kg of O2 in the other tile the water cannot just crush the O2. In the build you list the electrolyzers do over pressure and stop working as the O2 pumps cannot pull out the O2 fast enough. But the hydrogen pump gets stopped by the Atmo sensor before it can pull out so much hydrogen that the O2 could replace it.

I made the version with the gas tank, minus the doors in the interior because he said in the video that they don’t do anything except allow Dupes to get in and out (mine do not get trapped). The electrolyzers do not produce enough hydrogen, so the center gas pump pushes through an oxygen/hydrogen mix, damaging my hydrogen converter. So I have to add an air filter (taxing the power to over 1000 watts when it cuts on) to sort the hydrogen and oxygen, re-routing the oxygen back with the other two pumps. I even set the pressure gauges for 450, 450, and 750 like in the video. I’m out of algae, so had to whip this up or I would die. Still need to clear enough space/gather materials for my first attempt at a “Rodriguez,” but I’m already concerned that it might not work out given this trial.

So I built the one you show at 6:20, works perfectly! Although I'm finding one issue that I'm not sure if it's normal or not; pipes backing up. The oxygen I'm not too concerned about (I've got it distributing all along my base so if one vent is pressurised it'll move to the next, although even that's now backed up with more oxygen than I can use), but also I quickly found that not only did the hydrogen pipe back up, but also that the gas tank filled to full. Is this anything to be concerned about? I'm assuming not so much because it'll just run when there's space for it to run, right? Should I be setting up my smart battery to a specific setting? I've currently got it requesting at a pretty high number just to try and keep it constantly asking for more power to try and keep the hydrogen used. I do have a pump in the lower end of the map venting out CO2 to space so I'm hoping pressure will lower again but honestly I don't have a huge issue with a lack of oxygen as I only use 8 dups atm, I just wanted to switch to a SPOM now that I had comfortable water supply and before algae got dangerously low.

A game like "Oxygen Not Included" would have caused me so much headache without some guidance, so thank you for being there to clear things up when I needed it. Second, I was curious how would these designs react if water supply stopped for a while or the oxygen output pipes became over pressured? Early in the game I may use a single electrolyzer and that could potentially make more than enough oxygen to the point where my base would be over pressurized by it. Would this break the design or mess with how the built in filtering system works requiring me to flush the system again as if it were running for the first time (or do the atmo sensors prevent that)? Any clarification on this would be appreciated, Thank you!

Such a great vid, thanks a lot! I'm really wanting to step into electrolyzers as my algae is slowly depleting (tbf I could probably last another 100+ cycles or so on it), but I was reading so much about hot oxygen being an issue that I wasn't sure how to really approach it. Love the idea of running the water pipe through the oxygen first to help cool it, and also the ice biome idea. I've seen quite a few builds use an enclosed section of cool pwater to run the oxy through, but it confused me a little because wouldn't the water start to heat up from the hot oxy in the pipes and eventually not provide sufficient cooling? Or is that not an issue? I found a slush geyser recently, was going to use that to run through my hot water (I've been using a tepidizer to remove germs to give me a source of clean water to eventually pump into the electrolyzers), but maybe I could use the pwater from that somehow. I dunno. Oh, I also love how you show all the piping and wiring, and also say what your sensors are set at. It's amazing how few guides actually do that.

Material types are more about overheat temp. Copper, iron and aluminum overheat at 75C. The O2 and hydrogen come out at 70C, throw in the heat the machines give off and you can get to 75C and damage the machines. Gold gives an overheat bonus of +50C so your equipment won't overheat until 125C so it's much safer. Steel gives a +200C bonus which is why it is so valued.

Heat capacity is how much energy it needs to change temperature. Thermal conductivity is how well the thermal energy (heat or cold) will pass through it. Imagine a water tank, HC is how much it can hold and TC is how much said "water tank" flows. If you want to insulate your base, high capacity with low conductivity. If you want different temperatures to come in contact fast, you need high conductivity.

I like to build an extra electrolyzer, find it works better. theoretically one electrolyzer should be able to saturate 2 pumps so they're constantly pumping a full 5km unit of gas and not wasting power, so 2 electrolyzers should do 3 oxygen pumps at the bottom and a hydrogen pump at the top... however it's almost impossible to get the pumps to run 100% of the time just because of how gases more and merge so adding an extra electrolyzer allows them some downtime, they aren't using power while they're not working so it's not any less efficient and keeps everything nice and full of gas. 1 hydrogen pump, 4 oxygen pumps, and 3 electrolyzers seems like a good ratio for large-scale oxygen production. also having the electrolyzers up in the hydrogen layer will produce more hydrogen if I recall, due to how gases merge. you can usually just leave the bottom open if you build a vertical setup too, if it's set up right extra oxygen just flows out the bottom and you capture all the hydrogen. also for cooling if you have extra power you can put some thermo regulators up in the hydrogen layer and run the oxygen through them to dump the heat into the hydrogen then feed it into a generator to destroy it.
