@@denickisandelsWe called them Long John Silvers (treasure chest with gold inside) but in general vanilla custard inside a rounded off rectangle pastry topped with chocolate is called an Eclair. Those and cream puffs are my Dad’s favorite. My Mom likes cruellers and devils food cake donuts. Among my favs are apple fritter, blueberry muffin or strawberries and cream donuts. Everyone loves plain or chocolate glazed yeast donuts from Krispy Kreme and cinnamon rolls from just about anywhere, which are my Hubs favorites. it’s ah-mazing what can be done with sweetened dough and flavors.

I had an internet friend visit me from England several years ago, and he was really impressed with the friendliness of the service in the US. When he was making his way to the west coast, his flight was grounded because of a storm. He called to say he would be arriving the next day, then he told me that the airline's service had been brilliant. They paid for all the passengers to stay overnight at a nearby hotel and arranged the transportation there and back. The whole time, they were apologizing for the inconvenience. My friend said that the storm wasn't the airline's fault, but it still took complete responsibility for the passengers. He was equally astonished the first time we went to the grocery store. The employees all greeted him happily with things like, "Oh, you're her friend from England! How do you like it here so far? Where have you gone? What do you think of the food here?" They had been waiting for him! He couldn't believe that he was being treated like a celebrity or a long-lost family member during his first trip to a grocery store. He got the same treatment every time we went to the store during his three weeks here. He said that grocery shopping was going to be really disappointing when he got home.

The rectangular doughnut with the chocolate icing and Bavarian Creme fulling is called a "Long John" and is the American Donut version of a Chocolate Eclair. If you like Eclairs or Cream Puffs (Pate Choux Dough) head one state east to New Orleans Louisianna and sample some "Beignets" or "French Doughnuts"

The apple fritter is my normal go to at any donut shop I visit. The Halloween specials looked like iced sugar cookies, or it could have been pan dulce, a sort of Mexican sweet bread, I really couldn't tell. Either way it all looked delicious!

The orange thing you tried last looked like a frosted sugar cookie, not a donut. And I'm shocked if you guys have never had a sugar cookie before. Sugar cookies were one of the most common homemade cookies of my American childhood. Every holiday and birthday party I attended as a child had at least one plate of sugar cookies (usually sent in by someone's mom but sometimes one of the party activities was having the kids decorate the cookies with frosting and sprinkles). I'm gobsmacked to discover sugar cookies are not a thing in the UK! 😲

I included you with a Beesleys reaction. Here is what I said: I have 4 channels I watch regularly, Beesleys, Mr H and friends, Your New Zealand Family and SleeperDude. SleeperDude has 3 kids and are probability the most well rounded for the kids (because of where they live). They just got back from a 3 wk, 7000 mile vacation across to some of the most amazing places in the south and west. You feel like your in the car with them (amazing).

Mr H the chocolate doughnut with the dense looking crumb is a cake type doughnut, which are usually a smaller diameter but are a more rounder ring. The doughnuts that have a more bread-like inside are yeast type doughnuts which are usually a more flatter ring and the filled no-hole ones are usually this type.

My only cure for untasty cold donuts is rich, hot coffee. Together, they're wonderful. There are good cold or day-olds - fritters often quality, but God invented '15 seconds' on the microwave just to solve the Cold Donut Dilemma. Or maybe it was "21" or something like that. Praise the Lord!! And pass the great coffee...

I used to drive 10 miles north to pick up a dozen plain glazed and a dozen chocolate glazed to take to work. I’d feel the warm bottom of the box as they handled it to me. Invariably one didn’t make it to work. I learned to get those and a separate bag with one of each for myself and no one knew. I like their large sausage kolaches (klobasneks) too. They are my favorite donuts.

I'know exactly where the round rock is found in the creek! I used to live in Leander, TX. so it was a short hop & skip away. I spent many years in Round Rock, because I was Dell employee.

There are a lot of good places to eat around you then. And some cool live perf9rmanxe spots, if you're willing to fight the Austin traffic. The drive to San Antonio isn't too long either, and you will find even more good food (try the puffy tacos), museums, and historical sites (the Spanish missions aren't as famous as the Alamo, but worth a visit).

I've lived in Round Rock since 1982 and those donuts were around way back then. They've never changed the recipe or how they're made. Fun trivia: the huge head-sized donuts are actually cut with a 5-gallon bucket. Also, RR donuts are the only yellow donuts I've ever seen. RR donuts is (hands down) the top. Krispy Kreme, dunkin', an other donut place out there will never dethrone the mighty RR donuts!

I enjoyed them especially when they’re fresh. I got some glaze and chocolate ice donuts, Cinnamon rolls. Glaze Donuts hole, 2 Eclair, and two large kolaches the jalapeño and cheese and dr. Pepper. For the trip back home.

If you ever come across a Hurts Donut somewhere… definitely check it out. They have 70 donut flavors in constant rotation, but my favorite is the maple bacon long John, which they use real chopped bacon for. Another go to is the chocolate salted caramel yeast raised. They have a red velvet cake donut sometimes too. And if it strikes your fancy, get one of their oversized coffee mugs. They have the logo on them but what sets them apart are the handles… they’re shaped like brass knuckles 😁

When Bart and I were able to eat donuts... we went to Krispy Kream... We used to say .... "and lead me not into temptation... I can find Krispy Kream all by myself!!" We can't eat them anymore because of our health issues.... but those donuts you had looked really, really good!! From the description, it sounds like the UK standard might be what we’d call a cake donut. Denser, heavier, more like, well, cake. US standard is “raised” donuts. I don’t know if they use that terminology over there, but might be worth at least an internet search to see if anyone there shows them (and get, might even get a comparison video out of it if there’s someone close)

I'd pick the cinnamon roll as a favorite, but scrape off most of the icing first. 😄 It's funny, I love sweetness, but frostings and icing are usually too sweet for me. Apple fritters are the nom! Yep, they have cinnamon. I think those were iced sugar cookies at the last, too. So good. They made 'em big (the proper way 😆) and slightly undercooked, so they stay nice and soft. Seriously, doesn't *anyone* make soft cookies in the UK? I'm gobsmacked, like a previous commenter. I knew crisp or at least shortbread-y were the most common, but none at all?!!! You need both worlds. Crisp cookies and soft, chewy, melt-in-your-mouth cookies. At least in half of our cookie recipes, if they're hard, they've gone stale. That's why you put a slice of store bread in with them if they start getting a bit hard, and you know you can't finish them off that day. Keeps 'em soft for a bit.

They were subbed on a grocery order once, and I enjoyed them, but they were a tad too sweet with the icing. But the cookies themselves were great. I just got two boxes of the store brand's plain sugar cookies and froze them, because they often run out. 😄 I love those! Almost as soft as the Lofthouse.

I go there pretty often glad you’re in the Round Rock / Austin Area . There will be a lot of people suggesting places that are popular like Franklin Barbecue I’d like to say please give Interstellar Barbeque in North Austin and try the peach tea glazed pork belly . Get there early if you do because they sell out. Also Kalahari indoor water park in Round Rock is the biggest indoor water park in the country they have a baby area for the little one and Salt Lick Barbeque the most iconic Austin Area Barbeque is rite across the street from Kalahari beef ribs are a must . Cheers .
