What a silly question! What does a country have anything to do with it? It is an innate, evolutionary characteristic, which is deeply imbedded in our psyche & dna. A survival adaptation that we are all subject to, regardless of where you live. It is so primal that we share it with most animal species. Every species can quickly recognize their own as an essential requirement for survival! Similarly, they can also spot differences or "deviation from the pattern". A zebra that lost its stripes due to a health condition will likely be shunned by its herd. They don't shun it bc its different, but bc it stands out & increases risk of predator attack. An albino lion or wild dog may be shunned by its pride or pack, because it is easily spotted, which makes hunting a lot more challenging. Wolves will attack & kill wolves that are not from their pack. Lions will too. Ants are on a whole other level, where they wage literal war on their own kind. As we can see, characteristics that we may think are unique to humans are nothing of the kind. "Us vs. them" concept has been implemented by various organisms, long before Homo Sapiens ever walked the Earth.

one of the reasons Romania and Serbia are considered racist is that we don't stand useless political correctness. we call black people black people, because that's what they are, not because we consider them lesser beings. We don't use stuff like African-American and such. We call gay people gay because that's what they are, wtf IS non-binary and they/them and such stupid things? it's called bisexual and so on. we like to be direct and not mess around with words that can be easily interpreted just because we actually don't want to be misunderstood. Why should i call myself caucasian or eastern-european or whatever when i'm white? you get the idea, we are NOT racist (of course there are small exceptions everywhere), we are just sincere and direct! :)

Ahh yes not racist but you'll have wars and genocide those of the same genetic makeup as you(like Croats, Bosniaks, etc). The reason you are not racist and can be "nice" right now is because nobody is threatening your nation with replacement of your culture. If you had a million + Chinese(just as an example), most of your countrymen would become racist very quickly. When something doesn't affect us then we can easily be nice to others because it's free, doesn't cost anything (the nice Chinese person coming on vacation is very different from many of them living in your nation). When it does, everything changes and we become very evil sob's. The most racist countries today are those who have a ton of diversity today but were not diverse countries before(America, Canada, Britain, France).

Our Serbian folklore group shared a dance hall for practice at multicultural center with a Jamaican group so we befriended each other ! There were not many black people or Serbian people in our city back than as is the case now there are 10's of thousands of each !! One day my dear friend invited me to a Jamaican club(I love Rege music, like love it). Back then there was A LOT OF RACISM which I never understood until I learned the history of slavery and all. I went to the club with her, and I did notice that I was the only white ass in the place and I made the comment to her at which time she replied that I was the 1st white person to have walked in their club. To this day I'm still very proud of that if I may call it "privilege and honor" !!

I don't know how far back in history you want to go about religious wars, but the Serbian feudal lords fought a long series of wars against the Bosnian Bogomils between the 9th and 12th centuries with more or less success. The Balkan Wars between 1904 and 1912 were basically religious wars against the Ottoman Empire with the result of killing and ethnically cleansing Serbia, Bulgaria and Greece of most of their Muslims. The Bosnian and Kosovo civil war can be called a religious war because the other side was mostly Muslim, and Serbia was Orthodox, but some do not see the forest for the trees or want to forget the Serbian historical and religious reality.

@@markorsrpska7230 Why, don't forget we never retaliated upon the catholics for their involvement in the killing of Serbs by Croats during WW2. Catholic priests partook actively. Let's also not forget how most Turks actually up and left on their own, rather than getting cleansed. You omitted to mention that the Ottomans settled Albanian muslims in Kosovo, around Skadar and around Ohrid to terrorize the Serb civilians. Bogomils in Bosnia were Serbs. Besides, many princedoms from the Holy Roman Empire partook in the bloody 30 years' war, and nobody's calling modern-day Germans a people plagued by a past of religious wars, or as religious fanatics. There was no "long sequence" of wars against Bogomilism; it came, went and disappeared, while the most renowned rulers of Bosnia crowned themselves in monasteries that were property of the Serbian Orthodox Church. Hell we don't have records of a single skirmish, just exile; a pretty light punishment for the Middle Ages, where countries like England had proscribed for traitors, for instance, a gruesome death coined "Drawn, hanged and quartered". Protestants from the Alps to Sweden burned by the hundreds those they deemed to be witches in the 16th century, but nobody brings that up, or by fault shifts blame to the Inquisition (Which is to blame for plenty too). The break-up of Bosnia & Herzegovina was religious, because "Bosniaks" wanted to separate themselves from their ethnic and religious roots, and called for a cleansing of the land off Christians, Serbs and Croats chiefly among them. You can place the blame for that on their doorstep, and they got off pretty light, with massive support from USA and NATO. They still failed in their task, naturally. Have a good one.

@@markorsrpska7230 War against Ottoman was not religious, it was war to preserve culture under their influence. I am from Serbia, I live in Serbia. How can we be racists, I have seen a black person maybe 15 times in my life. I can't hate black people, because I don't know them. And when I see some of them, they are interesting. Especially their women, with their interesting hair. To hate some kind of people, somebody must TEACH you to hate. Or you should have some bad experiences. Or you should have some special inclination to it, based on experiences. In Serbia, we don't have that. We love all kinds of strangers, even from the countries that made us a lot of evil things, and they still do it. Like the UK, America, and France, we don't reject anyone. We will always be hospitable. My best friend ever was an American (he died).

People don't understand, we have enough of our problems to be racist on top of that. Thing is, you have to be a good person for people to like you. If you never talk or greet your neighbors, you will be suspicious and strange. People like to know who is living in their neighborhood.

back in the 60's and 70's we were a part of the non-aligned nations and so we had a looots of Africans coming to study in Yugoslavia, and in my town we had a entire dorm dedicated for medicine students from African countries. So you can imagine how people came to love eachother as equals back then, maybe on some ideological and political lines, but more as people who fought for their independence. All over the Serbia there is the feeling that we are on the same side of history fighting the western and other empires for our freedom so we have much in common, and even cultures are similar when it comes to values. So the skin color is nothing, but the spirit we share is everything. Glad you are loving Serbia! I have some african american friends here in Serbia and they are all saying the same thing.

Staring in Serbia isn't about racism or hating... it's about curiosity :o not many foreign people here and Serbs are very hospitable and friendly. I remember stories from WW1 when European soldiers would usually refrain from interacting with soldiers from colonies but Serbs would invite them to their Slava (Each family in Serbia has designated patron saint which has it's own specific calendar date) to celebrate xD I remember a story of a football player who got stranded in Serbia because he got scammed by Italian football club or something xD Serbs helped him out and he even got a place to stay and eventually citizenship, I think... He decided to chose which Slava he will celebrate on his own xD

Most people in Serbia have never seen a black person with their own eyes, live. So, when it does happen, they do stare at you, but that is out of curiosity. After a while, that stops. In my hometown, there is a black girl that married a Serbian guy. At first, people were staring at her, it was unusual. Now, everybody treats her as if she was born here and they've known her for entire life. We just don't care about skin color. And most people in Eastern Europe are famous for hospitality.

All Anglo-Saxon (American/UK) definition of racism becomes pointless in Serbia, and in Balkans in general. We don't have or use slur names, they don't mean anything. Never had slaves of any kind, have no history about subduing others for at least a millennia, have history of fighting against Apartheid and Uni-schooling for free lots of Africans and middle-eastern pupils. There's dozens of boulevards, streets and objects just about African culture (and yes there is also an African museum), but not just Africans, pretty much about every race and culture. The worst racist predators in Serbia are kids that want to take selfie with you!

I remember during the 80s, we had many black students from Africa as a part of student exchange programs between Serbia (then Yugoslavia) and African countries. I was just a little kid back then, and my parents used to send me to the store nearby for some groceries. There, I would often run across black students buying stuff, and while waiting at the register they'd always communicate with me. I couldn't speak English at that time, so we understood each other on a more basic level. They've always been very warm and polite, and I could really feel good intentions from their side. Serbians judge people not by the color of their skin of something silly as that, but whether a person has good intentions and set of moral values. During my childhood, I've never heard from anyone around me a racist comment or anything similar concerning black people, quite the opposite. They were just people, like anyone else, nothing more, nothing less. On the other side, if you come from the outside and you want to spread you political agenda, influence society in a bad way, undermine family values... Then you better take good care of yourself, because Serbians are very wary people.

Constitution of Serbia from the 19th century. Also during the First World War, the English and the French brought soldiers from the colonial countries and because they were black they put them in a barn to sleep, a Serbian soldier saw this and rebelled and then other Serbian soldiers, they almost beat those officers, and those colonial soldiers slept together with the Serbian soldiers in the dormitory. Greetings from Serbia. Let me explain. Of course there are individuals who are sick, including racists, but those are individuals, in general we have people of all colors, nationalities, religions and traditions in Serbia forever. We have our black people, gypsies, who have been with us forever. We don't call them that, we call them Serbs, because they live here, give birth to children, go to school and so on, they have the same rights as us. People from Africa have always been coming to us, when they were slaves in Europe, they were free people in Serbia. It is the first article of our Constitution since liberation from the Turks in 1835, when we were slaves in our country. Every man who is a slave and who sets foot on the soil of Serbia is a free man, it is written in our Constitution, and it is so even today. In the First World War, Serbia formed the first Black Guard from people who stayed with us from the French army, for example. We have the largest Museum of African Art and Culture in Europe in Belgrade, the first Buddhist temple in Europe was built here, all religions are present today and are treated equally, in the capital there are all their religious objects, but also throughout the country. We have a large number of students from Africa and today, we have a lot of international marriages and children from those marriages. I repeat, there are crazy people in every country, even in our country, who will make negative comments, but in general we like it when people come to visit us or stay. You are welcome to Serbia.

I would need to point that this question is asked from the wrong perspective. My husband was American, and we moved to the small town in Serbia. Few years ago, when our son was in the preschool, his class went for a picnic. During a play, my son's classmates took him to the bushes and kept him as a war prisoner and later took him for a staged execution - because he was American. Teachers sow this as a random kids play, there was no interference. Later in the elementary school other children kept calling my son a murderer - because he is American - again, no interference. Black Americans are seen here as allies, while white Americans / Europeans are perceived as aggressors, oppressors and implementers of neocolonial agenda.
@ranojutro426 Жыл бұрын
That is true. Here in Canada where I am working with 80% black people. They call me you white people, like we are some garbage and you can not say anything they accused you that you are racist.
